Ethan felt a little disturbed in his heart. Not because the task had been failed and he was unable to receive the reward.
Instead, it was because of the task itself.
’I failed to protect Nora...’
There was a surge of anger, but it was quickly dispersed. Actually, he couldn’t blame himself. The task had been vague, and he hadn’t known what could endanger his family.
This was why he had been reluctant to meet up with Lucas while leaving his family behind. Still, he felt a little confused.
’The system tasked me to protect Nora... from asthma? How?’
The weather wasn’t cold, so it obviously wasn’t that. Something else must have actively triggered the asthma. A factor that could have been prevented.
His gaze slowly shifted to Cassie. "You were with Nora when she started having difficulty breathing, right?"
Cassie stiffened, then nodded. "Yes. We were talking about mermaids, but she suddenly started gasping. I was really scared."
Ethan nodded and fell silent. ’They were discussing mermaids? Hmm, that doesn’t seem suspicious...’
He kept his thoughts to himself. Soon, the door opened and the doctor stepped out with the nurses pushing Nora’s bed.
"We’re moving her to a private room so you can stay with her occasionally," The doctor explained, smiling at Ethan and Evelyn.
The couple immediately felt more relieved.
"How is she...?" Evelyn asked hesitantly.
The doctor turned to her and answered, "She’s currently asleep because of the injection we gave her, but she should wake up soon."
Evelyn was once again relieved and thanked the man.
Ethan then proceeded to ask, "Have you discovered what could have caused it?"
The doctor answered, "Not exactly, but we figured it could be food she consumed."
Ethan frowned. "Could it be the steak? That shouldn’t be a problem, no?"
The doctor shook his head. "Probably not. But it depends on each person. That might have triggered it for her."
Evelyn blinked in realization and turned to her friend. "Cassie, what snack did you bring for Nora earlier?"
The black-haired lady froze. "A-Ah? It was just a peanut-chocolate bar. We ate it together."
Evelyn’s expression changed. "Peanut? I thought I told you Nora has peanut allergy!"
Cassie flinched and shrank back. "I-I didn’t know, okay? I really didn’t. If I knew, I would have brought something else."
Her eyes immediately teared up, and she looked like she would cry.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, but he said nothing.
Evelyn’s expression softened, and she sighed. "Sorry for shouting at you like that. I was just stressed."
Cassie immediately shook her head. "No, I was in the wrong. I shouldn’t have fed Nora that. So stupid of me."
Evelyn sighed again and turned away without saying anything. She couldn’t deny that she felt extremely angry towards Cassie. After all, her daughter had been in danger because of a snack.
However, she also couldn’t blame Cassie. It was possible that she had forgotten about Nora’s allergy.
The doctor smiled bitterly. "Looks like the peanut allergy triggered it. That’s really bad luck. I’m sorry for the expenses."
Ethan rolled his eyes. "As if you’re going to refund us. Let’s just forget about it. As long as she’s fine, all is good."
The doctor laughed. "Mr. Hale surely knows how to jest. Regardless, your daughter is fine now. By tomorrow, she’ll be discharged."
Ethan nodded and held Evelyn’s hand. "Let’s go stay with her until she wakes up."
The lady agreed, then said to her friend. "Cassie... you go home. Thanks for your help. But you should rest."
Cassie knew she was trying to politely send her away, so she didn’t argue.
"Once again, I’m sorry, Eve. I... I didn’t know. I’ll make it up to you guys someday."
She immediately turned around and ran, muffled sobs escaping her lips.
Evelyn’s heart wavered, and she turned to Ethan. "Was I... too harsh on her?"
He shook his head and hugged her. "No, it’s fine. That’s honestly the calmest response you could have given her."
"Mn," Evelyn hummed and pulled away from him. "Let’s go see our daughter."
Ethan followed behind her. ’Yeah. Our daughter...’
Meanwhile, Cassie immediately dropped her pretense as soon as she stepped out of the hospital. A scowl appeared on her lips, and she gritted her teeth in anger.
"Damnit! She’s just so annoying. First, Chris is head-over-heels for her and now Ethan is actually a rich guy too? Why is she the only one getting the good guys?!"
She walked down the street, grabbing her hair in frustration as she dialed a number.
Soon, the call connected and she spoke immediately. "I’m frustrated. Let’s fuck."
......
An hour later, Nora’s eyes finally fluttered open. She saw the white ceiling above her, heard the steady beeping of the machine next to her, and immediately knew she was in the hospital.
’How did I get here? Ah... the asthma. So annoying...’
"Nora?"
Hearing her mother’s voice filled with love and care, she turned towards her. A weak smile bloomed on her cute face.
"Mommy..."
Evelyn reached out and held Nora’s hand while Ethan stood behind her. "Thank God, you’re okay."
Nora glanced at Ethan, then nodded. "I’m fine. It’s gone now, and I can breathe much better."
Evelyn was relieved to hear this. "Yeah. The doctor said it’s because of the peanut-chocolate bar you had. Don’t eat something like that again, okay? Even if I’m the one who gave you."
Nora nodded slowly, a look of realization on her face. Inwardly, though, she was fuming.
’That woman... She did it intentionally. So she’s finally making her move. Good. I’ll make sure to tear you properly. And you too...’
Her gaze shifted to Ethan, and he immediately felt that something was wrong. Was that... hatred in her eyes?
’???’ He shook his head. ’No, I must be imagining it. Or maybe she remembered the horrible things the original Ethan used to do and got angry.’
Still, he felt a little uneasy.
Realizing that she might have acted out of character, she immediately tried to cover it up.
Pouting, she said to Ethan. "Dad, you must let me watch a cartoon tonight or I won’t forgive you!"
Ethan tilted his head, confused. "When did I offend you?"
"Hmph! I won’t tell," She snorted and turned away, seemingly displeased.
Ethan felt a little perplexed, but still agreed. "Alright, alright. I’ll let you watch a cartoon."
Evelyn laughed lightly, smiling as she watched her husband and daughter interact.
’Phew, that was close,’ Nora sighed inwardly. ’I can’t let this cunning man sense anything wrong. Never.’
