{Wave 5 Has Been Cleared} 80 percent enemy casualties inflicted

{Good Job Heroes of Marimgar!

๑(◕‿◕)๑

Since the seventh day is a day of rest, I won’t give you another wave! Instead, you get a super cool bonus reward at the end of today’s battle!

Now, fight hard, and don’t let the drakes eat you.}

Kalli sighed as she read the System message, and ran her fingers through her tangled hair. That was going to be a nightmare to deal with later, but a bad hair day was the least of her worries.

With a fresh wave on them now, and all the others down to under twenty percent of their original force, Marimgar was in a decent situation, compared to what it could have been.

Only, they were quickly coming up on noon, and their heroes were showing all the signs of extreme fatigue, with the worst wave of the Trial already on them.

The mages threw up barriers over the line as the first drakes poured gouts of fire over the battle lines before being cut down by heavy weapons fire. The sky was filled with fire, blood, and plasma explosions, while black clouds blocked out the suns.

"Oh, the gods are being kind to us. We get to fight in the shade," Sinn laughed as he prepared to take out one of the last Cyclops warriors still not at the city walls.

The other members of the flight team laughed. Things were grim, and the drakes were aggressively targeting them, so they didn’t dare to get too far from each other. But the job was almost done, and now they just had to drop the last barriers, so that the ground forces could do their jobs.

Once these last few Cyclops monsters were dead, the flight team could land and keep fighting from the ground, where they would burn less mana.

The battle had already begun to shift, with the few remaining enemies getting too close to the walls for the heavy weapons platforms to target, so the trucks had turned their guns upward, spraying energy blasts into the sky at the drakes.

The beasts weren’t particularly adept at dodging, but hitting moving targets flying an evasive pattern wasn’t an easy task to begin with.

So, it was only adding to the chaos in the skies, and making flight even more dangerous for the defenders.

"Get back to the base we can take care of it from the ground. The gunfire is too much. Someone message Kalli and ask if there is a flak option for the Pulse Cannons. We need airbursts if we’re going to really deal with the drakes.

They’re too difficult to hit, even with targeting sensors."

Kalli saw the message come through, but there was nothing in the System that indicated the settings on the guns could be altered, and there was nothing like an "Airburst Mode" switch on the pulse cannons.

That simply wasn’t what they were designed to do.

However, twenty trucks firing strings of energy pulses into the sky combined with explosions of the air defence guns to make Marimgar look like a scene from an old war movie, with tracers and flak filling the sky.

The only part that didn’t belong in a historical scene were the drakes.

Huge gouts of fire burst from their bodies as the beasts dove at the heroes, and black wings twisted through complex patterns that no human built aircraft could ever have hoped to accomplish.

The drakes attacked in waves, being careful not to cluster into too large of a group, as it would make them a target for the big guns.

Two and three at a time, the beasts dove toward the ground, met by the furious defence of the heroes, leaving scaled bodies littered over the outer city, and charred armour on hundreds of heroes who hadn’t managed to fully block the attacks with a skill.

The mages were doing their best, and even the tanks had joined in, using [Guard] and other shield skills to block the flames.

But there was only so much they could do.

Fortunately for the heroes, the composite battle armour was fire-resistant, and even when they were scorched, the armour didn’t burn or melt to their skin.

"Coordinator! We need more light suits. Can I get a truckload?" A runner gasped as she ran inside the hall of heroes.

"On it. I’ll send you with the light suits and a stack of heavy ones as well. I know most of the warriors have power armour now, but there are some who can’t use it. Take these helmets too. The head is important, and these have built in oxygen, so the heroes don’t suffocate if they’re doused in dragon fire."

If it was long enough to worry about oxygen, they also had to worry about death, but the advanced helmet would help with the ash and protect the head and face.

Points well spent.

Another truck was sent right after the first, going in the other direction so that the heroes could get their gear replaced more quickly. Once the battle was over, the newly arrived heroes with trade skills, and the tinkers, were going to be very busy trying to get everyone’s gear back into working condition.

But the cost of sending out spare gear was much lower than the cost of losing heroes.

Even one level lost was a disaster for a hero at this level, as they needed more work, and higher danger levels with every progression.

The same was true for Kalli, in a way.

She progressed with quest turn in rewards, so either she needed more heroes, or higher level quests to keep progressing at the same rate.

Luckily, she had both at the moment.

The Epic Grade completion quests were down to just one final wave of drakes, and a few random monsters. Once those were finished, they might actually be able to unlock more good things for the town of Marimgar.

Hopefully something that would improve their general quality of life, instead of needing to turn the city into a militarized fortress that was entirely focused on survival.

Survival was necessary, obviously. But if that was all that they were doing, they weren’t really winning the trials, they were only enduring them, and endurance was limited.
