Dozens of heroes pushed forward to speak to Kalli, as they all had life skill related classes that would benefit the town once they could get resources to work with. Some of them were simple, like cooks and tailors. Others were a bit more complex, and they hadn’t managed to fully utilize their skills in the past.

However, the ones who had managed to survive the first trial were all adept at finding ways to be useful.

"I’ve got pottery as a skill, but one of the abilities that I can use is [Advanced Ceramics], so I can make and repair that advanced composite armour.

I can also create armour plating to upgrade the vehicles," the young man insisted.

"Well, that’s definitely an unexpected bonus. Alright, we will need to get you a larger workshop on the ground floor. It shouldn’t be a problem to get you set up for bay doors to drive vehicles in and out.

But I suspect that most of your work is going to be in repairing composite armour because there are thousands of sets to do, and not nearly enough workers for it.

How many others do we have that can run armour and weapon shops?"

A handful of heroes stepped forward, and Kalli breathed a sigh of relief.

"Good, we do have a half decent repair team. I will spread you out in smaller groups because so many jobs require two sets of hands. Then, the other heroes won’t have to walk as far to get their gear repaired.

Who else has a skill that we’re going to need right away?"

"A bunch of us are Alchemists. We’ve been working in the Kitchen and the bars, but if Marimgar has enough magical plants, we might be able to make proper healing potions and such."

"That would be cool. I don’t know if we do have them, but we can try. There are some seeded fruits and other things that might grow in the food section of the store, so we can start growing new species of plants.

However, they’ll need some time to mature, unless they’re like the Tubers.

So, your first batches of potions will be fairly limited."

The Alchemists shrugged. It was worth experimenting anyhow. If they could come up with something better than the mugs of soup, it would help everyone. But just the fact that the thermoses of thin tuber soup worked so well gave them hope that many of the new plants might have special properties.

One of the Alchemists shrugged. "It’s fine. We can take a few days to try to work with what we have, in case it produces results before the next attack.

Every bit counts."

Kalli nodded. "Then Alchemy shops will be added.

What else do we have that we’re going to be able to make use of now?"

"Well, they’re not as cool as some of the other skills, but I ran a custom boot factory before. I don’t have a System Skill for it, but I can do shoe repairs and such," one of the female mages offered.

"Good enough for me. Boots might not be a full armour suit, but repairs are repairs. All the shops that aren’t urgent or trial related, just put down a note, and I will get you settled once the critical infrastructure is in place.

There are plenty of shop spaces for everyone, and once we defeat the trials, we will have a properly modern urban area.

A bit more dense than most, but that’s how we roll these days.

Now, let’s get things moving, so we can get the city cleaned before it starts to stink."

The heroes laughed, and the line to turn in quests moved quickly through the hall of heroes as Kalli began to add even more warehouses, buildings, and weapons emplacements to the city, burning through the incoming points.

Then it occurred to Kalli that the larger Arks had only taken a minimal part in the trials. Their heroes might have been manning the guns inside the Arks, but they might be short on points still.

The defensive guns had certainly earned each of the heroes the wave completions and at least a few completions of the kill quest, but they might not have gotten the wall defence or any of the other quests completed.

There was only one way to find out, and that was to message the Fleet Admiral.

But with so many of her own heroes to assist, there was no time to be worrying about that. Instead, Kalli focused on the small details. Things like adding solar panels to the buildings with flat roofs, and adding additional energy storage buildings so that they had a backup supply of power for all the additional {Air Defence Battery} Emplacements that she had added.

The generator couldn’t possibly feed them all, but with the energy storage, they had a few hours of high intensity city defence before they would have to cut the output.

Eventually, Kalli simply decided that additional power storage in every building that had an air defence battery was going to have to be the way that it went. 100 megawatt hours per building. Enough for one constant hour of maximum draw, or about three hours of practical use of the defensive weapons.

With that change, they would also have very little worry about power outages while the city was not under attack. Even if they happened to be using a huge amount of power to do something, the backup storage would be able to handle the surge.

The idea was that their solar and the power plant could keep the storage full and slow the drain during combat.

An amusing thought came to Kalli’s mind as she finished putting the assortment of residential buildings, future factories, and even entire towers dedicated to agriculture around the city.

Now that they had enough firepower to challenge anything short of an orbital fleet, plus sufficient advanced hydroponic growth space to feed not just their own people, but the entire Kalkan Fleet’s civilian population, what were the chances that the next trial was going to be something completely outlandish?
