The Scarlet King’s eyes looked straight at Valen and Qasim as he raised an eyebrow.
For a moment, Qasim felt a strange, heavy weight pressing down on him. Back when he was just a Mahik, he could feel the king’s pressure, but now...
*It’s like I’m being held by the neck... or like I’m an object being evaluated.*
Qasim tried to remain calm.
After several moments of uncomfortable silence, the king finally lowered his gaze back to the papers in his hands. However, he slowly shook his head.
That small gesture alone was strange and unexpected from the king. Even Aluna and Yorness had never seen him do that before.
"What’s the news regarding the war, Aluna?"
The king initiated the conversation.
Aluna stepped forward with her eyes closed.
"Things have been a bit unstable. We’ve encountered many unpredictable circumstances where the enemies used hidden technologies we’ve never seen before. According to our historians, they might be from that era."
The king raised his head for the second time during the meeting and looked at Aluna with cold, calculating eyes.
"I see... This will indeed be a problem."
He then returned his gaze to the papers.
"What about the royal guards? Did they change anything about the war?"
Aluna put on a smile before answering.
"Yes. Once they arrived, the whole situation got a lot better. In fact, one of our problems was that the army didn’t listen to us and only did enough to..."
Aluna paused, thinking of the right words before continuing.
"Just to avoid your Majesty’s punishment. But once the royal guards arrived, they managed to control the army much more efficiently. Now the tables have turned, and we’re expecting some good news."
Aluna then opened her eyes and tilted her head to the side.
"We’ve started hearing some rumors about a possible peace meeting where the kings of the three kingdoms will gather and negotiate to find a peaceful solution..."
The king simply nodded.
"Now, for Team Two... I actually didn’t expect Aurora to retire. So I will give the new Team Two some time to build up and gain experience."
The new leader of Team Two stiffened upon hearing the king’s words. He then bowed and thanked him.
The king then called out to Team Three while still looking at his papers.
Yorness stepped forward.
"Your Majesty, the situation regarding the terrorists known as The Zookeepers has been fully resolved. Team Four managed to kill their leader, and we cleaned up the remaining members right afterward."
His voice then became more serious, matching his expression.
"But we did find some strange documents that I would prefer to show directly to Your Majesty."
The king raised his head and looked at Yorness, who immediately lowered his head upon meeting the king’s gaze.
"Something so important that you have to show it directly to me... Well, it’s been ages since I was surprised three times in a single meeting."
"I approve your request. I was going to ask you to wait after the meeting anyway, since I, too, have something to ask of you."
Yorness’s eyes widened, and a big smile appeared on his face.
"Yes, my king!" he responded in an unusually happy tone.
The king then turned his head toward the last team.
"And for you... I will need you to do something for me."
Valen and Qasim lowered their heads respectfully as they heard the king’s words.
"I read about the dungeon mission back in the Goblin World... And now, after your great job in this past mission..."
He narrowed his eyes.
"You now also have three Hilal-Awal members, which means you will be able to carry out a very important job later. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Your Majesty!" both Valen and Qasim answered respectfully.
But then Valen stepped forward and did something the others wouldn’t dare to do.
"Your Majesty, can you give me access to the Royal Library as a reward for my hard work?"
The whole room quietly gasped.
Even Qasim was taken aback by Valen’s request.
*Not that I know what he’s asking for, but judging by everyone’s expressions, this might be something bad...*
Qasim looked around and saw Aluna covering her mouth, while Yorness had veins bulging from his forehead in anger.
Then he slowly looked at the king.
To his surprise, the king remained as calm, cold, and distant as always.
He then looked at Valen and noticed that his eyes were filled with determination, but his facial expression showed something new—something Qasim rarely ever saw on Valen.
Desperation.
"I see... I approve your request. You will get access to the Library for only two hours, starting tomorrow morning. Miss it, and you will not get another chance."
Valen’s eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open.
"T-Thank you, my k—"
"Valen, you little brat! You dare?!"
Yorness suddenly interrupted him, his face red with anger.
But before he could say anything else, the entire room fell under a cold gaze.
"Silence."
The king’s command was enough to make everyone obey.
He then returned his attention to the papers before dismissing everyone except Yorness.
On the way out, Qasim could feel the hateful looks coming from Team Three. Even though Yorness wasn’t with them anymore, they still clearly showed their anger toward Valen’s request.
*I have to ask him about this later...*
Qasim thought, but before he could continue, he heard someone calling him from behind.
"Valen and Qasim, it’s been a long time."
It was Aluna.
Qasim smiled at her, but before he could say anything, Valen grabbed his hand and walked past her while speaking.
"Yeah, it’s been so long, Aluna. I missed you, but we’re a bit in a hurry, so excuse us."
Qasim looked back at the confused Aluna, with Selena beside her and visibly fuming with anger, before turning his attention back to Valen.
From Qasim’s perspective, he had always found it difficult to understand what Valen was thinking.
But today was even more bizarre.
*What’s wrong with him...*
...
Back in the golden meeting room, Yorness stood before the king after they had discussed something.
His anger had now been replaced with shock.
His eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open. For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.
"Why are you so surprised?" the king asked coldly.
Yorness bit his lips before bowing respectfully and lowering his voice.
"My king, this is a bit too much. In my humble opinion, you should re—"
"Did you take a liking to that boy?"
The king cut him off coldly.
"Even after I told you that he is carrying something that could be dangerous inside his body?"
Yorness shook his head as sweat began covering his body.
"No, my king. It’s just that he is a very valuable resource for the kingdom. In fact, all of Team Four are valua—"
"Don’t worry. This won’t affect the whole team. Just the boy."
The king said this while tilting his head.
"I-I still think that Valen will not accept this and will try to protect the boy. Despite the fact that I personally hate Nusan’s student, I have to admit that he is a genius, and we cannot afford to lose him."
Yorness spoke as his breathing became heavier.
Then he blinked in fear when he heard the king let out a deep breath.
"Don’t worry. Valen is not a problem..."
The king then looked directly at Yorness and told him something that left the old man stunned in his place, completely unable to process what he had just heard.
...
After dismissing Yorness, the king sat there massaging his eyes while thinking.
*Is the boy related to the change I felt before?*
He stayed silent for a moment, then he just whispered in a disappointed tone.
" Unfortunately, he has that parasite in him, I would have taken him for myself otherwise..."
The king then raised his head and looked up, his gaze surpassing the mere ceiling and reaching the sky.
