Pioneer Lord: I Have Conquering System
Chapter 276 - 217: Flexing Muscles (2)"Get up, you lout. Your acting is pathetic. You haven’t learned a single thing from me."
The cries of pain stopped abruptly. The Beastman, who had just been on the ground looking severely injured, flipped over and scrambled to his feet. He patted his rear and stood beside his Lord, looking outrageously hale and hearty.
"Boss, I was just trying to let them have their moment of glory."
The nobles felt their vision go dark; they nearly choked with rage.
The Knights were also furious beyond belief and could no longer hold back. A tide of vulgar, rustic curses washed over the people of High Cliff Castle.
The Beastmen and Centaurs were not ones to be intimidated, and they unleashed a torrent of even cruder Wilderness slang that filled the air.
These burly men were especially loud, their voices booming as if through megaphones, and soon the air was filled with nothing but their vulgar slang.
"Silence!"
Fujero’s enraged roar suddenly drowned out all other voices.
He had clearly used some sort of sound-amplifying Magic.
Although Fujero was not these Knights’ direct superior, he was a Baron and a Legion Commander, so everyone quieted down for a moment.
"You’ve brought utter shame to the Northern Territory."
"You are a disgrace to Duke Fulina! As Knights, you brawl like common thugs, even disrespecting your Feudal Lord! Do you have any honor left?!"
Honor. What a lofty and distant word. In the eyes of some, it was more precious than life itself, more worthy of pursuit than all the gold in the world.
The Knights lowered their heads in shame. They were sworn Knights, masters of Martial Arts with profound Combat Qi Cultivation. They were, without a doubt, the cream of the crop, the elite of the elite. That was why they were so arrogant and proud, why they held their honor dearer than life itself.
The men from High Cliff Castle, on the other hand, felt not an ounce of shame. Instead, they puffed out their chests and held their heads high with smug satisfaction, as if they had just won a great victory.
"I hope you all realize what a malicious incident this brawl was. We are on the brink of war, yet we are fighting amongst ourselves. This will surely make us a laughingstock."
Fulina stepped forward, her voice gravely serious. No one could miss the warning in her tone.
"Duke, with all due respect."
A slender, middle-aged noble with a little moustache stepped forward. This was Count Tess, one of the old-guard nobles who held the Lion Hunter Knight in the lowest regard.
His Guard Knight had been one of the main parties in this brawl.
"Without a doubt, the Lord of High Cliff Castle must bear the primary responsibility for this incident."
It wasn’t difficult to piece together what had sparked the incident; a few simple questions would reveal everything.
"My men told me it was his subordinates who first launched a surprise attack on them outside the training grounds, leading to what I would call our most despicable incident in recent memory."
"Count Tess, your words are hardly fair," Levi said unhurriedly. "My men tell me it was your people who first insulted a Baron—a formal noble—which is what led to this tragedy."
"You must know, according to the Laws of Debei, a commoner who insults a noble must be brought before the noble court. My men were simply defending the honor of their lord."
This law did exist, but it was purely for show. After all, countless people cursed nobles in private; it was impossible to arrest them all.
No one had expected it to be brought up as a point of contention now.
"Even so, the matter should have been brought before the noble court, to be judged by the Elders of the Noble Garden! It is not for your men to exercise the authority of the Noble Garden!"
Tess shot back immediately. The Count was growing heated, his tone becoming overbearing. He seemed the type to argue his point even when he was in the wrong.
There was no denying that this Lion Hunter Knight, who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, was a capable man, both in terms of personal strength and influence. But Count Tess still looked down on him; after all, he was just a minor Baron.
The fact that this place had become a stage for Levi to flex his muscles displeased him even more, and his impression of this Baron of Exploration hit rock bottom.
"Count Tess’s words are pure sophistry. In my opinion, Baron Levi’s men did nothing wrong."
"After all, who could contain their anger when their lord is insulted?"
A slender noble dressed in a tailcoat stepped forward, a smile on his face.
"I agree with Count Andao. Besides, the Knights who failed to stop the fight and instead joined in must also bear some responsibility."
An elderly, pot-bellied noble with a white beard chimed in, then gave the Lord a friendly smile.
On the matter of responsibility, the nobles present immediately split into two factions. About thirty percent believed the Lord was not at fault; these were the nobles who held the Lord of High Cliff Castle in a favorable light.
The remaining seventy percent placed all the blame squarely on Levi’s head.
Thirty percent of the nobles present had Guard Knights who had not participated in the brawl.
Both sides were adamant, and for a moment, it looked as if another argument would erupt.
"Enough!"
This time, Fulina’s voice was laced with genuine anger, cutting off the nobles’ pointless squabbling. She scanned the crowd, her stern voice ringing clearly in the sudden silence.
"This matter ends here. All of you, control your subordinates. Do not let another incident that brings shame upon me occur. Otherwise, you, as their lords, will find yourselves facing me in a military tribunal."
"The Martel Family will not tolerate such malicious acts of infighting!"
All the nobles immediately fell silent, nodding in assent.
Fulina gave Levi a long, hard look before turning to leave, striding away under his smiling gaze.
In all honesty, as the Feudal Lord to everyone present (save for one particular person), she knew that if she sided with the Lion Hunter Knight, she would inevitably displease her Vassals. But if she sided with her established followers, it would appear unjust.
Therefore, her only choice was to de-escalate the situation, turning a major incident into a minor one and resolving it with a warning.
Count Tess snorted coldly and left with his Guard Knights.
One of the Knights had two distinct black eyes, his face so bruised and swollen it looked like a pig’s head. He flinched and ducked his head when he met the Lord’s gaze.
This was the Knight who had first confronted Mier and the others. After the Lord found out, he had "paid special attention" to the man with a few extra punches. It seemed the results were quite effective.
"Thank you all for your help."
Levi said, thanking the few nobles before him who had shown him their support.
’I’m the type who responds to kindness, not coercion.’ His impression of these nobles who had proactively helped him was quite good, based on their actions alone.
"To be honest, even without our help, the Duke most likely would have made a big show of things before letting the matter drop."
The noble who had first spoken in Levi’s defense extended a hand. "I am Andao Tili. I must say, the Lion Hunter Knight’s appearance is completely different from the rumors."
"I imagine you’re about to become the man of many a noble lady’s dreams."
He finished with a mischievous wink, his meaning obvious.
’Damn, this guy’s a kindred spirit.’
With just that one sentence, the Lord mentally slapped a label on Count Andao.
’This guy absolutely frequents brothels!’
"And you must be Count Luke," the Lord said, extending his hand to the pot-bellied, elderly noble standing nearby.
Levi remembered with perfect clarity that he was one of only two Counts who had written to him to express goodwill. He had even asked Si Kai about both of them before.
Count Luke’s appearance was so distinctive that Levi was certain he hadn’t mistaken him for someone else.
The other minor nobles came forward to make his acquaintance before tactfully taking their leave, leaving him with the two Counts.
"Sir Levi, I presume you’ve read my letter. I personally feel that you and my third daughter would have much to discuss."
"I’m even more convinced of it after seeing what you did today."
Luke Fuss’s portly face bore an exceedingly warm smile, the kind that couldn’t help but endear him to anyone.
