"Guide Ambrose?"

Ambrose skidded to an abrupt pause the second he got to the Hunters and Elves.

His forehead wrinkled. "Oh," he took a couple of seconds to catch his breath, which was really hard with the debris and dust being hurtled around. "You... know who I am?"

Trinity nodded. "Yeah, actually." She turned to the others who were all blinking at Ambrose with confusion. "Y’all remember him, right? The C-Rank Guide who went into the Echo Rift with Hunter Gabriel and the others."

The Earth Esper was the first to have a flash of recognition. "Oh, right... wait." His brows knitted. "Wasn’t he also popular like a week or two ago because he quit that S-Rank American Guild?"

"P-Phoenix Flight?"

"Yeah!"

"How the heck did a C-Rank Guide get in here?"

"Maybe he..."

Ambrose spaced out for a moment.

’Fuck me sideways!’ he groaned mentally. ’So much for being discreet.’

[I mean, at least this means you’re a celebrity to some powerful Hunters.]

’More like a suicidal idiot. Wait—these guys realise there’s a world-ending battle behind us, right?’

Meanwhile, the Elves stood at the side, exasperated by how calm the humans were. They’ve all been very tense... until this new human walked to them.

"I appreciate the recognition and all." Ambrose finally put a stop to the talking. "But can someone explain to me what’s going on? What Federation are you affiliated with?"

"... Canada," Trinity answered. "Yeah, we were each picked from some of the top S-Rank Guilds in the country."

That made Ambrose sigh with relief.

At least they weren’t from a Federation outside the continent.

"So can you please explain what the heck is going on?" He continued with more questions. "What’s... What’s that thing fighting the Void Entity? Why’s that Rift purple? A-And why haven’t you guys gotten the hell outta here already?"

"The more important question should be WHY you’re all still out here."

A melodious and yet agitated voice chimed through the chaos like a bell cutting across thunder, drawing every eye toward a sudden cascade of ethereal light that pierced the swirling debris and dust clouds overhead.

From within that radiant beam, shimmering with hues of emerald and starlit silver, materialised the Elven Queen herself, her flowing robes of living vines and luminous silk billowing.

She hovered just above the fractured ground, her eyes narrowing as she regarded the cluster of humans and her own kin with a gaze that spoke volumes of both concern and exasperation.

"My Queen." The Elven Princess lowered her head immediately, followed by every elf present.

The Queen scarcely acknowledged them, her attention remaining fixed on Trinity and the Hunters.

"I specifically granted your request," She said, the disappointment in her tone almost tangible. "I allowed my daughter to accompany you back here because you wished to see your loved ones again before the end." Her brows knitted. "So why have none of you crossed over?"

Silence lingered for only a heartbeat before Trinity forced herself to answer. "We... tried."

The Queen’s expression shifted.

"One of us touched the Rift first," the Canadian captain continued, swallowing hard as Corbin’s final scream echoed vividly inside her head. "The moment he made contact with it... It was like something inside the Rift grabbed him."

Another Hunter clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles whitened. "It tore him apart."

The Elven Queen’s pupils constricted.

"There wasn’t even a body left," Trinity whispered. "He was just... gone."

A heavy silence followed those words.

The Queen slowly turned toward the pulsating Purple Rift, a troubled light surfacing within her emerald eyes.

"I see."

Besides Trinity, Ambrose blinked several times before rubbing a palm across his face.

"Wait," he muttered. "Hold on a second."

Everyone’s attention drifted toward him.

"You’re telling me..." His throat suddenly felt dry. "We’re trapped?"

[Not you.] Aura’s response came so suddenly that Ambrose nearly jumped.

’...Excuse me?’

[You possess both the Black Mask and the Black Key. They are dimensional artefacts far beyond the capabilities of ordinary teleportation.]

Ambrose’s relief lasted all of two seconds.

’Except I literally used them trying to get back to Earth,’ his thoughts came faster now. ’And somehow ended up here instead.’

Aura fell unusually quiet.

[...That is correct.]

’So why?’

Even the AI hesitated.

[I do not know.]

That answer unsettled him far more than if she’d made something up.

[However...] another notification flickered before his eyes. [Based on available evidence, it appears increasingly likely that the Black Key did not malfunction.]

[It intentionally brought you here.]

Before Ambrose could process what that truly meant, the Elven Queen’s gaze drifted beyond them toward the apocalyptic battle raging across the ruined city.

The Void Entity drifted through collapsing towers like a cosmic nightmare given form, rivers of absolute darkness spiralling around it. Opposite it, the Devourer continued forcing itself upward from beneath the world’s crust, every movement splitting entire sections of the city apart.

"One possesses the authority to erase," the Queen murmured, watching tendrils of darkness devour entire structures. "The other exists only to consume."

Her elegant fingers slowly curled into a fist.

"If this battle continues," sorrow flashed across her features, "there will be no world left to save."

Nobody spoke.

Even the Hunters could only stare.

"We cannot overpower either of them," she continued. "The only hope would be to somehow distract them... isolate them... And then lure them somewhere far away from this realm before they destroy it entirely."

Isolation.

The single word exploded inside Ambrose’s mind.

Those silver eyes slowly widened.

His hand instinctively slipped into his pocket, fingertips brushing against the smooth surface of the Black Key.

Aura immediately caught on.

[No.]

A tiny smile spread across Ambrose’s face.

"...Yes."

[Sweetheart, that idea is beyond reckless. Even if you open another dimensional passage, how exactly do you intend to force two extinction-level entities through it?]

His smile faltered. ’I’ll figure that part out later.’

[That is not a plan.]

’No,’ Ambrose admitted, drawing a slow breath before lifting his eyes toward the Elven Queen. ’But it’s a start.’

Aura remained silent for several long seconds before speaking again.

[If you reveal what that key truly is... these people will realise you possess something capable of traversing entire universes.]

Ambrose’s grip around the key tightened.

’If putting that secret on the table means the Void Entity dies for good this time...’ He exhaled slowly before stepping toward the Elven Queen. ’...I’m willing to take that gamble.’

"Your Majesty," he called, earning the attention of every elf and Hunter present alike. "I... think I might have a way to separate them."
