"Name?"
"Regulo Durant."
"Why are you the only one left holding out here?"
"My Lord, I’m afraid I want to know the answer to that more than you do."
In the great hall of the Baron Castle, the Lord sat on the main seat with his legs crossed, the very picture of a Northern Warlord.
Tess and Andao stood by his side. Though both were Counts, at this moment, they looked more like common soldiers.
But no one dared to say a word. After all, this was the monster of a man who had single-handedly thrashed three Stone Giants.
"My Lord, you’ve asked everything there is to ask. I truly don’t know where those three Casters went."
Baron Regulo spread his hands helplessly.
To be honest, if he knew how Clamo had broken through the perimeter of Jackal Wolfman Cavalry and escaped, he wouldn’t be here now.
"For a prisoner, you’re calmer than the defeated soldiers. Not the least bit worried about what might happen to you." Levi shot a glance at the Baron of Kalia Town.
To be honest, before he had even entered the Baron Castle, the Lord had imagined many different scenarios.
A warrior fighting to the death, or perhaps a coward who, too ashamed to live on, had taken his own life.
But it was neither. The man had been sitting quietly in the great hall, drinking. When he saw them swarm in, he’d even raised his cup and asked if they wanted some.
It almost made everyone think the Baron had snapped under the pressure and gone mad.
"Worry? About spending the rest of my life in the Water Prison? Or waiting for a ransom? Or being used in a trade with Damon?" Regulo smiled. "You’re not just going to chop off my head, are you?"
Unless there was some deep, bitter feud, a captured noble would most likely be ransomed or used in a trade.
After all, a living noble is always more valuable than a dead one.
This was the source of Regulo’s confidence.
He recalled that the only time he had ever offended this Lion Hunter Knight was at Duke Kolon’s banquet, where he and other nobles had laughed at his complete lack of noble-like table manners.
Such a trivial matter was surely not enough to make the man chop his head off.
After all, anyone who wasn’t incredibly petty would have long forgotten such a minor incident.
"Bingo. You guessed right. Too bad there’s no prize." The Lord smiled and snapped his fingers.
Seeing the serious expression on his face, Regulo’s smile froze.
Beside them, Tess beamed, drawing his longsword, eager for a chance to use it.
If anyone hated the Baron before them, it was him. The number of soldiers lost in the town was a source of great anguish for Tess, and he himself had been wounded—his chest was still wrapped in bandages.
"I do, in fact, want to chop off your head. Let’s put aside the fact that when you chose to support Damon, you became a complete Oathbreaker in the eyes of Miss Liya. Killing you is perfectly in line with the laws of Debei."
"And that’s not to mention that at Duke Kolon’s banquet... you were the one laughing the loudest, weren’t you, Baron Regulo?"
Levi’s tone shifted as he smiled, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the forty-something Baron with the bald head and thick, bushy beard.
’Shit, the bastard actually remembered that.’
Regulo’s face darkened. He instinctively opened his mouth to curse, but at the last second, he remembered he was now a prisoner and forced the words back, remaining silent.
He gave off an air of resignation, as if to say, ’Whatever you say, goes.’
At that moment, Levi really wanted to say, ’I liked you better when you were wild and defiant.’
’After all, the tables have turned. You all mocked me then, but now I’m completely out of your league.’
He smacked his lips and finally just waved a hand.
"Throw him in the Water Prison. Before Duke Fulina decides how to deal with him, let’s make sure this is an experience he won’t forget."
Two Beastman Barbarians immediately came forward, hoisted up the short man, and dragged him away to the Water Prison.
"I’m going too," Count Tess said, clenching his fists until the knuckles cracked.
In an instant, only a few of the commanders were left in the Baron Castle.
"Levi, I just went through all the letters sent from Kolon. They’re all just orders from different times telling Regulo to hold his fief. There’s no other useful information." Count Andao tossed a stack of letters with broken wax seals onto the table. He pressed his hands to his temples, his face a mask of frustration. "The letters only say that support will arrive, but with no specific time or place. It proves this so-called support was just empty words from Damon to keep him in line. I don’t get it. I don’t get it at all."
"Forget about it. Let Duke Fulina get a headache over this one," Levi said after a moment’s thought. "Send a carrier pigeon to the rear. Tell them Kalia Town has fallen, and ask whether we should advance or rest and wait for them."
They had been interrogating Regulo for some time now, and he was just as confused about the situation, which meant he’d basically been screwed over by Damon.
Like Andao, Levi couldn’t figure out why Damon, a Golden Lion Knight renowned for his military talent, would make such a basic error.
But since he couldn’t figure it out, he decided not to dwell on it.
The truth would come out eventually.
Count Andao nodded, a smile spreading across his face. "We took down a bridgehead all on our own. With this victory, our contributions to the southern campaign will be ranked high no matter what happens."
Though they numbered thirty thousand, they only had twenty thousand combat-ready soldiers. To have breached a town defended by nearly four thousand men—almost the size of a small legion—and three High Tier Mages was an achievement that would undoubtedly leave a glorious mark on their military careers.
Add to that capturing a Baron alive, and this victory was basically enough to earn a Knight a promotion to Baron.
