Chapter 188: Chapter

Yueqing walked down the dark corridor with hurried steps, her eyes stinging with hot tears as the heavy memory of his words echoed in her mind. Lu Yue and Nine followed close behind, watching her silent misery without daring to ask a single question.

When they finally reached her chambers, Yueqing pushed the door open and rushed inside, her chest heaving.

Nine moved to follow her right through the doorway, but Lu Yue threw her arm out, blocking his path with a sharp glare.

"Where do you think you’re going?" Lu Yue hissed, crossing her arms. "She’s in her private bedchamber. A male guard has no business walking right in."

"I am her personal guard," Nine replied smoothly, his expression completely unbothered as he tried to step past her. "My duty is to stay close."

"Not in her private room, you don’t!" Lu Yue snapped, planting her feet firmly to bar the entrance. "Step back, mister fancy face. You wait out here in the hall."

Nine raised an eyebrow, a teasing smirk playing on his lips. "And if I say no?"

"Then I’ll make you regret it," Lu Yue fired back, glaring daggers at him.

They bickered back and forth in sharp, low whispers, Nine purposely pushing her buttons just to watch her get riled up. Completely consumed by the argument, Lu Yue finally let her guard down for a split second, tossing her hands up in frustration.

That was all Nine needed.

With a swift, fluid motion, Nine slipped right past her shoulder, ducking into the room before Lu Yue could even blink.

Click.

The heavy door slammed shut right in front of her face, leaving a stunned Lu Yue blinking at empty air in the hallway.

Inside the dim room, Yueqing paced back and forth like a trapped tiger, letting out all the anger, guilt, and annoyance bottled up inside her.

"The nerve of that walking block of wood!" Yueqing ranted, grabbing a porcelain vase and throwing it across the room. Crash! "Telling me to get out like a stray dog! After I almost cried looking at his scarred back!"

Clatter! A stack of pillows went flying.

Nine casually ducked out of the way of a flying mirror, picking it up and putting it back on the desk. As her system, he was not scared of the flying mess at all. He looked like someone watching a fun TV show.

"He is a tyrant! A total maniac!" Yueqing fumed, ripping a scroll off the wall and throwing it down. "Two months of torture? Well, maybe if he was not so mean, someone would have saved him sooner! Good grief, my heart actually felt bad for him for two seconds! What is wrong with me?!"

Nine easily dodged a flying tea saucer, picked it up, and nodded.

"You are completely right, Host," Nine said smoothly, stepping over some books to pick them up. "The man is unreasonable. If I were you, I would have thrown a heavier vase at his head."

Yueqing spun around, glaring at him with wide eyes as she grabbed a ceramic jar. "Right?! And then he looks at me like I committed a crime! Okay, fine, maybe I leaked the plans—well, I did not even leak his exact plans, I just warned the Third Prince not to go down that path! And now he treats me like a criminal when I am just trying to survive this mess!"

Thud. She slammed the jar onto the table.

Nine chuckled softly, tossing a pillow back onto the couch while dodging a flying embroidery ring. "A terrible main character, really. Should I use my system powers to mess with his tea? Just a little trick to defend your honor?"

Yueqing stopped, staring at him in disbelief. "System powers? You could not even stop him from kicking me out of his room."

"Ah, but my programming loves your dramatic freak-outs, Host," Nine said with a cheeky grin, stacking the last of the thrown items neatly on the desk. "Besides, watching you throw a tantrum is much more fun than any prize I could give you."

Yueqing spun around, her chest heaving as she glared right at Nine.

"And you!" she snapped, pointing an angry finger straight at his chest. "Why are you standing there grinning like a fool? Whose side are you even on? You are supposed to be my system, my only help in this crazy story! Instead, you are treating my breakdown like a joke!"

Nine did not flinch. He just held his hands up, letting her take out all her frustration on him since Wenzhe was gone.

"You are completely right, Host. I am sorry," Nine said smoothly, stepping closer. "Go ahead, take it all out on me. I can take a few insults. Better me than a angry general."

"You are useless!" Yueqing fumed, though her voice was starting to crack with tiredness. "Worst customer service ever! I want a refund!"

"The manager is not available, but this system is ready to help," Nine replied with a soft, calm laugh.

Before she could yell again, Nine gently caught her shoulders. Ignoring her weak protests, he guided her across the room and sat her down firmly on the edge of the bed.

"Okay, stop throwing things. You are going to make yourself sick," Nine said softly, kneeling down a bit so he could look right into her eyes. He reached up and gently pulled a stray leaf out of her hair. "Just breathe, Host. Let the anger go before you pass out."

Yueqing slumped forward, hiding her face in her hands as a long, defeated sigh escaped her. The sudden rush of anger was finally fading, leaving her with the harsh, heavy reality of what had just happened.

Yueqing dropped her hands from her face, staring miserably at the floor as a fresh wave of groans escaped her lips.

"I don’t want to go to any stupid palace banquet," Yueqing grumbled, burying her face in a pillow and kicking her legs in pure frustration. "I don’t even want to look at the Emperor’s face. Walking into that throne room is going to feel exactly like running into an ex who owes you money and broke your heart."

Nine leaned against the edge of the dresser, crossing his arms with an amused look in his eyes as he watched her melodrama.

"Well, speaking of exes and past encounters..." Nine teased, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "If we are talking about awkward meetings, let’s not forget that the Emperor was actually your very first target when you started taking missions, and the very first person you ever hooked up with."

Yueqing choked on her own breath, her head snapping up from the pillow as her face turned bright red. She lunged forward, grabbing a cushion and hurling it straight at his head.

"Shut up! We do not talk about that dark Chapter of my life!" Yueqing hissed, mortified, while Nine effortlessly caught the pillow with a laugh.
