"The world is growing fast, and that's a good thing, but here in the US, it's growing too fast.
The government's laws and society's sense of morality can't keep up with changes.
Now we know not to rig elections, but what happens when the favourite contestant is a shithead?"
I had thoughts, mostly doubts and questions about what Jamie said, but held my tongue.
Watching the man relish with my stick had my hands itching to also have a go, but I wanted to present an image.
"You're being too pessimistic. We'll keep up."
Nothing had prompted Jamie to get on this topic.
We had just been enjoying the silence when he began speaking, and if I wasn't wrong, I believed he was actually venting.
"The people behind the scenes keep a tight leash on things, keeping everyone in line and events in order.
What happens when our mistakes are no longer of consequence to us?"
I cocked my head, finally wanting to ask for clarification, but Jamie suddenly lifted his hand, pointing to our right.
"Your man is here."
My eyes shifted in the direction of his finger, looking far to find a limousine driving outside the gate of the precinct. Going past the gates, it should have turned in.
"Seems he isn't interested in being modest."
Understanding who Jamie might be referring to, I immediately cursed in my mind, screaming at myself for not figuring it out sooner.
Echo!!
Back in Michigan, for the party he had thrown, Sky had made sure to arrive at the last minute, making his entry in a chopper.
He acted humble, but I had forgotten that was all an addition, it made perfect sense for his character that he came in a limo.
In no time, I received feedback on the world around me, getting an accurate view of Sky sitting in the limo.
Hahaha!!
Jamie's laugh brought me back to him, and the man grinned as he caught my gaze.
"To arrive in a limo. That boy is so arrogant, no way he doesn't know the governor is present."
As Jamie finished speaking, there were the rapid sounds of footsteps behind me, heels clacking with utmost haste.
Before I even turned, I knew who it was.
My gaze settled on Nadia, and as her mouth opened, I raised my hand, saving her breath.
"I know."
Nodding, Nadia's gaze moved to Jamie, and I was surprised when recognition flashed in her eyes.
"Sir," the woman made a small bow, looking a bit lost for words.
"I'll leave you to your duties, Mr. Lawson.
Hopefully we meet again."
Jamie didn't linger any further, his legs immediately carrying him away. Though curious, I faced the anxious expression of my PA.
"You should calm down.
I'm actually glad Sky didn't come here.
I spent the last few minutes mentally puking at having to suck up to him. Let the hungry pigs outside kiss his ass."
I kept my voice low, but Nadia heard me clearly, and her jaw slightly became loose.
Echo!!
"I thought Sky was important to you."
"Of course he is, but only for a period."
Done observing the 3D model in my head, I focused on my PA.
"His flamboyant entrance might have more than one benefit, though.
You were in the hall, what was the governor's attitude towards all of this? Is he in true support of the charity and its founders, or just here for the cameras?"
Nadia took a second to reply, smacking her lips.
"I can't say for the latter, but he looked completely in favor of the organization, especially when he took a personal look at the vehicles and equipment donated."
"Okay, let's go in."
A smile crossing her face at my words, Nadia and I stepped into the building behind us.
Already aware of the internal layout, my PA led the way, taking me through long corridors and a few doors, the policemen keeping security recognizing us at every turn.
Our destination was basically the back door of the precinct, and in no time, we stepped out from under the cover, once more entering the light, joining a group who sat behind the stage.
At the moment, most people were standing, their eyes trained forward, and it took me a glance ahead to spot Sky approaching.
"Not bad."
The proclaimed youngest billionaire had cleaned up well. His blue suit screamed an exquisiteness that could be termed as rare, even for someone like me.
His skin glowed under the sun, and his hair looked like the softest thing one could possibly touch in their life.
"Gay," I silently mumbled, seeing the bright smile he had on as he shook hands with multiple individuals in his path.
Turning from the man, I looked to my left, my eyes scoping out a personal worry of mine.
Denise had come for the event, but due to Nadia's desire for leadership, she had taken a backseat.
At the moment, she was in a corner of the crowd, talking with a middle-aged man whose eyes spent 90% of the time strained on her breasts.
"Pervert," I hissed under my breath, totally squashing the hypocrisy—or maybe irony.
"Ahh, not bad," I chuckled within.
Sky was approaching, but the governor had remained seated. What was most interesting was that the man was following a trajectory which led him away from the esteemed politician.
The common man would see this and think it was a coincidence, but one thing I had learned about the world I was in was that nothing was a coincidence.
It was all thought out, everyone knew what they were doing.
The seconds passed, and eventually, the man of the hour got to me.
"Marcus!!"
With a grin on his face, when he got to my turn, Sky and I engaged in a partial hug before shaking hands.
"Glad to see you here, my friend."
"Likewise."
Cameras flashed on the two of us, murmurs picking up in the crowd, but everyone was orderly.
Behind Sky, having followed him all this while, was not just his secretary but also Annie, and looking at her, I could see the hidden worry in her gaze.
