"First, I need a private residence in the Dragon Meteor Sect. I would like this to be done immediately for me and my two disciples outside. Those unpolished gems have lots of training to do." Karn listed his first request as he briefly glanced at the door. Karn needed a place to call home for the moment and a courtyard in the Dragon Meteor Sect would be perfect for him considering the added protection and to assist Xiao Cheng.

Karn had tried, but his God’s Eye could not bypass the carriage subspace for some odd reason. In fact, it could see outside but the outside was an endless void for Karn.

"We will see to that as soon as we return to the sect." Li Xiang accepted.

Karn nodded and then held up two fingers.

"The sect’s libraries, martial archives, and tea gardens shall remain open to me for three months." Karn listed his second condition.

"We can make sure to accommodate for that." Li Xiang spoke after glancing at Xiao Cheng.

Karn stroked his beard in satisfaction.

"Third, even if I join your sect, I do not want to be held down by responsibilities. No elder, disciple, or young master shall interfere with my actions unless they directly endanger the Dragon Meteor Sect."

"This might be a little difficult to complete before the end of the succession war. Once young master becomes the sect head this condition can be satisfied. Until then we can lower your responsibilities as much as possible." Li Xiang said deep in thought.

Karn flashed a bit of frustration intentionally. Internally he was quite pleased.

"Mhm, barely passable." Karn replied.

Xiao Cheng watched the discussion with intense focus as well. His intuition told him that getting this old man on his side was crucial in achieving his dreams.

"And my last condition is quite simple." Karn stroked his beard.

"Please ask Senior." Li Xiang nodded.

"This old man will not kneel."

Li Xiang’s brows furrowed slightly.

"I have wandered for too many years to become another man’s sword. I will aid you. I will teach your people. I will fight your enemies." Karn continued calmly.

Karn smiled.

"But the moment you believe this old body has become your servant... I will walk away."

Xiao Cheng remained silent.

"And should you ever become the monster you claim to despise then this old man will personally stop you."

Those final words left the men in the carriage stunned.

"Can you accept an old man such as me, young master?"

In response Xiao Cheng smiled.

"Senior misunderstands. I have no need for another subordinate."

He looked directly at Karn.

"My offer today is an offer of friendship not obedience."

Xiao Cheng placed a hand over his chest.

"If I wished for obedience, I could recruit another hundred disciples tomorrow."

"What I seek is someone who can give me strength when I am weak and help me on my path towards my dream even if that means disobeying me."

Li Xiang lowered his head with a faint smile.

"So long as Senior does not abandon the innocent people we seek to protect I will never command you. I swear upon my name" Xiao Cheng continued.

"Koko! Good brat!" Karn burst into laughter.

"Then this old man shall lend you his strength."

Quest - Chain

History has chosen its stage. Whether hero or spectator is your decision.

Rank: Black

Objective: Aid Xiao Cheng in the succession war.

Reward: 10 Ability Points, Chain Quest Continues

Failure: ???

[Accept] [Refuse]

Karn accepted the request and instantly gained 10 stat points that which he spent immediately.

Charm: 20 --> 30

Karn did not notice a difference but he had decided to see if he could determine the effects of the stat.

"This junior will celebrate the start of our everlasting friendship by finishing this cup of tea then." Xiao Cheng spoke as he downed the cup of tea.

Karn laughed heartily and stood up.

"I presume the group of assassins in the forest are not your men then I presume, young master?" Karn had assumed the assassins were Xiao Cheng’s men but now he doubted the young master even knew about them.

"Assassins...?" he repeated quietly. Xiao Cheng’s hand froze halfway to the table. Li Xiang’s expression also immediately darkened.

"Senior... are you certain?" the advisor asked.

"Koko. I may be blind, but I am not senile. They have been watching this carriage since before I arrived." Karn chuckled.

Xiao Cheng slowly set his teacup down.

"...How many?" Karn tilted his head in thought.

"Four. One Tier One. The rest are Tier Two." Silence settled over the carriage as Karn said this.

"Impossible... I personally inspected the surroundings before we entered Crane Village." Li Xiang said as his face became pale.

"Koko, Advisor Li I am sure your methods are not bad but they are just simply quite adept at hiding from people looking for them." Karn said in response.

Karn turned his body towards the door outside.

"Koko, since this is the beginning of our friendship, allow this old man to give you a small gift." The grin on Karn’s face had returned for an instant. Karn grabbed his cheeks before the grin could fully bloom.

"A gift?" Xiao Cheng repeated, unsure whether the old man was joking.

"The heads of the people who came to kill you." Karn smiled.

"I put my safety in your hand then Senior." Xiao Cheng put his hands together and gave a deep bow towards Karn.

Karn left the carriage and walked towards his disciples.

"Master..." Both Rei and Shin spoke at the same time.

"There are two people in the bushes in the forest on our right." Rei whispered.

"There are people in the forest master!" Shin spoke out loud at the same time.

Rei looked at Shin in surprise. She had not told him of the assassins in case he made a big deal about it but it turned out Shin had already noticed them.

She had assumed the blindfold would result in him becoming useless but instead she realized she had been mistaken.

Shin was not trying to regain what he lost, he was learning to fight without it.

"Idiot, keep your voice down if you already know." Rei smacked Shin on his head.

"Good, both of you noticed. As expected of my little disciples." Karn spoke happily.
