Chapter 319: Chapter 320 - Suffocating

The drive through the overgrown roads was, to put it mildly, painfully dull.

Hana leaned against the car window, her cheek resting against the cool glass as she gazed absently into the distance. The road ahead was barely recognizable anymore, swallowed by nature as weeds, vines, and wild grass pushed through the cracks in the old asphalt. Trees crowded both sides of the road, their branches swaying gently in the wind and occasionally brushing against the vehicles as they passed.

Every now and then, the soft chirping of birds could be heard somewhere among the trees.

It was strangely peaceful.

And yet, there was something unsettling about that peace.

This world had changed so much in only a matter of months.

Sometimes Hana found it difficult to believe that the life they had once known had actually existed. The normal world—the one with schools, crowded streets, noisy shops, ordinary days, and problems that had once seemed so important—was gone.

It wasn’t coming back.

Normalcy was something that belonged to the past now.

Ironically, she had once hated school more than anything.

Now, she would give almost anything to complain about homework again.

A quiet sigh escaped her lips.

Hana shifted her gaze from the scenery outside and looked at the people sitting beside her.

Shao had one arm wrapped around Jai, pulling the younger man comfortably against his side. Jai was sleeping peacefully, seemingly unconcerned about the ruined world outside. His head rested against Shao’s shoulder, his breathing slow and even.

As for her brother...

Of course, Yunfeng was making those ridiculously lovesick eyes at his lover.

Hana rolled her eyes so hard she nearly gave herself a headache.

She was at an age where people supposedly started falling in love.

At least, that was what everyone had always told her.

Love was supposed to bloom naturally. She was supposed to meet someone, fall for them, and experience all those wonderful romantic feelings people talked about.

But where exactly was she supposed to find someone?

Everyone around her was gay.

And that wasn’t even the worst part.

Apparently, she had turned out to be an omega.

An omega.

What the hell was that even supposed to mean?

She had spent enough time around them to understand that apparently she needed an alpha.

An alpha.

Hana’s expression twisted.

Her eyes slowly shifted toward the alpha sitting nearby.

Shao.

The man was huge.

Muscular, broad-shouldered, and tall enough to make most people look small beside him. He had the kind of physique that made it obvious he could probably carry someone under one arm without breaking a sweat.

Hana stared at him for a few seconds.

Then she grimaced.

Definitely not her type.

Her gaze shifted toward her own brother.

Yunfeng.

The man who had once been slender had somehow developed a ridiculous amount of muscle over the past few months. He was no longer the lean young man she remembered. Now he looked like some kind of oversized mammoth.

Hana silently stared at the two men.

Then she sighed.

I guess I’m really not into these alpha-type guys...

Turning her attention back toward the window, she rested her forehead against the glass.

Guess I’m going to be all alone in this lifetime...

Her heart sank slightly at the thought.

Before she could dwell on it any longer, the car suddenly lurched.

"Whoa!"

The vehicle jerked violently before making a rough grinding sound and finally coming to a complete stop.

Hana’s head snapped up.

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she turned toward her brother.

"What did you do now?"

Yunfeng immediately glared at her.

"Can you shut it with your attitude?"

He tapped impatiently against the meter before looking down at it again.

A second later, his expression darkened.

"We’re out of gas..."

He dragged a hand down his face.

"Fuck. This car is drinking gas like a fucking thirsty well!"

Hana raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

Yunfeng looked around.

Behind them, the second vehicle had also slowed down before coming to a stop.

A moment later, Zei leaned his head out from the driver’s side window.

"What happened?"

"I’m out of gas," Yunfeng called back.

Zei glanced at the meter in his own vehicle and frowned.

"We’re running dry too."

He looked around at the dense forest surrounding them.

"Shall we stop here?"

Yunfeng rolled down the window and looked outside.

The road was almost completely swallowed by the surrounding jungle-like forest. Thick vegetation stretched as far as the eye could see, with towering trees blocking much of the sunlight. There wasn’t another vehicle or building anywhere in sight.

After a moment, Yunfeng spoke.

"You guys go ahead. See if you can find some gas for us."

Zei’s handsome face immediately tightened with concern. "I’m not sure it’s safe, though. Splitting up like this..."

"It’s the only option." Yunfeng opened the car door and stepped out. He walked around to Muchen’s side and opened the door. "You go to the other car."

Muchen just scoffed. "No."

Yunfeng frowned. "Muchen, it’s safer."

"No, thank you. I’m staying with you."

"Muchen, please..." Yunfeng’s expression softened. The irritation in his voice disappeared, replaced by a gentle smile as he looked at his lover.

"I’ll meet you soon, okay?"

Muchen stared at him for a moment.

Then he folded his arms.

"No, thank you. I’ll stay right where you are."

Yunfeng sighed.

Before he could argue further, Muchen turned his gaze toward Zei.

"You guys get back soon. Be fast and be safe, okay?"

Zei gave him a quick nod before raising his hand in a casual salute.

"Got it."

With that, he climbed back into the driver’s seat.

The engine roared to life, and the second vehicle slowly pulled away, disappearing down the overgrown road.

Hana climbed out of the car, stretching her stiff legs before reaching up to fix her tangled hair. The long drive had left it a complete mess, with several strands stubbornly falling across her face.

"What are you doing? Get in."

Yunfeng frowned at her from beside the car, clearly unimpressed by her decision to get out.

"I want some fresh air, jeez. Why are you always snapping at me?"

Hana shot him an irritated glare before turning away from him.

Without waiting for his response, she slowly walked around the vehicle, taking in their surroundings.

The moment she stepped away from the cramped interior of the car, she felt a little better. The cool air brushed against her face, carrying the earthy scent of damp soil and overgrown vegetation. After being cooped up inside for so long, even the quietness of the forest felt refreshing.

Still, the entire situation was far from comfortable.

It was suffocating, to say the least.
