Pulse Cannons tore through drake wings, and the monsters began falling out of the sky as the gunners learned the best techniques for targeting fast moving flying monsters.

You didn’t have to kill them in the sky, you should shred their wings, ruin their mobility, and then you could finish them.

Either as they fell, or after they crashed.

It was brutal, bloody, and even after they crashed, the drakes were incredibly deadly. The only difference was that they were clawing and breathing fire at ground level, instead of from above.

It wasn’t a huge improvement. But it did make the warrior class heroes feel a bit more like "Heroes" since they were fighting something that could vaguely be called dragons, while wielding swords and wearing armour.

[Guard] deflected drake fire around their shields, while the groups encircled the scaled monsters. It was a great exercise of teamwork, as they also had to watch out for reinforcements, and attempts by the drakes to douse the rest of the group in fire.

The battle was turning into a chaotic melee, and the Rogues were grounded for safety, but the number of enemies was dropping fast.

With the gunners constantly cycling through, or having their teammates feed them mana so they could fire constantly, the drakes didn’t stand any real chance of breaching the city.

Especially with all the new buildings and their automated laser turrets.

They didn’t have massive destructive power, but every time a drake tried to dive for the air defence guns, a dozen or more lasers would turn on it and blast the creature out of the sky.

Then, they would shoot it while it was on the ground, just for good measure.

In that way, the buildings made the city much safer, as they would kill any monsters that were found on the ground so that they couldn’t sneak up on anyone who was going about their business.

As long as they were in the residential area of the city, the people were relatively safe from another incident like the Goblin attacks.

But mostly they were all hiding inside the first two towers, as they didn’t dare to come out and explore what Kalli had done with the rest of the city when it might put them at risk and draw resources away from the battles at the wall.

They had perfectly good windows, they could see that there were many new buildings in the city, and they didn’t see any monsters. But nobody wanted to be the cause of an incident when things were already dangerous, and there were giant lizards in the sky.

That, and the fear that the dive bombings might roast them, should one of the drakes get past the bombardment.

As the number of drakes began to dwindle, Kalli checked the clock.

11:18, they still had three quarters of an hour left until the first twelve-hour timer was up, and who knew how much longer until it would decide that they had failed to complete all the waves they had gotten.

Not that she expected it to take away the monsters. More likely, they would just fail to get the reward for the wave.

That wasn’t a huge loss, especially when they were clearly so far ahead of the curve when it came to clearing the monster waves. But it would be painful to the heroes if they missed out on a quest completion and one of the good mystery boxes.

Actually, that was a thought.

Kalli opened the store to her least used tab, and checked what she could get for mystery boxes.

She hadn’t checked them in quite some time, but perhaps she could get something new?

Instead, she ended up staring at an essentially blank section.

[ Odd, that mystery box doesn’t have a grade on it. I thought that I might be able to upgrade them so that I could pick rare grade rewards, or even buy an Epic Grade mystery box while we were doing Epic Grade quests.

But it looks like they are completely random. ]

That might not be a bad thing, but at ten points a box, she was likely to end up with a lot of common grade items that may or may not be useful to anyone.

Still, if she bought a bunch of them, she might get lucky.

"Seriously? One a day? I really should have bought one of these earlier and found that out."

Curious what it was going to give her, Kalli opened the Mystery Box for the day, and a massage chair appeared behind the counter.

"Hmm, not bad. The System really does know what a girl needs."

When the next runners entered the room, Kalli was in a state of near Karmic bliss as the rollers of the massage chair worked all the knots and stiffness out of her back and neck.

"Just let me know what you need, I’m not getting up."

"The usual. I’ll grab them from the stack. I was just wondering where you went, the chair is lower than the counter," the boy laughed.

With the screen still clearly in her line of sight, Kalli watched the camera feeds cycle as the last of the monsters at the walls were repelled, and the heroes could finally turn their attention fully to the drakes.

The lack of monsters at the walls let the turrets freely target the drakes, with terrifying accuracy.

The monsters were not easy to kill, with their durable scales that tended to take the brunt of the laser blasts. But the shots were getting through, even though the automated turrets aimed for the central torso, to ensure that they did not miss.

It was part of their programming, and there was neither time nor any easy method to explain the concept of flying monster to a targeting code that thought they were a form of vehicle.

So, it didn’t target the wings, as the wings of a flying vehicle could take many more hits than the cockpit area without causing the vehicle to crash.
