Guy
I was helpless in this body. I had to watch him drag her away by the throat but all I could do was scream her name. No dragon or superhero strength and no supergenius brain. Guess I’m winning most useless boyfriend of the year.
Dammit Wyatt!
I wish right now that he actually was a werewolf—maybe then I could actually do something. My legs pushed past the breaking point as I leapt up the stairs and out of Beacon headquarters. Can’t see em’ but I can hear their fight above me.
I stopped moving once my feet started sloshing around in the mucky water.
“Shit! What am I supposed to do now?”
That's when I heard it.
At first I thought it was thunder, maybe a storm was coming. But no, it was so much worse than that.
Hyperion had his fist in Sapphyra’s gut, holding her by the hair. She didn’t make a sound but her face was locked into a horrific scream.
With a malicious grin, he swung her body around in a circle and sent her headfirst into a building. It exploded on impact, raining pink smoke and fire all around. The fire got swallowed up by streams of rising water nearby.
Wait, rising water?
Oceanus and Tethys! My aunt and uncle, thank the goddess they were on our side now. I could see them nearby, hands raised as they commanded the water to clear out any debris and flame.
I was already on my way when Oceanus put an arm across Tethy’s stomach, holding her back.
“We cannot interfere.” I heard him say. “Hyperion demands a fair one on one duel.”
Yeah I bet he does.
With clenched fists I searched for Sapph's body. My breath caught in my throat when a puddle of rubble started moving to my right.
Sapphyra
“You need to run away” were the first words out of my mouth—right after I spit out a pile of soggy rocks.
Gross.
I couldn’t see Guy just yet but I knew he was there, like I could sense him searching for me.
“I’m not leaving you.” He grasped my hand, helping me pull myself free from the rubble.
“You aren’t leaving, you’re just getting to a safe distance.” My nose itched, I could smell the protest coming from a mile away.
“Sapphyra, he’ll kill you—” I glared at him, then slowly smiled. Ouch. Smiling hurts—everything hurts like hell but I can't let him know that.
“Oh ye of little faith—” Hyperion grabbed me by the throat again. I am so getting sick of this shit. Am I really that rusty?
“Taking a break? Brainstorming with your little human pet?” Pet? Funny, I’m pretty sure that’s how Wyatt sees me nowadays.
“Plotting how to…” I didn’t finish, I just needed the opportunity to spit in his eye. When he didn’t flinch, my stomach dropped. Come on, not even a fucking frown?!
“Pity. And here I thought you had at least a shred of dignity. Seems these creatures…and traitors, “ he casts an annoyed glance at Oceanus and Tethys before turning back to me, “took even that from you.”
“Heh.” It hurts to laugh. I have to think of something fast or I’m so screwed. “I got dignity coming out of my ass. You should take a good look.”
My arms were heavy, I barely had enough strength to scratch at his wrist. He tightened his grip, disdain heavy on his face. I could feel his fingers digging into my skin.
“Pathetic.” He’s right. But nobody calls me that…nobody but me of course!
Purification Breath shot from my void into his face. It pushed him back, made him release me but it didn’t do any real damage. He’s stronger, or at least sturdier than Rupert.
One use out of five down.
“Bah! Annoyances like these aren’t worth my time. Frankly you aren’t worth my time. All that talk about you being the world's greatest hero or villain or whatever—it was all lies.”
Hyperion rushed me but he was nowhere near as fast as Guys superspeed, especially now that I knew when to look for him. I brought my arm up, blocking him from grabbing me again.
What I didn’t count on was him ducking behind me and grabbing me by the wings. The fire that burned down my spine from the intense pain would haunt me forever. A dragon’s wings are the most sensitive part of them—its where a special set of nerve endings are.
I grit my teeth, letting the tears flow as we flew up into the orange clouds again. My belly rumbled, like something was churning inside me.
That's happened before, the first time I refurbished Penny's house.
“I’ll make this as quick as possible.” Hyperion said oh so graciously.
“Go fuck yourself !” I bit back, holding my guts. Something was wrong with my void. Was it all the blueprints and materials I’d sucked up yesterday? No. It’s like my body was changing something inside me from one thing to another.
Recycle. Is it activating on its own? No. It wants me to use it! I have no idea what material I’d make. The only thing that can hurt a dragon or even slow them down is…
Dragonsbane.
It’s a long shot but what have I got to lose at this point?
Hyperion stopped moving. He held me by my wings, a hurt bird for him to set free. I faced him and kept my composure as long as I could.
“Any last words?” He yawned.
This motherfucker was bored? About to drop me from a few thousand feet in the air and he needed a nap? Oh…oh he’s earned this ass whooping.
“Yeah, I got one: open your mouth and say ahh.”
He gave me the predictable ‘what-the-fuck’ look.
“You asked for my last words—you don't get to judge ‘em.” I crossed my arms. Hyperion's slow sigh gave me just the time I needed to recycle something into Dragonsbane.
Good thing I used to mix it with my alcohol when I wanted to get drunk. Human alcohol alone doesn't affect dragons.
“Fine. I'll complete your oddly specific request…ahh.”
“Recycle!”
He never saw it coming. For good measure—and just because I didn't like him—I didn't just spit the Dragonsbane into his open mouth, I hawked a fucking loogie of it down his throat.
Hyperion's eyes widened, he let go of my wings. His movements were slow now. He draws his arm back for a punch and I grab his arm, pulling him in close.
“Wha…what are you d…doing?” His cheeks and nose darkened as the Dragonsbane took effect.
I wrapped my arms, legs and wings around him. We were locked together. Hyperion burped in my face, luckily I moved to the side.
We were descending. Nah that's too clean a word, plummeting.
“Let go. You'll die too.” He mumbled into my shoulder, barely awake.
“Mm, true. Or ,and hear me out, I can save us both. All you gotta do is yield.”
“Why?!” He choked out. The ground was getting closer. We probably had 30 seconds left. Even though my body was screaming and my heart was beating out my chest.
“Why? ‘Cus I'm not Rupert. Now yield or kiss the ground big guy!”
Just as we passed the top of a skyscraper, he opened his mouth.
