Kael wanted to ask Selene if she had eaten something that was making her spout bullshit. After all, him being a danger to this world? Did that even make sense? He was working with the world’s magic to prevent its destruction.

But the look on Selene’s face was so serious that Kael felt his breath hitch in his throat.

Selene noticed his hesitation and reached toward him with a gentle look in her eyes.

"Don’t worry too much. I promise I will be gentle with you. You won’t even feel what I am about to do to you."

Selene reached toward Kael with a gentle hand before she caressed his cheek in a comforting manner. But instead of making Kael feel better, it made him feel as if cold slime were washing over his skin.

It was not Selene’s touch that was making Kael feel nervous, but the energy behind her. It felt too much like corruption.

"Hey, are you sure it is the ’high-elf’s’ magic that is guiding your actions? I can sense corruption on you-"

The gentle hand turned harsh, and Selene grabbed Kael’s cheek tightly.

"Don’t get too ahead of yourself. I won’t take any insults you make toward my elf magic lying down. Next time, I will break your jaw if you make such careless remarks. Do you understand?"

Selene asked, but her words did not make Kael feel scared. Instead, they told him that he still had to escape, and all he had to do was distract Selene long enough for other people to come and find them.

So he chose a topic Selene looked interested in and started a conversation.

"Hey, since you are going to purify me, can you at least tell me more about the elves’ inheritance magic? I feel like I deserve to know since I am going to experience it soon."

Kael’s interest in elf arts took Selene aback. Her eyes looked nervous, and her mouth opened and closed, likely unsure of what to say.

It was clear that she wanted to say something, but the words failed her when she tried to speak.

"You...want to know more about elf magic? What kind of trick are you trying to pull here? You won’t be able to stop me just because you showed a little interest in my arts."

Selene warned Kael, but the slight blush on her cheeks said otherwise.

In Kael’s eyes, she looked like a repressed kid who was dying to talk about her interests but had never found anyone willing to listen. But since Kael had suddenly appeared before her and even shown interest, she was now conflicted.

Seeing this, Kael decided to press a little more to get Selene to open up.

"I am not trying to pull any tricks here. I am an avid fan of all kinds of magic, and I like to collect knowledge about it. Is it so absurd that I would want to know more about the elves and their powers as well?"

Kael asked, and Selene finally looked relieved to hear those words. Her mind cleared a little, and she coughed to hide her nervousness.

"It seems like you are a capable person who knows the value of knowledge. Hmm, since we have time before the ceremony, I suppose I can tell you a little about the elves and the origin of our knowledge."

Selene tried her hardest to restrain herself, but she ended up falling for Kael’s trick in the end.

Kael had already known that Selene was a repressed kid without friends, and he had simply made use of that knowledge to win her favor.

It did not even feel scummy because it was his life on the line.

"Hmm, where should we start? Ah, do you know the origin of the elves? They say we appeared out of thin air one day. Our legends say that the World Tree bore our ancestors before bursting into flames. And those flames became the origin of our power as well."

Selene began, and Kael found himself genuinely interested in hearing her out.

After all, even if he was doing this to buy time, who said he could not enjoy story time as well?

Selene was distracted while telling her story, so Kael used the opportunity to form a small familiar in his hands and send it to the first person he could think of to help him.

Now, it was only a matter of keeping Selene distracted until help arrived.

Suddenly, another path opened up before Kael. It was the path where he could get Selene to trust him and convince her to let him go.

It was far more dangerous, and Kael was not sure whether he would be able to pull it off or not. But it felt worth trying.

And if it did not work, then there was no problem. He already had another plan as a backup. Adrian would make sure he returned home alive by any means necessary.

For now, Kael needed to listen to Selene talk about the history of the elves and what they meant to this empire. He had a feeling he would discover a lot of important things if he did.

And as expected, the more Selene spoke, the happier she looked. And the happier she looked, the better Kael’s chances of survival became.

Selene finished with a flush of happiness on her face. She looked satisfied after finally being able to tell someone about the origin of the elves and the stories they carried.

"Is that all you have to say? Those stories were interesting, but I have a feeling you have more to tell me."

Kael pressed Selene as soon as she finished, and she looked eager to say more. But she changed her mind the moment she opened her mouth. The frown on her face was a clear indication that she was hesitating.

But Kael needed her to keep talking for the sake of his own safety.
