Red Monster

Chapter 135: Utilizing Mana Differently

Red couldn’t see the mana, but he sensed it. The mana coated the beast’s tails before they attacked. It was not just the beast with the blade-like tail; the bigger beast also did so.

He sensed their mana, moving from the body toward their tail. It materialized around the tail and coated it entirely before the tail slammed toward the Elite Kobold Fighter.

He sensed more than just how the mana moved and used it in their attack. Something was different in their mana, different than the one he had. Their mana gave the impression of ferocity and untamedness. That was a weird sensation from the beast’s mana, as if they were alive and controllable. However, he saw how the two beasts controlled their mana well.

That made him wonder whether there were many types of mana. If that was the case, he was curious what type of mana it was. A lot of things popped into his head, but his focus was on how the two beasts did what they did.

The curiosity got him as he observed the fight longer instead of assisting the beast. His focus was on the beast, not the kobolds. He was trying to get the details on how the beasts were doing it.

The two beasts’ tail attack was without doubt powerful, but that was not enough to finish the Elite Kobold Fighter off in one attack. The Elite Kobolds would cover each other when their comrades were down.

Despite having the destructive power and the speed that the Elite Kobold Fighters could not match, the kobold managed to wear down the two beasts.

Red realized that the Kobold was not countering the beasts because they wanted to wear the beasts down. They kept throwing the Kobold Hunter and Kobold Warrior onto two big beasts.

Half an hour passed after he decided to observe the fight. The two slithering beasts only managed to kill two Elite Kobold Fighters. There were still twenty-four Elite Kobold Fighters alive.

At the same time, the two big beasts received wounds from the Elite Kobold Fighters’ counterattack. The Elite Kobold Fighters started to fight back. A small chunk of their scales broke or got peeled off, revealing the flesh underneath.

It was just minor injuries, but they were accumulating on their bodies. The kobolds just needed to be patient, and they might be able to take the two beasts down.

"Watching time is over..." He muttered as his grip on the spear got tighter.

"How are they doing it again?"

Red recalled what he sensed and then controlled his mana. This was his first attempt to release his mana out of his body without using a skill.

He recalled the sensation when he used Fireball, guiding the mana through the same channel as when he used the skill through his hand. It was easier than he expected. He knew why that was the case. It was one of his skills, Mana Authority.

Ever since he got the skill, his control over his mana improved tremendously. It was not just control, but also improved his Mana Sense. He was more sensitive toward mana. That was why he sensed the two beasts’ mana.

The mana left through his right hand where he gripped the spear. He was so focused as he tried to coat the whole spear with his mana. That was when he realized that he drew too little mana. He was using the same mana to activate Fireball, but that was not enough to cover the whole spear.

His mana only covered one-third of the spear, and it was only covering the shaft. He was about to draw mana, but that caused him to lose control over the mana that was out already. He sensed that the mana slowly dispersed because of his lack of control.

Red quickly focused back on the mana on the spear as he tried to stabilize the mana. That was much harder than he thought. Once the balance broke, it was hard to stabilize it again. He quickly guided the mana, moving it to the spearhead.

Since he could not cover the whole spear, just the spearhead should be enough. He didn’t forget to shape the mana like a blade; the edge was sharp. The moment it settled down, he quickly moved into action.

He stood up and threw it at one of the Elite Kobold Fighters. He quickly noticed the improvement. The spear was faster than usual. It was so fast that the Elite Kobold Fighter could not react to it.

Some of them managed to turn their heads toward the rustling noise. The moment they turned around, the spear had already hit one of them. The spear went through the head and struck the ground, not far off the beast. The spear hit the center of the kobold’s head and came out from the middle of its forehead.

Red could hear the faint sound of the skull cracking, which was followed by a loud thud echo as the kobold fell. That was right; he managed to kill the Elite Kobold Fighter in one shot.

He contemplated his last shot, realizing that it didn’t just pierce the power, but it also increased the speed and accuracy. The spear was clearly much faster, but the accuracy was just a guess.

It was a successful first attempt. As he marveled at his own success, he realized all eyes were on him. Not exactly on him, but they were looking in the same direction as he was.

He quickly moved and changed his positioning. The kobolds were still staring at the same spot, but the two beasts were following his movement briefly. That was when he realized that the beasts could sense him, but he was relieved that they were not able to follow him.

Even though he was on the same side as the beasts for now. There was no guarantee the beasts would not attack him later on. It was better to steer away from the beasts.

Red got into his new position, holding the last spear in his hand. This time he doubled the mana, sixty mana. He fully focused on his mana and coated the spear. Even then, sixty mana was not enough to cover the whole spear. It only managed to cover a third of the spear.

This time everything was under control. The man was not dispersing like before, fully stuck to the spear. He didn’t forget to shape his mana, sharpening the edge of mana.

Then he looked up at his target. He was aiming at the kobold that was standing in a line.

The two big beasts took the opportunity he provided. While the Elite Kobold Fighters were distracted when they found out their comrade died, the two slithering beasts attacked.

The beast with a blade-like tail swung its tail, landing a clean cut to the Elite Kobold Fighter’s neck. The head flew off as the blood spurted out like a small fountain.

Meanwhile, the bigger beast grabbed one of the Elite Kobold Fighters. It caught the kobold with the tail, coiling around the big kobold. The bone-cracking noise echoed as blood flowed out of its nose, mouth, and ears. At the same time, its scream filled the jungle.

Five Elite Kobold Fighters down, twenty-one remained. The remaining twenty-one quickly got their focus back on the two beasts. At the same time, they ordered the Kobold Archer and Kobold Hunter to look for whoever threw the spear. They sent underlings to take care of their hidden enemy.

Red was in his position; his target was set. Five kobolds stood in one line, and he was curious if his spear could reach the fifth kobold. He made his short run before throwing the spear with all his strength.

Fwoosh!

The spear accelerated through the air, creating sound as it flew. The only ones who noticed the incoming spear were the two beasts. The two heads turned toward the incoming spear and followed it.

The spear pierced the first Elite Kobold Fighter’s neck. Red missed his shot as he aimed for the side of the head. That might be proof that adding mana into the spear didn’t increase his accuracy.

The spear went through to the neck and hit the second kobold in the waist. He thought the spear would be stuck inside the second Elite Kobold Fighter’s belly with how big their body was. To his surprise, the spear reached the third kobold, piercing through the third kobold’s thigh.

Half of the spear went through the thigh, stuck there. Two kobolds hissed in pain as the first kobold gurgled in blood.

Again, the two beasts didn’t miss their chance. The moment the kobolds were distracted, the two beasts blurred as each of them snatched the Elite Kobold Fighter with their mouth.

Their movements were too fast as their heads turned into a blur, and each had half-swallowed an Elite Kobold Fighter. They didn’t intend to swallow them, as the two beasts kept slamming the two kobolds to the ground.

The black armor that Red deemed to be sturdy and the best one he had found so far broke apart. The kobold’s legs snapped as the bones could be seen. They spat out the two kobolds, and the kobold with the blade-like tail struck the kobold’s head with its tail, killing them.
