The Eidolons tasked with moving and protecting the siege weapon roared angrily as the group of humans descended directly into their midst.
Several of them immediately raised their weapons and charged towards the unexpected intruders, while others turned towards the enormous siege weapon behind them, clearly unwilling to allow the humans anywhere near it.
Daisy smirked helplessly. "Well... here goes nothing." She reached towards her waist and pulled free a long, thin chain, its metal links sliding through her fingers before she attached a dagger to the end. She barely had time to finish before the nearest Eidolon lunged towards her, its claws reaching for her body.
Daisy’s body suddenly rose higher, causing the creature’s claws to pass harmlessly beneath her feet. She swung the chain downward at the same time, wrapping the dagger around the Eidolon’s neck before violently pulling.
The creature’s enormous body was dragged off the ground, its feet kicking helplessly as Daisy used the sudden momentum to swing herself around it.
The Eidolon crashed into several of its fellow creatures before finally coming to a stop. Daisy immediately pulled the chain back towards herself and landed lightly, only for another Eidolon to rush towards her from the side.
She ducked beneath its swinging weapon, wrapped the chain around its arm and pulled herself towards it, driving her dagger into its side before releasing the chain and shooting away from the collapsing body.
Andrea unsheathed her blade. Her body was petite and graceful, but when she moved, every Eidolon in her path was thrown away by the raw power she could mobilise. Her blade cut through several creatures with each series of movements, and soon blood stained the snow around her. She continued advancing, but the sheer number of Eidolons surrounding them made it obvious that they couldn’t remain in the same position for long.
They were at the back of the Eidolon formation, and more were coming to stop them from accomplishing their mission. Andrea raised her head and looked towards Daisy. "Daisy, go for the siege weapon. Yuri will be right behind you."
Daisy flung another Eidolon away before shooting towards the enormous weapon. She barely made it several meters before another creature intercepted her, forcing her to twist sideways as its claws swept past her.
Daisy wrapped her chain around its wrist and pulled herself around its body, using the creature’s own momentum to swing behind it before driving her dagger into the back of its neck.
Andrea hastily raised her blade as the spiked club of an Eidolon came crashing towards her. Her blade cut through the club and continued into the creature’s stomach, splitting its body open before it could recover. As she turned, another Eidolon was already on top of her, but a flash of lightning flashed past her shoulder and the creature was cut in half before it could attack.
"They’re too many, I can’t get past them all."
Yuri was covered in the blood of Eidolons and breathing heavily. Her grip around her katana remained firm, but the wounds she had suffered earlier were clearly slowing her down. Andrea nodded and turned towards Camila in the distance.
"Create an opening for Yuri."
Camila immediately raised her hands. At that moment, all the spiked clubs held by the surrounding Eidolons began shaking violently in their hands before being ripped away by an unseen magnetic force.
Hundreds of weapons were suddenly dragged through the air towards Camila, gathering together above her head until they formed a massive ball of spiked clubs.
The sheer weight of the weapons was difficult for her to bear. Camila’s arms trembled as she struggled to keep the enormous mass suspended, her cheeks puffing out as she concentrated. Then she gritted her teeth and threw both hands forward.
The giant ball of spiked clubs crashed through the Eidolons with tremendous force, crushing several beneath its weight while sending others flying in different directions. It tore open a clear path through the enemy formation, and without hesitation, Yuri followed directly behind it as Camila continued pushing the massive collection of weapons forward with her Dormant Ability.
Andrea breathed a sigh of hot air as she watched Yuri disappear through the opening. She had known Camila would be useful, but she had truly underestimated what the young woman could do.
Malik was actually behind Camila, holding tightly onto her waist with everything he had as she continued pushing the massive ball of spiked clubs forward. Camila’s brows slowly wrinkled in annoyance before she grabbed his hands and pulled them away from her waist.
"What the hell are you doing?".
Malik immediately wrapped his arms around her again, his expression completely serious despite the awkward position.
"My ability needs time to activate. I’m helpless until it does."
"Huh?"
Camila was visibly shocked by the revelation. She turned her head slightly, staring at him as if she couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Before she could question him further, Andrea suddenly moved past them and crashed through several Eidolons, her blade sending the creatures tumbling through the snow.
She briefly looked back at Camila.
"Protect him for as long as he needs. His ability is our ace."
Camila looked down at Malik, who was still holding onto her waist.
Then she sighed helplessly.
"Fine."
She turned her attention back towards the Eidolons and continued pushing the mass of weapons forward.
Daisy suddenly yelped as an Eidolon managed to grab hold of her feet. She looked down in disbelief before her expression twisted into anger.
"Get off me!".
She swung her weapon with both hands, the chain following the movement and creating a beautiful circular curve through the air before the dagger struck the Eidolon’s head. The blade cut straight through its skull, forcing the creature to release her as its body collapsed into the snow.
Daisy didn’t waste another second. She continued moving towards the siege weapon, weaving between the Eidolons that tried to intercept her until she finally reached it. She landed on top of the massive structure and immediately sighed in relief, her chest rising and falling as she looked back at the battlefield below.
Her approach had looked easier than it actually was. A single mistake would have been enough for the hundreds of Eidolons surrounding the weapon to tear her apart before she ever reached it.
Daisy turned her attention towards the weapon beneath her feet.
It wasn’t simply a large weapon.
The lower base supporting the weapon was enormous and rectangular, constructed from a material that remained almost completely intact despite the countless years it had apparently spent inside the ruins of humanity.
The structure gradually narrowed as it rose, its upper section forming a partial triangular shape before connecting to the enormous barrel mounted at the very top. The barrel was currently angled towards the frozen ground, pointing directly towards the battlefield where the humans and Eidolons were still fighting.
Daisy stared at it for several seconds.
The endless runes covering nearly every part of the weapon continued glowing faintly, countless symbols carved into its surface and connected to one another like an enormous network. Energy moved through them constantly, flowing deeper into the weapon before disappearing somewhere inside its massive frame.
It was an engineering masterpiece left behind by the ancient humans.
The siege weapon drew enormous quantities of energy through the endless runes covering its structure. That energy was condensed within its core before being released through the massive barrel in a concentrated beam.
The Awakened had simply given the power behind it a name they could understand.
A laser beam.
Daisy slowly looked towards the enormous barrel.
"So... how the hell do we use this thing?".
A roar suddenly snapped Daisy out of her reverie. She looked around and finally remembered that she was still surrounded by dozens of Eidolons. They were already climbing onto the siege weapon, clawing their way up its massive structure as they tried to reach her.
Daisy frowned in frustration and retrieved her weapon, tightening her grip around the chain as another Eidolon pulled itself over the edge.
"Seriously?"
She raised her dagger, preparing to cut through the first creature before the others could reach her. But before she could even strike, a giant ball of spiked clubs came rolling across the battlefield.
Daisy’s eyes widened.
The enormous mass of weapons crashed into the Eidolons surrounding the siege weapon before slamming directly into its lower structure. The impact sent several creatures tumbling away while the ball finally came to a stop against the weapon.
Daisy blinked at the destruction below her.
"What da?"
A flash of lightning suddenly passed across the battlefield.
Yuri landed beside her, her katana still covered in blood as she immediately turned towards the remaining Eidolons climbing the weapon.
"Stop daydreaming, we are on our own up here".
Daisy stared at her for a moment before looking back towards the battlefield.
"That reminds me, how do we plan on getting out of here after the mission is complete?".
