Red was amazed by the discovery. It was like learning a new skill, but it was not. He was just utilizing his skill differently. He usually used Mana Authority to adjust the mana usage on his skills, whether when he was doing something with his equipment or shooting a fireball.
Those were only two occasions where he used Mana Authority to adjust his mana. Now he realized that he could use mana to empower his attack. Mana Authority helped him with his mana control. He would not be able to pull it off without Mana Authority.
"That means I can use it on my arrow too..."
This was a big discovery for Red. It meant he could empower his arrow as well, and that might be enough to pierce that black armor. Not just the arrow; he could use the same method on his sword. Maybe he could even use it on his fist or body.
"And maybe I can cover my whole body with mana as armor too..." He discovered the potential behind mana applications.
"Using my mana is too ambitious... I don’t think I have enough mana to maintain the mana armor yet."
He snapped out of his distracted thoughts of the possibilities of his mana applications. He heard the angry hissing sound, but that was not from the kobold. Both kobolds and the beasts were hissing, but there was a distinct difference between the two.
He could not recognize that it was not from the kobold because he had been hearing a lot of kobolds in the last week.
The parents were angry because one of their babies was hurt. An arrow was stuck in one of the baby beasts. That enraged the two massive beasts. That caused the two beasts to go into a frenzy as the bigger slithering beast charged forward, leaving the baby beast behind.
He could see the Kobold Archer and Kobold Hunters were targeting the baby beast. Their plan was obvious. They tried to lure the beasts by angering them. While the beasts were spent, the kobold had no way to subdue the two beasts. Separating them from each other was the effective way to break the deadlock.
That plan worked as the Elite Kobold Fighters split up, letting the bigger beast charge forward toward their backline. They were sacrificing the Kobold Hunter and Kobold Archer. Once the bigger beast was separated, they quickly formed a line, separating the two parents.
He realized that he must help the beast fighting the kobolds before it was too late. These kobolds were smarter than the ones he fought in the village. Those kobolds fought the same way as the goblins, sacrificing their weaker kobold.
They were still sacrificing the weaker kobolds, but they were using them with a plan, not just a selfish or pointless sacrifice. They might be able to kill or even capture even after losing almost half of their Elite Kobold Fighters.
Red pulled an arrow and squatted on his knee. He pulled thirty mana from his reserve, coating the arrow with his mana. He had to split his focus between aiming his shot and controlling his mana. The mana was dispersing as he hastily released his arrow.
The arrow blurred, accelerating quicker than usual. The arrow hit one of the Elite Kobold Fighters’ backs. As he expected, the arrow pierced through the armor, the flesh, and the chest.
It was far from enough to kill one Elite Kobold Fighter, but that should be enough to weaken it. While it was less fatal than his spear, he could shoot more arrows than spears.
By the time the first arrow hit the target, the second arrow was already in his bow. This time he changed the sequence. Earlier, he aimed and coated the arrow with mana at the same time. This time he drew the arrow and aimed at his target first before releasing his mana to coat his arrow with it.
That was more efficient and effective. The mana was not unstable and dispersing like the first one. He released the arrow, and it shot even faster this time. The arrow went into a blur and struck the Elite Kobold Fighter’s head. He aimed at the same target, going for the kill.
The arrow pierced through the head. He had seen the kobold survive with a spear in their head. He thought that was not enough to kill the Elite Kobold Fighter as he pulled the third arrow.
The third arrow was nocked on the bow, targeting the same kobold. Before he finished coating the third arrow with mana, he saw the Elite Kobold Fighter fall.
That surprised him for a moment, but he didn’t think about it much at the moment. He took it as luck was on his side to kill the Elite Kobold Fighter with two arrows.
He moved to the second target. That was the Elite Kobold Fighter, whose neck was pierced by his mana-coated spear. Even though it was bleeding profusely from the hole in its neck. It endured it and still tried to fight the beast in that condition.
At this point, the kobolds took the gamble, do or die. They decided to ignore him entirely, focusing on the beasts. That gave him even more freedom as he shot the third arrow. His third arrow hit the head and killed the injured Elite Kobold Fighter. It fell to the side with a loud thud.
Even though the kobold ignored him, he still changed his position after the third shot. He moved away, finding a new position and sniped the Elite Kobold Fighter.
He was being ignored, but the fight between the kobolds and the beasts got fiercer. At this point, the kobolds no longer tried to capture the beasts. They were trying to kill it. The kobolds focused their main fighter on the isolated bigger beast.
Red did his best to help; arrow after arrow was shot, reducing the number of the Elite Kobold Fighters one by one. At the same time, the bigger beast accumulated more wounds.
Red used the beast to snipe the kobolds one by one. With his newly discovered way of using mana, he could kill the Elite Kobold Fighter from a safe distance.
He managed to corner the kobolds as they fell one by one. At the last moment, the kobolds threw their bodies to kill that one bigger beast. It was a mutual-destruction fight as their desperate attempt to kill the beast succeeded.
The kobold managed to kill the bigger-sized slithering beast. The blade sword pierced the beast’s head, pinning it down to the ground before four more swords followed.
The moment they killed the beast, the last remaining five Elite Kobold Fighters spread out and tried to run. Red chased after two Elite Kobold Fighters, killing them before they could run.
Once the Elite Kobold Fighters decided to run, the weaker kobolds also spread out to flee. The fight was over. The kobolds suffered big casualties, and the baby beasts lost one of their parents.
The slithering beast brought their children to its dead mate, nudging the unmoving beast with its snout. Red heard a voice that was close to whining.
Red was surprised that the beast could have such emotion. They were more emotional than goblins, without a doubt. That was what surprised him.
He decided to show himself, jumping off the tree. He didn’t know if it was a good decision because the slithering beast snapped toward him. He wanted to get his deserved loot, and he needed to get it in a hurry because he needed to follow the fleeing kobolds after.
The moment the slithering beast snapped toward him, Red quickly pulled an arrow and drew his bow, aiming at the beast. He expected the beast to attack him in anger. Yet that was not the case.
The beast stared at him intensely, yet it did nothing, remaining on the spot. They stared at each other for a while.
In Red’s mind, he would run the moment the beast decided to attack him. He was ready to use Burst Leap to create distance and escape afterward. To his surprise, the beast didn’t attack him.
The last parent took three dead bodies of the Elite Kobold Fighters. Those three bodies were skewered onto its tail and brought with it. The three baby beasts followed their parents closely, leaving Red alone.
He was once more surprised by the beast’s behavior. The beasts seemed to know his contribution to killing the kobolds. Maybe that was why it didn’t attack him in anger even though it was grieving, losing its mate.
Red didn’t move from his spot, his eyes locked on the beast that left. He needed to make sure it was far before thinking of looting. He didn’t want to be ambushed by such a scary and large creature.
Red only relaxed once the beasts were out of his sight. A sigh of relief escaped his mouth. However, the relief turned into ecstasy as he saw how many bodies of the Elite Kobold Fighters were left behind. On top of that, there was the dead beast with an unknown level. This might be the biggest harvest in his life.
