Wyatt
Getting used to this body—-to my mate’s body, was easier this time around. We’d chosen to swap places, not forced like before. Still, with Guy’s new wings and tail, his strength amazed me.
Who knew digging beneath dirt, concrete and steel was easy for a dragon?
I hated letting him go in first, letting him wake up in the hellish position beneath Rhea but I trusted him. Me, trusting another man not just with my life but with my wife too.
I wish I’d done that long before now.
Waiting for the signal, I tunneled beneath Themis and broke through the ground, grasping her ankles. Though she squealed like a pig, I pulled her body under until only her chest and head were visible.
But my real goal was also achieved—-her scales had fallen into the earth below us, meaning she's basically depowered. Depowered for now, at least.
“No…” she said with the tiniest hint of relief behind that frown. Themis didn’t seem disappointed, and she certainly wasn’t screaming like Rhea.
Maybe she wanted this on some level. Of the group, I usually felt Mnemosyne and Themis were there for the ride but they had no real personal reason to be in this fight. Which meant fear kept them here.
But they’re fearing the wrong person.
“I’m over here too by the way! You know, just in case you forgot I’m still in your body.” Guy groaned on the floor. I chuckled softly as I walked over and picked him up gently.
“Sorry about that. Here, we should swap back. Noa and I have been apart long enough.”
With a weak nod, Guy and I closed our eyes and entered our shared mindspace. It was as simple as walking from one side of the mind to the other. Just like that, we were back in our bodies.
I was mentally prepared to feel the pain of entering my body in its wounded state but moving my hands felt like stepping on glass. Every bone felt broken, all my skin felt tender like I was bruised.
“Shit! Did you let her turn you into an accordion? "
Guy scoffed and dusted off his body.
"No but next time I'll let them take a little longer with your body before we swap. Since you like to get beat up and all.”
“Now I never said that. Don't go putting words in my mouth.”
I groaned as my body slowly started to heal each bone snapped back into place like a jigsaw piece and it was excruciating.
Guy smirked at me, I could tell he wanted to say something else but he quickly frowned and shook his head.
“Let's just kick Rhea’s ass and get the hell out of here before the other one shows up.”
“Sure you go on ahead.” I stood up, walked over to Noa and placed my hand on his head. In a surge of light we were connected again and all felt whole once more.
“It's about time you freed me.” Noa rumbled in my head. “I was starting to think you liked being her plaything.”
“You know we can separate again. I can just leave your ass out here.” He quickly grew silent after that and shuffled to the back of my head.
I wouldn't be in the front for long. Noa could see my memories as soon as we reconnected, he knew I had to take the lead on this one.
Unfortunately Guy did not.
“Guy, go ahead I'll catch up.” He raised a curious brow at me and paused.
“What do you mean you'll catch up?We're supposed to do this together.”
I sighed and adjusted the glasses that weren't there any longer.
“Guy, I have to do this next part by myself.”
“Why?”
He crossed his arms and waited for my answer, an answer he probably already knew but he just needed to hear me say it.
“I have to kill her.”
The words came out smoothly, as if they had always been meant to be said at that place and time.
Guys arms dropped to his sides. I was surprised that instead of a look of disgust on his face; he seemed to understand. His eyes were calm, his mouth was set, and he nodded just once.
“Just tell me this: what are you going to tell Sapph?”
There it is.
I shook my head and cracked my neck on both sides.
“The same thing I've told her since we were children; I did what was necessary.”
Guy shook his head, “that's not enough. If you're going to take a life, you need to tell her. This isn't like when you shot Valeria. As far as we know Rhea is just one person, one soul.”
I grit my teeth and clenched my fists, trying to rein myself back in.
“Yes, she's one soul and one life that decided to do heinous things to both me and the image of my wife.”
Guy nodded like he understood, as if he had lived through that hell, but he never would understand. Still, when he walked over and shared the same space with me, breathed in sync with me—I knew he only had the best of intentions. I didn't want to take out this anger, this burning hatred on him, but it had to be let out.
“If you're going to do this,” Guy started with warmth in his eyes,”I'm not going to stop you. But I won't lie for you either. I know what type of man you are, and I'm still here, anyway.”
Something about him saying that he's still here, that he chooses me, broke just a little piece of the iceberg around my heart. Too bad it's going to freeze right back over when I lay eyes on Rhea.
Let's go. I didn't wait for a guy to follow me as I headed back out into the hallway. I couldn't hear Rhea screaming for help any longer.
I cursed and prayed to whoever listened that she would still be in that room for me to finish what we started. When I turned that corner my breathing stopped, she was still there curled up in a ball in the middle of the room but there was one problem.
She was surrounded by ankle deep water and that water was moving towards us.
