Wyatt moved away from my touch. I could hardly believe it.

He never does that, not to me.

But Noa said they’d used me to torture him. I’m scared to think about what that means yet I know we can’t move forward until we do.

“Wyatt…please talk to me.” I whisper, keeping my eyes on Rhea and Tethys. Tethys eyes glitch with neon green ones and zeroes, just like Barbie and Valeria. Fuck, I should have known it wouldn’t end with those two.

Just how many people were really just pieces of Barbie anyway?

“You don’t want to talk to him right now, goddess, trust me. He’s colder than Antarctica right now.”

“Maybe but I need to know what they did to him.” I gulp, pushing through my apprehension. Wyatt needs me to be there for him. How many times has he been there for me?

I can’t count that high.

“It’s not my place to tell you.” Noa sighed, running his fingers through his curly hair.

“Wyatt, come out and talk to me. If you’re going to watch people get cooked alive, at least have the decency to tell me why.” I used my “stern” tone, the one he hated for me to use. I wouldn’t have to use it if he’d just come out and talk to me.

“Sapph.” He teleported beside me, stealing my breath. His eyes turned into the warm amber I’d always known them to be yet he wouldn’t fully meet my gaze. I’d never seen him like this before. There was no pride or arrogance, no hate in his eyes.

He looked…numb.

“Rhea used you, Sapph.” His voice was beyond strained, he sounded like he’d already lost a battle.

“Okay but what does that mean?” I crossed my arms, heart thrumming against my chest.

“It means I failed, Sapph.” His shoulders drooped and he flinched at my touch when I reached out again. “They took the one thing I’ve tried to protect my entire life and used it against me.”

“Wyatt, you’re not making any sense! What did she do? Did she make an illusion of me?”

“Yes.” Wyatt closed his eyes, breathing deeply.

That should have been apparent considering I fought another me when I arrived here.

When he didn’t explain any further, the pitt of dread in my belly began to expand. It went into my throat, making it impossible to swallow. I couldn’t fathom it…as fucked up as Rhea had been about using our son against us, I never thought she would use me to hurt Wyatt.

“She raped an illusion of you. In front of me. For hours upon hours. You know how real her illusions can feel. Your pregnancy is evidence of that.” Each sentence was followed by a single hot angry tear. I wanted to wipe his face dry, kiss his pain away like he’d done for me so many times before.

Wyatt let out a shaky breath before he finished.

“And when she was bored of hurting you, she hurt me too.” He tilted his head back and gazed up above us. “I went someplace else then, that one was easier to disassociate from. But seeing you—hearing you make those sounds? The same sounds that were just for me on our wedding night?”

Oh my god, Wyatt. My heart broke, it broke and there was nothing I could do to take away what she’d done. It fucking figures that the one time I try to move without thinking about him, something truly evil like this happens.

He shook his head, lips curling down in disgust as he watched Rhea bubble away into a pile of nothing.

“It just proved that I was right. I should have protected you more, should have—-”

“Wyatt, honey, that wasn’t me.” I gently reminded him. “It wasn’t real. None of it.”

“I fucking know that! You don’t think I don’t know that, Sapph? Huh?” He hit his chest and turned away from me, screaming like his soul was getting ripped out. I’d never seen him so primal.

“That’s not what I’m saying.” Guy wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest.

“Let him get it out. All we can do is be there for him right now.” I knew that…I’m just not used to keeping my hands off of him when either one of us is in distress. Touch was our love language and right now it feels like I’m speaking in tongues.

“Everytime I look at you, all I see is your image being used over and over.” By now Wyatt was pacing back and forth, hands clenched by his sides. “Your voice, your touch…Sapph it’s all poison to me right now.”

He stopped and turned towards me, teeth gritted in anguish as another short scream ripped from him. He kicked over a half melted chunk of wall, smashing it into smithereens.

“And there’s nothing I can do about it right now.” A bitter laugh broke out from him, dark and chilling. “Oh how ironic it is. The object of my obsession is now my personal hell.” Wyatt shrugged his shoulders and teleported into the doorway.

“It serves me right, I suppose. I knew karma would finally catch up to me.”

“Wyatt, wait! Don’t go!” I struggled in Guy’s grasp, trying to break loose and follow Wyatt. Wyatt glanced at me over his shoulder, the darkness in his eyes softening just for me.

“I’m sorry. But I guess I’m breaking that promise to never leave you after all.”

I wailed in agony as he vanished from my sight, teleporting to places unknown. Wherever he went, I could barely feel him. Like a sting pulled taut, if he moved anymore, I think our connection would break. Our mate bond.

“Guy…why didn’t our mate bond work for Wyatt? Why didn’t it help fix what was wrong? Even if it was just temporary. It should have done something…right?”

Guy’s head hung low. He took far too long to answer.

“It can help soothe but Sapph,” Guy gently grasped my shoulders making sure I would hear him loud and clear, “there are some things that are too broken to be fixed, even with our bond.”
