Chapter 441
"Va-Va-Van?!"
"....."
The female Abberant glanced down at the human hanging from her claws.
For a moment, her golden eyes remained fixed on him.
Then she looked back at Ray.
She tilted her head before glancing toward their mothership.
"Oh! So you did indeed know him? Hmph."
Ray’s hands instinctively folded into fists.
His eyes remained fixed on the sight of his best friend in such a condition.
His head spun with fury.
The red blood flowing from Van’s head, face, and battered body made something inside him burn.
It angered him to no heights.
Kai landed behind Ray with a deep frown etched across his face.
Since the main battle had been paused, everyone had heard what the Abberant said.
"Infiltrated the mothership?" Kai uttered, a hint of disbelief lacing his voice as he stared toward Van.
Now, it all made sense.
The rain of laser beams from the mothership.
The strange absence of bombardment earlier.
Honestly, the others hadn’t had the leisure to check what was happening or question why there had been no barrage.
They had been too busy fighting for their lives.
But now that they knew what Van had done, everything suddenly fell into place.
Ray’s heart raced with fury.
The longer he stared at his friend, the more the anger inside him grew.
But beneath that anger was something else.
Self-blame.
It crashed into him like a wave.
He blamed himself.
Despite being capable of sensing the entire battlefield with his incredible perception, he hadn’t sensed when his friend had ventured deep into enemy territory alone.
Ray had been so consumed by the prospect of gaining more experience points that he had neglected his best friend in the process.
How could he have been so reckless?
And now, Van was in this position because of his negligence.
Only he was to blame.
"...."
No.
...It wasn’t just him.
Ray snapped his head upward.
His eyes locked onto the female Abberant.
He glared daggers at her.
His nails began elongating without him even giving them any thought.
The sharpened nails pierced into his palms as his fingers curled tighter.
Blood slowly trickled between them.
Killing intent erupted from his body.
It was so intense that even Lincoln nearly shivered as he turned toward the boy.
But that wasn’t all.
Inside his mindspace, Ray could feel another killing intent building.
One that definitely didn’t come from him.
Tak.
Tak.
Tak.
Bruce stopped directly behind the chair.
His teeth ground against each other as fury burned in his eyes.
"How could she do that?!"
Elyon lifted a brow.
The Celestial was taken aback by the sudden concern coming from the Werewolf.
"Huh? Since when do you care?"
Bruce shot an icy look in the Celestial’s direction.
"Since the day I realized that our ticket home lies in his hands. If anything bad happens to Van, do you think we’ll be able to return to our world?"
Elyon raised a brow.
He still didn’t understand what the Werewolf was getting at.
"I’m lost."
"...."
Bruce turned fully toward the Celestial and sighed.
"That boy’s brain is unlike anything a human is capable of. He could figure out a way for us to get to our respective realms and, in the process, probably regain our memories."
He paused.
"And the second..."
Bruce turned his head slightly.
His gaze shifted toward Ray.
The boy was gripping the armrest of his chair so tightly that his knuckles had begun turning pale.
Boiling anger filled his eyes.
Bruce sighed.
"...If he dies, Ray will definitely abandon the possibility of going to our realm to help us in pursuit of revenge."
His expression hardened.
"He already hates the Abberants for taking his mum and sister from him."
Bruce looked back toward Elyon.
"What do you think will happen when his childhood best friend loses his life?"
Elyon silently gulped.
The killing intent flooding the mindspace was becoming heavier by the second.
The Celestial slowly wiped his pristine, beautiful face.
"Is-Is-Is he dead?"
Bruce touched Ray’s shoulder, allowing him to share the vision with the outside world.
"No. I can hear his heartbeat, but only faintly. He needs medical attention, lest he lose his life at any moment."
∆∆∆∆∆
".... Well, he is useless."
The Abberant looked down at the battered human in her grasp.
"I had thought that he was strong since he was able to infiltrate the mothership. But it turns out he is just..."
Her voice trailed off in disdain.
Then she tossed Van away as if he were nothing more than a ragdoll.
BANG!
Before his body could hit the ground, something blurred forward.
Ray.
He skidded to a halt, catching his friend before his battered body could strike the earth.
"What do you want with us? Why the whole attack?!" Lincoln furiously demanded, his hands clenched into fists.
But Ray barely heard him.
His mind was somewhere else.
’I need to stall. Mina should be reporting her findings back to the Captains. If one of them can return in time, we could have a chance at this.’
His eyes flickered toward the Five-Spined Abberant.
’And since she’s here right now, the other Abberants aren’t attacking.’
That was good.
They needed every second they could get.
"Van? Van? Are you okay?"
Ray frantically tapped his friend’s cheek.
His voice trembled.
Tears began welling in his eyes.
Van’s body remained limp in his arms.
"Do-don’t say anything, okay? I-I will heal you. Don’t worry."
[Celestial Healing Activated]
A bright white glow erupted from Ray’s hands.
It spread from Van’s cheek across the rest of his battered body.
Under the astonishing healing energy, torn flesh began mending.
Cuts closed.
Damaged skin restored itself.
The pale color draining Van’s face slowly began to recede as the radiant glow spread through his body.
The sight caught the Abberant’s attention.
Her golden eyes shifted toward Ray.
Unlike the other humans standing before her, frozen in fear by her presence, this particular human was ignoring her completely.
As if she didn’t exist.
Silver was hurt.
Her pride was.
As a Five-Spined Abberant, she commanded fear and awe.
Not only among her own race, but among humans as well.
Yet this kid...
Ignored her?
Her golden eyes narrowed.
She turned toward Lincoln and pointed a finger in Ray’s direction.
"What do I want?"
She tilted her head upward, looking toward the drones hovering around the battlefield.
"I want to eliminate all humans, just like we have been wanting to."
BOOOM!
The ground beneath her feet exploded.
She launched toward Ray with terrifying speed.
So fast that both Lincoln and the drones struggled to keep up with her movement.
One moment she was standing several metres away.
The next—
She materialized directly before Ray.
Her tail rose behind her.
Then it lashed toward the boy like a streak of lightning.
Ray didn’t move.
Not even an inch.
His entire attention remained fixed on his best friend.
Tears rolled down his cheeks as he desperately hoped Van would wake up.
The tail descended.
"RAY! MOVE!"
Trisha’s voice rang across the battlefield.
She landed on top of a building, panic flashing across her normally cold expression.
Van’s eyes suddenly snapped open.
His vision was blurry.
But he could see it.
The tail.
Only inches away from cleaving Ray’s head apart.
"Ra—!"
WAM!
A cloud of dust erupted instantly.
A shockwave of terrifying intensity blasted outward, knocking two of the Corps’ drones out of the air.
