Chapter 327: Chapter 328 - Follow the tracks
While everyone else was panicking, Hana was in a state of complete zen. A truly relaxed state, to be sure. She simply lay on the dirty floor, gazing up through the grimy glass ceiling of the mall. Every now and then, a dried leaf would drift across the glass, catching her attention for a moment before disappearing from view.
A few butterflies fluttered around her as well, occasionally brushing past her hair.
Hana merely sighed and let them be. As long as they didn’t bite her, everything was fine.
After a while, someone sat down beside her and held out a bottle of Coke.
Hana looked at the guy, then at the drink in his hand. "Thanks. A cold drink with a view is a pretty nice way to spend the evening."
Mumbling to herself, she cracked open the bottle. It fizzed softly before popping, and she immediately took a long gulp from the large bottle. The cold, refreshing drink slid down her throat, lifting her mood slightly.
"Why are you holding me here anyway?"
She turned to look at him, though, obviously, she wasn’t expecting an answer. The boy simply stared at her with the same quiet expression he always wore.
Sighing, Hana continued talking to herself. "Yunfeng is going to be so worried about me. I bet he’s throwing a tantrum and running down every single tree-lined road looking for me right now..."
The image brought a small smile to her face.
"But he does look like a tomato when he’s angry. His face gets all red and blushy..." She snickered softly. "I don’t know who he inherited such thin skin from. Mine is thick. If I blush, no one can even see it."
She glanced at the boy again.
The boy simply nodded.
Hana blinked.
"Why are you nodding if you can’t understand what I’m saying?" Sitting up, she peered at him silently for a moment before curiosity got the better of her. "Why are you here all alone? Don’t you have a family? Friends? No one?"
The boy seemed to understand at least one word from everything she had said. He slowly lifted a hand and gestured toward the butterflies fluttering around them.
"They’re your friends?"
He nodded.
"Oh." Hana looked at the butterflies, then back at him. "That sounds kind of lonely."
A small hint of pity crept into her expression. It was understandable, in a way, why this boy had kidnapped her. He was probably just too lonely and needed someone to keep him company. At least, that was the explanation Hana had settled on.
"What about this?" she suggested, suddenly brightening. "Why don’t you join us? There’s eight of us. One more person won’t be such a burden. My brother and my friends are all pretty powerful. Even I’m strong. I can help you get to the human base."
The boy simply frowned.
"Come on. They’re fun to be with. You and I can be play partners. We can chat, play games... it’ll be fun." She tried her best to entice him, smiling as she spoke.
Somehow, his expression seemed to soften, as though he was actually considering her suggestion.
Hana didn’t give him much time to think.
She suddenly jumped to her feet, grabbed his hand, and pulled him up with her. "Let’s go."
If she couldn’t go outside alone, then she might as well bring this boy with her.
"Create that black-hole thing you did before. Let’s go back to the place where you found me."
The boy frowned and glanced up at the butterflies surrounding them.
"Come on, it’s getting late. We have to eat something." Hana tugged on his hand impatiently. "Brother Jai can cook a really tasty meal. I want to eat something..."
She gave him a slightly exaggerated whine, hoping to convince him.
The boy hesitated at first, but after a moment, he finally raised his hand.
The familiar black hole slowly appeared in front of them.
Hana’s eyes lit up. Without hesitation, she tightened her grip on his hand and pulled him toward it, jumping straight inside.
The butterflies followed after them, fluttering eagerly into the darkness before the black hole closed on its own.
Hana hurriedly looked around as she stepped out of the black-hole-like portal, her eyes immediately searching the road and the surrounding trees for any sign of her family. But there was nothing. No familiar cars, no voices, no sign of Yunfeng or the others.
The boy beside her seemed extremely uncomfortable being there. He kept glancing around nervously, his body shrinking in on itself as he nervously twisted and played with the sleeve of his hoodie.
Hana’s heart tightened.
If she didn’t find her family soon, there was a chance the boy might decide to take both of them back to that strange place, and she definitely didn’t want that.
She quickly grabbed his hand.
"It’s okay. It’s safe here. Don’t worry." She gave him an encouraging smile and gently squeezed his hand. "I’m with you. I’ll protect you."
With that, she slowly began pulling him back toward the road.
Three different sets of tire tracks were clearly visible in the dirt, all heading in the same direction.
Hana’s eyes immediately brightened.
"Its them! It’s my family!" she exclaimed, pointing toward the tracks. "We just have to follow these tracks..."
She forced as much confidence into her voice as she could, even though deep down, her heart was beginning to grow uneasy.
Night was approaching.
The light was already fading between the trees, and Hana knew better than anyone that wandering around outside after dark was dangerous. Zombies could be hiding anywhere in the forest, and if they were attacked now, there was no guarantee she could protect herself, let alone the strange boy beside her.
Soon it got dark, very dark.
Still, she tightened her grip on his hand and started walking.
The butterflies spread out in front of them as if trying to lead them somewhere. Their red bodies started to glow a bit in the moonlight making them look like little fireflies in the dark.
It was quite a fascinating sight.
