Repairing A Broken Home With My Patriarch System
Chapter 36: I Am Changing?Ethan and Evelyn stayed with Nora all through the night, and thanks to the doctor’s hospitality, they were even given a bed to sleep.
The next morning, Nora was discharged after undergoing some check-ups, and they could finally return home.
They boarded a taxi that took them back to their neighborhood, and they finally arrived at their house.
Ethan opened the door and led them in before closing it behind them.
"Felt like we traveled for weeks..." He laughed lightly, carrying Nora in his arms.
The little girl hugged him and shyly buried her face in his neck.
"Ethan, let me cook today, okay? I don’t want my skills to rust," Evelyn said as she immediately slid into the kitchen after changing her clothes.
Ethan nodded and followed her inside while carrying Nora. "How about I teach you a new recipe?"
The woman paused and looked at him with wide eyes. "Teach me? Ethan, is there a meal you can cook that I don’t know about?"
He nodded confidently. "Of course, there is. Countless, even."
He helped Nora sit on the kitchen table, then turned to his wife. "What do you say? Do you want to be tutored?"
Evelyn shrugged. "Alright, let’s do it."
Like that, Ethan began to instruct her on how to prepare a basic French dish that wasn’t too complicated. Besides, they had all the ingredients, so it was easy to make.
Nora watched their interaction with a curious look in her eyes. Her thoughts, however, remained unknown.
Still, she smiled whenever Ethan made Evelyn laugh, showing two cute dimples on her face.
Soon, Evelyn finished preparing the crêpes under Ethan’s guidance, and she was amazed.
"It really looks good!" She exclaimed with a happy smile.
Ethan smiled too, though his attention was somewhere else.
[Hidden Task—Teach your wife how to cook—completed!]
[You have received: Increased Cooking Comprehension for Evelyn Hale. Claim reward?]
It had been a while since he had completed a hidden task, with this being the second. Besides, this was the first time he was seeing this kind of reward, and he was a little surprised.
’So the rewards aren’t only for myself but for my family too?’
With a faint smile, he claimed the reward while looking at Evelyn closely. Nothing seemed to change about her, but she suddenly looked at the crêpes she prepared with narrowed eyes.
"This thing is actually simple to make. Why was I so confused earlier?"
Ethan smiled and ruffled her hair. "Of course, it’s solely because I already taught you. I’m a good teacher, after all."
Evelyn laughed and carried the plates. "Let’s eat quickly. We still have to go to the shop today."
Ethan assisted her, thinking, ’She’ll be needing assistants soon. When we move, I’ll arrange that too.’
The family of three quickly had their breakfast, bathed, changed clothes, and headed back to the shop.
Just like they had been doing, Ethan manned the other shop while Evelyn stayed at the original one. Nora stayed with Ethan this time, reading a new book he had bought for her.
’She’ll be enrolling into school soon, so I should help improve her reading comprehension too,’ Ethan thought as he passed a basket of apples to a couple and watched them go.
Feeling his phone vibrate in his pocket, he took it out and checked.
It was a call from his father—Jason. He didn’t hesitate and answered immediately.
"Hey, old man. I thought you’d forgotten me!"
A snort sounded from the other side, and his father replied grumpily. "Stop calling me old man. I’m just 59."
Ethan nodded. "Actually, that’s true. We’re age mates so we can talk to each other freely."
"Brat, you’ve grown an extra pair of balls, haven’t you? Good, good. I’ll squash them when you come here," The man replied with a sinister undertone in his voice.
Ethan—including the mighty Victor Caldwell within him—trembled slightly.
"Father, I’m just joking, alright? I was actually thinking of visiting you guys soon. When do you want me to come?"
He held the phone between his shoulder and his ear as he began to attend to the next customer.
Jason pondered about it for a while, then said, "How about next week? And... bring your family too. It has been a while."
Ethan hummed. "Alright. I’ll bring them along. Ah, that’s 20 bucks. Yes, thank you."
He waved to the customer before grabbing his phone and putting the money into his waist purse.
"Who are you talking to?" Jason asked grumpily. "Are you at the bar again? You brat...!"
Ethan quickly stopped him and explained, "Wait, wait, wait! It’s not that. I have really stopped going to the bar, old man. Believe me."
Jason growled through the phone. "Didn’t I tell you not to call me old man?"
"Ah, sorry, sorry," Ethan said, suppressing a mischievous chuckle. "I’m really not at the bar."
"Then where are you?" Jason asked.
Ethan placed the phone between his shoulder and his ear as he attended to another customer.
"I’m helping Evelyn at her shop. She has two shops now, and she can’t divide herself into two people."
The phone went silent, and when he started thinking the call had been disconnected, Jason spoke again.
"Brat... are you being serious right now?"
Ethan nodded. "Of course, I am. Sigh. Old man, you should learn to trust your son, shouldn’t you?"
Jason didn’t even bother reacting to being called ’old man’ again. He was feeling confused and surprised.
"You’re really... helping her? What got into you?"
Ethan smiled and answered, "People change, I guess."
Before Jason could speak any further, he said, "Old man, I’ve heard enough of your voice today. Pass the phone to my mother, please."
"You brat..." The man sighed. "Serena is asleep. Don’t disturb her. Anyway, I want to see you and your family next week. Don’t you dare disappoint me."
"Understood, General Jason," Ethan joked and hurriedly ended the call.
He looked at his phone and smiled.
’This life is really different from my old one. It feels like I’ve changed entirely.’
