Chapter 320: Chapter 321 - Feild of red
Hana continued walking for a while, careful not to stray too far from the cars. She could still see glimpses of the vehicles through the trees whenever she turned around, so she wasn’t particularly worried.
After being trapped inside the cramped car for hours, she simply wanted a little space to stretch her legs and breathe properly.
Taking a deep breath, she looked around with a small smile. The forest was strangely peaceful. Sunlight filtered through the thick canopy overhead, painting shifting patches of gold across the moss-covered ground, while the faint rustling of leaves and occasional chirping of birds filled the otherwise quiet air.
It was almost beautiful.
Hana slowed down, glancing around with a small smile. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been somewhere that looked so untouched.
The world outside had become a nightmare of ruined cities, abandoned buildings, blood, zombies, and mutated creatures. Even the countryside they had passed through had been littered with signs of destruction.
Yet here, nature seemed to have completely reclaimed everything. Vines climbed the trunks of enormous trees, tiny flowers grew between the roots, and the damp earth smelled fresh after what seemed like an eternity of smelling smoke and decay.
For a moment, Hana simply stood there and enjoyed it.
Then something small and red fluttered past her face.
Her eyes immediately followed it.
A butterfly.
Hana’s expression brightened.
It was a tiny thing, with beautiful crimson wings decorated with delicate black patterns around the edges. The sunlight caught its wings whenever it moved, making them shimmer as it lazily fluttered between the trees.
It had been so long since she’d seen something so ordinary and pretty that she couldn’t help feeling strangely delighted. She had almost forgotten that creatures like this still existed.
Slowly, Hana raised her hand and held out her index finger.
"Come here."
The butterfly circled her once before landing delicately on her fingertip.
Hana smiled. "You’re cute." She carefully brought her hand closer to her face, studying the tiny creature. For a few seconds, it remained perfectly still, its wings opening and closing slowly.
Then she felt a sudden prick.
"Ow!"
Hana jerked her hand backward.
The butterfly immediately fluttered away.
She stared at her fingertip in disbelief. There was only a tiny red mark where the creature had touched her. "Did you just bite me?"
She looked after the butterfly, mildly offended, before rubbing the little mark with her thumb. It barely hurt anymore.
"Rude."
Hana shook her head and decided it was probably nothing. Perhaps it was some kind of insect that merely looked like a butterfly. After everything that had happened since the apocalypse, she really shouldn’t have been surprised by strange insects.
She turned around and began walking back toward the vehicles. She had only taken a few steps when another red butterfly fluttered past her shoulder.
Hana stopped.
She frowned and glanced after it.
Then another butterfly appeared.
A third drifted lazily between the branches above her.
Hana slowly turned in a circle hart thudding loudly in her chest.
Field of red surrounded her.
The beautiful red butterflies were emerging from between the trees, fluttering through the shafts of sunlight and drifting toward her from every direction. At first there were only a few dozen, but the number seemed to increase every second. Soon the air around her was filled with tiny crimson wings.
One landed on her shoulder. "What the..." Hana panicked and brushed it away.
They began landing on her arms and clothes, crawling over her shoulders and fluttering around her face. Hana waved her hands frantically, trying to keep them away, but the more she pushed them aside, the more seemed to appear.
"Go away!"
The butterflies suddenly surged toward her. Hana screamed and covered her face with both arms as the swarm descended.
"Yunfeng!"
Her voice tore through the forest.
"Yunfeng! Help!"
Back near the vehicles, Yunfeng’s head snapped toward the sound. His enhanced hearing immediately picked up Hana’s scream.
Muchen looked at him anxiously. "What happened?"
"Hana!"
Muchen instinctively reached for him, but Yunfeng turned back immediately.
"Stay here."
"But—"
"Stay in the car, Muchen."
He slammed the door shut and rushed into the forest.
The moment Shao heard Hana screaming, he looked toward Jai who woke up dazedly.
"You stay here too."
Jai immediately frowned. "I’m coming with you."
"No." Shao opened the door and stepped out. "Stay with Muchen."
"But—" Shao shut the door before Jai could finish.
He immediately checked that all the windows were locked before turning and running after Yunfeng.
Inside the vehicle, Jai pressed himself against the window, watching the trees disappear around Shao.
"What is happening?"
Muchen didn’t answer. He was watching anxiously as well.
A few moments later, they heard another scream.
Then Yunfeng’s voice.
"Hana!"
Shao accelerated.
They pushed through the thick vegetation until the scene finally came into view.
Yunfeng’s expression hardened.
Hana was standing in the middle of a swirling mass of red butterflies. They covered the air around her so densely that her body was barely visible beneath them. She was desperately waving her arms and trying to protect her face while the insects repeatedly landed on her exposed skin.
"Hana!"
She looked toward him.
"Yunfeng!"
He immediately summoned his powers. Blue flames erupted from his palm and spread outward in a wide arc. The sudden burst of heat sent the butterflies scattering, and several of them dropped lifelessly to the ground.
For a brief moment, Hana could breathe. Panting she rushed towards him.
Yunfeng hugged her tight. "Are you hurt?" panicked he checked her arms and legs. They were covered in small pink prick wounds.
"I don’t know!" Hana rubbed frantically at her arms. "They keep biting me!"
"Shao get back. You’re in the range of my flames!" Yunfeng immediately moved in front of her and released another wave of blue flames. The fire roared between the trees, forcing the butterflies backward.
But there were simply too many.
The swarm moved around the flames rather than directly through them, splitting into several groups before beginning to circle them from every direction.
Yunfeng’s eyes narrowed. "Fuck, they’re avoiding the fire."
