Sapphyra
I whistled and checked a freckle on my wrist, happily wasting time while the others started panicking.
“Man, I wish I’d gone to space to get this freckle removed…” I mused out loud before shrugging, “oh well. Say, you guys still waiting on backup or did you wanna duke this out already? I got nothing but time.”
Mnemosyne stepped back cautiously but she remained in my sights. Theia’s hands balled into fists but she didn’t move. I made sure to look her in the eye with as much pity as I could spare.
“If you had just come to me, I could have gotten whatever medicine Rupert was holding for your father. Theia, I could have helped you—I still can, you just have to let me.” Am I still pissed off at her for being part of this entire thing? Yes. Do I still care enough to offer help? Sadly also yes.
I’m definitely a glutton for punishment at this point.
A bitter laugh escaped Theia though her eyes were wet with unshed tears.
“Why on earth would you bother helping me after all I’ve done? Are you insane?”
“A little bit, yeah, probably.” I scratch the back of my head and sigh. “Look, I’m not Rupert. And though I can never really trust you again, I still don’t want your father to suffer unnecessarily…I might be a janitor or a custodian or whatever now but I used to be a superhero.”
My toothy grin made both women blush, “superheroes save people. It’s kinda the golden rule, ya know?”
Mnemosyne’s upper lip trembled and she quickly hid her face from me with her book. I could hear the sniffling behind those pages. Theia was no better. She tried to grit her teeth and bare it but the tears shed soon after.
I could smell their emotions, the poison in their hearts that they desperately wanted to clean up. Well, good thing they’ve got a janitor here to take care of them.
“Superheroes also believe in redemption. Why else do you think Wyatt’s still in my life?”
Aside from the fact that we’ve built a life together forever. Redemption is totally a reason on that list, yep.
Don’t look at me like that.
“I’m afraid.” Mnemosyne choked out, quickly wiping her face. “Barbie’s plans…all her memories, they’re so evil. But she doesn’t believe that they are.”
Now why does that sound so familiar?
“Let me guess, she thinks she’s just helping? Doing it for the greater good.”
“How did you know?” I chuckled and shrugged.
“Call it pattern recognition.” If there’s one thing Wyatt has taught me, it's that the road to hell is definitely paved with good intentions.
I was going to carry on further but a sharp voice called out to me from below us.
“Sapph!”
“Guy?” I answered, watching him fly over to me. His face was flushed, his eyes were wild.
“You need to come down here before Wyatt does something we all might regret.”
I narrowed my eyes on Guy. On instinct I checked to see if Wyatt was behind him, of course not.
“Wasn’t the whole plan for you to free him?”
“Yeah, mission accomplished.” Guy gently tugged on my arm, “but then things got out of hand and now people are melting like ice cream down there!”
“Melting like…what?!” I let him drag me for a few feet but I turned back to Theia and Mnemosyne with a longing look.
“We’ll be here when you get back.” Mnemosyne said quietly. I beamed brightly at her and she turned away with a blush. Theia rolled her eyes at Mnemosyne but nodded and shrugged.
“Not like we’ve got anywhere else to go.”
“I’m gonna hold you to that, Mnny!”
“M-m-Mnny?!” She cracked open her book and hid her face in it, twisting her hips back and forth. I laughed quietly, enjoying just a moment of peace before I had to face whatever the hell this was up ahead.
“Mind telling me what that was about?” Guy quietly asked as we flew down.
“That was diplomacy in action.”
“Hmph.” He scoffed, “looked a lot more like you were flirting with the enemy…and my aunt, for goddess’ sake.”
Shit. I really wasn’t…not on purpose at least.
“Yell at me after?” I offered. Guy just huffed and puffed out of his nose like the big bad wolf.
“I’ll never yell at you, angel. But I will quietly shame your beautiful ass.”
“I absolutely do not deserve you.” He smiled, kissing my cheek as we landed in front of the blue slushie covered room.
I could see my breath, that’s cold. But it also felt hot? Not enough to bother me but I could definitely feel it. Oh…the room was melting. Guy was right, the walls and floor were slowly but visibly sinking in. This slushie sludge whatever was doing it.
And Rhea and Tethys were in the middle of the room, melting into the ground, with Wyatt standing over them.
I tried to ignore the inhuman groans pouring out of their mouths. It felt like I was listening to them scream in slow motion but something occurred to me: shouldn’t they be healing? I mean, unless Iapetus was around, they absolutely should be healing.
Something around their wrists caught my eye. It was too long to fit just one wrist, a necklace maybe? It was bound around both Rhea and Tethys wrists and its smell nearly lulled me to sleep.
Dragonsbane. Holy shit.
“Wyatt…did you put—”
“Yes he did.” Noa’s gruff voice answered me.
A ball of dread rolled around in my belly like snakes as the horror of what he’d done settled into my bones.
“So you’re just…watching them get eaten alive?”
I tried not to look into Rhea’s eyes but I couldn’t help it. They were clouded over, filled with pink and black—just like my signature flames. Wait…did I do that?
“Sapph, you don’t know what she did to him. It felt like days but it was only a few hours, I know.” Noa’s hands clenched but his whole body vibrated with emotion I couldn’t quite place.
“They tortured him, goddess.” His voice came out choked and strained.
“Oh…oh Noa, Wyatt, I’m here.” I walked over to them, heart wide open. I tried placing a hand on their shoulder but for once, when I reached for them? My hand only touched empty air.
Noa had teleported a few feet away from me, looking me dead in the eyes.
“They tortured him…and they used his love for you to do it.”
