“I hope you weren't expecting a little water to stop me!” I yelled out, eager to taste her blood on my tongue. However, I wasn’t that foolish yet.
“Water means Tethys is nearby.” Noa commented from the back of my mind.
“No shit, Sherlock.”
“Keep that same energy when your ass is drowning and you come hollering for me.”
I have been rather short with him lately but who could blame after Rhea’s torture? Noa would, like any good brother, he wouldn't let me get away with anything.
The water rushed towards us but Guy wrapped an arm around my waist and lifted me into the air, massive blue wings gently holding us aloft.
Any other time, I might just lean into that embrace.
The water below us rose up and formed a sort of snake-like form, complete with an open jaw and hissing tongue. It lunged at us but Guy maneuvered out of the way, flipping over it and around it. It almost felt like he’d done this before.
Great, a water snake is trying to kill us and I’m no closer to wrapping my hands around Rhea’s throat!
Think, Wy, shove the revenge fantasy aside for a minute and use that big brain. Scanning the area did nothing, it was far too dark down here and that water was murky—meaning anyone or anything could be hiding within it.
I took a deep breath and used my nose to cover what my eyes were failing to see. Top left of the room, downwind, a strong scent of chlorine and unknown sex fluids. Meaning it's not Rhea, so it’s probably Tethys.
Only one way to find out.
Just to double check for safety, I kicked off my shoe into the water. No electricity, no piranhas either. She probably wouldn’t waste any time unless it was one of us directly. But since it’s not hazardous to step in…
“Guy, get ready to dive-bomb towards Rhea.” I whispered.
“Really?! You want to dive into the big water snake guarding her? Water is unforgiving, you know!”
“I know. I just need you to trust me. Do you trust me, Guy?”
Only a slight hesitation, I’ve earned that no doubt.
“Yes.”
“Then on the count of three, dive-bomb and no matter what happens, do not change course or slow down.”
I could hear his scowl, “I know what a dive-bomb is!” But I didn’t miss that little encouraging squeeze on my waist. Or the swift kiss on the base of my neck.
“One…two…” Guy drew in a sharp breath behind me as he flipped over the snake one last time, “three!”
He soared up as high as he could and tucked in his wings, flying right down towards Rhea. Her pet snake opened its jaws to catch him but gravity was on his side. The second the snake closed its jaws around him, I teleported, not on top of Rhea but onto the one hiding in the water.
“There you are!” I exclaimed, letting Noa take over with claws extended. He dug in his nails to a shocked Tethys. Just like I suspected, with such power, there's no way she’d be too far away. She would have to be around to see and control her monstrosity.
But finding her and beating her were two different outcomes and neither would be easy.
Tethys locked eyes with me. I thought I was going crazy because for a brief moment, she had green ones and zeroes in her eyes just like Barbie and Valeria. Another extension of Barbie or is this the main body?
Who cares?
The water swirled around her protectively, leaving Rhea all alone.
“Damn you mutt!” Tethys called out, forming a watery body of armor around herself. “I didn’t want to have to kill you—not until we had Rupert first!”
“Funny.” Noa barked out a laugh, “like we would ever let you take our boy to begin with!”
That cold acidic feeling came back kicking and screaming in my chest. Talk about the absolute worst case of acid reflux I’ve ever had. Every growl that tried to come out, came as a burp instead.
How unprofessional
“Ew.” Tethys upper lip curled up in disgust and then into a vicious grin. “Don’t worry though, you won’t worry about all that once you’re dead!”
“Not planning on dying—urrrrp—today lady!” Another obnoxious burp. Guy came up behind me with a childlike wonder in his eyes.
“Oh…by the goddess I think I know what’s happening here. You’re about to have your first spit!”
“Big man, I love the enthusiasm but I’ve been spitting longer than—” he quickly cut Noa off.
“No, not that kind of spit—here, let me help you.” I started sweating when spinning blades of water began forming around us.
“Guy!” Guy locked his arms around our lower midsection, like he was about to perform the heimlach maneuver.
“What the hell are you two doing? Hugging? In the middle of a fight?” Tethys hissed, sending the blades my way, “oh, you two are just begging for me to kill you!”
“Not quite!” Guy called out over my shoulder. That awful reflux came back even stronger this time and when it did, Guy did the unthinkable.
He pressed on my gut, forcing me to throw up. Except it wasn’t an empty stomach acid, no it was a torrent of blue sludge. There was so much that I felt more like a fire hydrant than a man.
Well, man-wolf-dragon thing…you get the point.
Wait. Dragon? Oh goddess, don’t tell me this is my—
“Whoa! Check out your dragon spit!” Guy was such a cheerleader, he almost made the situation bearable.
“I really don’t want to.” Noa answered but we looked anyway. “What the hell?”
Any place the blue sludge hit, the water froze. Everything in that room was frozen like a tv dinner. Including Rhea and Tethys.
“Haha! Look at that! My man’s a slush dragon! I love it!” Annoying but bearable. I fought the smile on my lips and turned towards the women, squinting at what I saw.
“Are you sure about the slush part?”
“Yeah, why?” Guy scratched the top of his head not quite getting it until he heard the sizzle and pops I was looking at. I’d frozen everything alright, but it wasn’t staying frozen.
It was melting.
“Because last time I checked, slush didn’t mean acidic.”
