As the concentrated Death Energy from the hundred death-demon cores entered Maximilian’s body, his Soulforce rose rapidly, the veins throughout his body turning black.
He continued consuming until every vein in his body had blackened.
His hands moved in a rapid series of hand signs, merging his Soulforce with the Root of Eternal Tree. To connect his consciousness with the cosmos, the Root of Eternal Tree acted as a medium. However, it required a tremendous amount of energy to form the connection. The excess Death Energy that was about to explode his body was rapidly consumed as it connected him with the cosmos.
In the next moment, Maximilian found himself standing in the endless cosmos. Countless stars covered the black blanket as far as he could see. Galaxies were forming on one side while colliding and merging on the other. Both formation and destruction were occurring at the same time.
"Th-this is the true Cosmos," Maximilian murmured, mesmerized by the scenery before him.
The dragons of his era had long forgotten the true meaning of reaching the Celestial Realm. They would climb the highest mountain on Vyoman to get closer to space and cultivate there, trying to understand the movement of the sun, moon, planets, and stars.
After spending centuries learning stellar motion, they would form their own concept from what they had understood. Once the concept was successfully formed, they would enter the Celestial Realm.
However, this method of cultivation was shallow and incomplete. Forget centuries, even if one were to spend millennia learning the constellations, there was only so much they could learn by looking at the sky. Although this method allowed the Dragons to reach the Celestial Realm, their cultivation foundation became shallow, and their chances of further Ascension were significantly reduced. Only one dragon, Maximilian’s father, was able to ascend further, thanks to his generational talent that overcame the limitations of this cultivation technique.
Perhaps the successors of Arcturus came up with this method because they no longer possessed the Root of Eternal Tree to connect their consciousness with the Celestia.
"Connecting with the cosmos is only the first step," Maximilian reminded himself, turning his focus back to the endless space before him. "I need to form my concept."
In the real world, his hands formed another series of hand signs. The Celestial Marrow crystal broke into tiny particles and entered his chest through the golden gem.
Maximilian’s consciousness drifted through the cosmos, witnessing clouds of dust giving birth to planets in one place while witnessing their destruction in another. Some stars radiated with the brilliance of life, while others were dark, shrouded in death.
Although each of these events would take billions, if not trillions, of years to occur, the Celestial Marrow he had absorbed helped him witness these events at an incredibly accelerated rate. Yet none of them piqued Maximilian’s interest. He could not feel himself connected to any of them.
After five years of unceasing exploration, Maximilian finally found something that captured his attention.
"Incredible," he murmured, standing before a gigantic dark sphere.
Golden light curved around its boundaries, forming a brilliant halo against the darkness of the cosmos. Yet, beyond that boundary, there was absolute abyss. Even light itself vanished the moment it crossed into it.
Its gravitational pull stretched across the surrounding void, dragging everything toward its center. Asteroids broke apart and disappeared into the darkness. Planets were slowly pulled from their orbits, their surfaces cracking as they were swallowed whole. Even distant stars were dragged toward the same endless abyss.
It devoured everything in its path, its greed knowing no bounds.
"A black hole," Maximilian said, finding himself drawn to this devouring abyss. "There cannot be a more befitting concept than this for the dragon of death."
He sat cross-legged before it and began understanding its principles.
Ten years later...
"Thanks to the Celestial Marrow, I was able to witness the birth and expansion of the Black Hole," Maximilian spoke to himself. "As for its end, I’m afraid that the effects of the marrow will wear off before I can witness it. I’m not sure that I can witness its end even if I use the remaining Celestial Marrows. I couldn’t see inside it either. My Divine Sense isn’t strong enough to witness what is actually happening inside the hole. If I tried to forcefully peek inside, my consciousness would be shattered.
"To step into the Celestial Realm, one must form their concept. For millennia, dragons in Vyoman have been forming their concepts using constellations. However, it only leads to a very weak foundation since they don’t even understand a drop of the vastness this cosmos carries. Still, even one percent of understanding is enough to reach the Celestial Realm. Five percent is enough to form a proper foundation. Ten percent is what ensures that a cultivator has a chance to break through to the next realm. But that will be their limit. My father must have reached this level of understanding even without the materials that helped me. From the teachings Arcturus had left in the chamber, he had reached twenty percent understanding of his concept when he reached the Celestial Realm.
As for me... I have probably comprehended around thirty percent of the mysteries I witnessed."
Maximilian’s eyes slowly opened, revealing dark corneas filled with countless tiny particles, resembling the cosmos itself. His irises had taken the shape of a pair of holes, with a halo of golden light surrounding them, exactly like the black hole before him.
He expanded his arms, enclosing the view of the black hole between his claws. As he moved them closer, the void above and below the black hole shattered, and a pair of gigantic dragon claws, even larger than the black hole itself, emerged from within.
The claws drew closer, clasping the black hole within. Maximilian moved his arms even closer, his fingers trembling. The dragon claws followed his movement, compressing the black hole.
The arms continued compressing it until it was reduced to a small sphere, the size of a palm.
Maximilian beckoned at the compressed ball, calling it toward him. Once it drew closer, he grabbed it, opened his mouth wide, and swallowed the ball.
The black hole he swallowed was not the true celestial body. It was the manifestation of his understanding of it, condensed into a tangible form. To complete the formation of his concept, Maximilian needed to make that understanding completely his own.
He needed to devour it.
The moment it entered inside him, something unexpected happened in the real world.
