Chapter 461
Raze’s gaze hardened.
"You abominable creature, you are under arrest."
"....."
The whole street fell silent.
At the same time, the eyes of every Aspirant fell on the weapons being pointed directly at the Tribrid.
The excitement that had filled the battlefield only moments ago had completely vanished.
Meanwhile, the person being surrounded could be seen changing form.
His monstrous body slowly shifted and reshaped itself back into that of a human.
The thick fur disappeared from his body.
His claws retracted.
His frame shrank.
Within seconds, the werewolf was gone.
Ray stood in the middle of the street once more.
His torn clothes barely hung over his body, with several pieces doing little more than covering what they could.
The cold wind brushed against his exposed skin as his grey eyes slowly scanned the various weapons pointed at him.
Not a single one of them was lowered.
The viewers watching the livestream remained silent as they watched what was about to happen.
Nobody knew what would happen next.
Then, almost as if they had planned it together, all of Ray’s friends jumped down from the rooftops simultaneously.
Felix burst out of the building he had been smashed into earlier, his regenerated arm now completely restored.
One after another, they landed around Ray, surrounding the men who were surrounding their friend.
Their expressions were sharp.
Their eyes were filled with hostility.
They had just fought alongside Ray against a Five-Spined Abberant.
And now, they were being forced to watch the Vanguard Order treat him like an enemy.
"What is the meaning of this? Let Ray go now!" Van demanded with a low growl, glaring at the men holding his friend at weapon point.
Raze tilted his head slightly as he looked at the kids.
Trisha.
Kai.
Van.
Chloe.
Felix.
Even Caster.
They were all there, standing between Ray and the Vanguard Order while shooting cold glares at the soldiers.
Raze scanned them for a second or two.
Then, he turned back around to look at Ray.
His obsidian eyes narrowed slightly as he examined the boy from head to toe.
"Oh? I know you now."
Ray gulped silently.
His heart raced as he recalled his first meeting with the Captain and the introduction Kai had given of him.
The man’s reputation alone was enough to make Ray cautious.
That was why he had rushed to take the chair before Bruce could do something reckless that would get him killed.
Raze’s gaze moved between Ray and the others.
"You were the cohort who were trapped in a Tier One Gate a few months ago. The Gate world that had an Abberant crash-land."
There was a hint of surprise in his voice as he stared at the kids one by one.
The members of the cohort shifted slightly beneath his gaze, clearly uncomfortable with the attention.
Raze remained silent for another moment.
Then, without saying anything else, he took a step backward and pulled his weapon away.
For a second, Ray’s eyes lit up with hope.
*Maybe...*
"Cuff him."
The small spark in Ray’s eyes immediately disappeared.
The eyes of his entire cohort widened in horror.
"No, no, no! You can’t do that! Ray did absolutely nothing to deserve this!" Van shouted back.
His hand hovered a moment away from his chest, ready to summon his mechanical spiders.
If it came down to it, he would fight his way through every one of these men to get Ray safely away from them.
Tak.
Tak.
Clack.
The sound of weapons being adjusted echoed through the street.
"It isn’t till something is a threat before we take it out," Jack commented as he stood beside Raze, giving Ray a thorough look.
His gaze remained cold.
"If we had known on time that the Abberants would be an issue, we would have sought them all out and taken care of them. And now..."
Jack paused.
His eyes shifted toward the drones hovering above and panning across the entire street.
"Now, there’s a mythical race we have only heard of in stories standing before us. And based on what I know, he is incredibly dangerous."
"He is a human! Not a monster, so stop speaking as if he is one!" Chloe barked angrily.
Her voice echoed through the street.
Jack’s eyes shifted toward her.
"Human? Can you do what he did today? Can you transform into what he did today? Can you go toe to toe with a Five-Spined Abberant?!"
Before the others could respond, another voice suddenly shouted from across the rooftop.
"Exactly!"
Every eye turned toward the source.
Berg stood there, glaring down at the cohort.
Ray didn’t even need to turn around to figure out who had spoken.
His expression remained calm.
He kept his composure despite the weapons surrounding him and the hostility directed his way.
Raze frowned at the teenagers standing before him.
"And for your information, I’m not answerable to any one of you kids."
His grip tightened around his weapon.
"So step aside and let us do our job. Otherwise, you will all be arrested alongside him."
He paused for a moment before adding,
"....I should even arrest you all too. Who knows? You could be the same as him."
Raze’s eyes shifted, and several Militants began closing in on the cohort.
Then—
"Test me and drop that foot closer to them, and you all won’t have feet anymore. Touch them, and you all won’t have hands anymore. Look at them, and I will gouge your eyes out and feed them to you."
Ray’s voice was low, but the boiling anger beneath it was unmistakable.
Slowly lifting his head, he stared directly at Raze.
His head tilted slightly to the side.
A murderous killing intent suddenly erupted from his body, washing over the Militants who had been preparing to approach his friends.
The men immediately halted.
Loud gulps could be heard.
Even though Ray was exhausted, even though his body had barely recovered from his transformation, the sheer intensity in his eyes made it clear that he wasn’t bluffing.
"I’m not going to fight or resist. Want to arrest me?"
Ray slowly lifted both hands forward.
"... Do it. But don’t touch my friends. They have no part in all this. They shouldn’t be harmed in any way."
His voice softened.
"Please."
"RAY! What are you d—"
Ray suddenly snapped his gaze towards Van.
His eyes hardened as he glared at him and the rest of his friends.
Then, with a small shake of his head, Ray looked towards Kai.
Their eyes met.
Ray closed his eyes for a second before giving him a subtle nod.
Kai understood immediately.
The legacy grabbed Van by the shoulders and whispered into his ear.
"Listen. Captain Raze and Jack Kyre have the strength to execute Ray right here, right now, in front of everyone watching."
Van’s eyes widened slightly.
"But they didn’t. Why do you think that is?"
Van paused.
His gaze shifted towards Jack.
The Captain remained completely calm as he signalled for the Militants to cuff Ray.
The soldiers slowly approached.
Even after Ray had surrendered, there was hesitation in their movements.
They remembered the creature they had watched fighting the Five-Spined Abberant.
They had seen those claws.
Those fangs.
That monstrous strength.
And now, they had just heard the threat that came from the boy himself.
But eventually, they steeled themselves.
Two Militants grabbed Ray’s arms and carefully pulled them behind his back.
Click.
The first cuff locked around his wrist.
Click.
The second followed.
Ray didn’t resist.
He simply stood there.
Berg, meanwhile, was grinning from ear to ear.
A profound joy unlike anything he had ever experienced flooded his entire being, threatening to burst out of him if he wasn’t careful.
Chloe gripped her bow tightly.
Her teeth were clenched as she watched the Militants lock the cuffs around Ray’s wrists.
Her eyes began to glisten.
One tear rolled down her cheek.
Then another.
And another.
Screech!
A hover car came to a halt behind Raze.
The Militants stepped aside before beginning to nudge the Tribrid forward.
"Wa—"
Van was about to take a step forward when Kai immediately pulled him back.
"Don’t make this worse for him."
"But they’re taking him away!"
Van’s voice cracked with anger.
"My best friend is fucking being arrested!"
His fists trembled as he watched Ray slowly walk towards the hover car.
The vehicle looked almost like the police cars of the past, except for the advanced technology integrated into its design.
Trisha’s normally cold eyes flashed with an emotion she rarely allowed herself to show.
Sadness.
She silently watched Ray approach the vehicle.
Felix’s hands were tightly clenched, his muscles bulging beneath his skin as his teeth ground against each other.
’Sh-Should I try?’
His eyes flickered between Ray and the Militants.
But he knew.
If he acted now, he might only make things worse.
The car door opened.
Ray was pushed inside.
The Militants immediately stepped back before the door began closing.
Ray lifted his head.
Through the narrowing gap, he stared at his friends.
Van and Chloe were crying.
Kai, Trisha, and Felix stood there with clenched fists and pained expressions.
Caster, however, didn’t display a hint of emotion.
His eyes remained fixed on one person.
His father.
Jack Kyre.
Ray’s gaze lingered on his friends for another moment.
Then, just before the door completely closed, Ray flashed them all a small smile.
A reassuring smile.
As if silently telling them that everything would be fine.
Then—
Click.
The door closed.
Darkness swallowed his vision.
