Luo Jingheng averted his gaze. He had been trapped here for so long he’d almost forgotten what the outside world looked like.
’Twenty-four years, and it’s still not enough? How greedy.’
As Luo Jingheng stood up, his foot suddenly hit something. He glanced down. It was the medicine bottle from that night.
He bent over, picked it up, and tossed it into a nearby trash can. A sudden thought struck him: it would be a shame to just die like this.
"I’m going to C City."
Du Kang could hardly believe his ears when he heard this.
Ever since coming of age, the young master had confined himself here, refusing to go anywhere. He hadn’t even stepped outside to see his father off when he’d left.
And now, he actually wanted to go to C City!
"Yes! I’ll go make the arrangements right away!" Du Kang felt a thrill of excitement. ’His father would be overjoyed if he knew.’
Luo Jingheng’s brow furrowed slightly. ’What does he have to do with it?’
「One day later.」
Wu Yonghui stared at the expedited paternity test in his hand.
"Th-this isn’t right. Master Li, you must have made a mistake. Jiang Li isn’t my daughter."
Li Tianming frowned as he looked at the paternity test report in Wu Yonghui’s hand.
"Mr. Wu, I am never mistaken. There was another girl with Jiang Li at the time. Could it be...?"
Wu Yonghui’s mind went to the other girl from that day, the one who had been so wary of him.
Thinking back now, Jiang Li had been completely calm throughout the encounter—in fact, there was even a hint of mockery in her demeanor.
"This won’t do. For Tongtong’s sake, I have to go to C City."
"Dad, what are you talking about?" Wu Tong asked as she walked in from outside, casting a puzzled glance at the person standing beside Wu Yonghui.
’Why is such a strange person with Dad?’
"Ah, it’s nothing, Tongtong. The paternity test results came back. Jiang Li isn’t your sister; I was mistaken.
I’m planning to go to the C City police department to see if they have any news about your sister."
Wu Yonghui tossed the report into the trash can, then had someone book plane tickets for himself and Li Tianming.
"Wait!" Wu Tong wanted to ask more, especially since she hadn’t even known she had a sister until now.
"Mom, why did you and Dad never tell me I had a sister? If I’d known, I would’ve kept an eye out for any news about her."
Hearing this, Wu Tong’s mother, Li Cuilan, couldn’t help but shudder.
She had actually felt a wave of relief when she learned the girl they’d met wasn’t her daughter.
"There was an accident back then. We all thought your sister was dead, so we never said anything."
Li Cuilan cut the conversation short with that one explanation, then stood and headed upstairs.
A scene from twenty-four years ago surfaced vividly in her mind.
She had been pregnant with twins. Wu Yonghui’s career was taking off, and he had become exceptionally superstitious during that period.
He’d hired someone to read their fortunes. The master had taken one look at her pregnant belly and proclaimed that one of the babies inside was a baleful star.
On the day of the birth, one baby was vigorous, her cries loud and strong. The other was frail and tiny, spending several days in an incubator and even receiving a critical condition notice.
Wu Yonghui grew even more convinced of the master’s words: if the scourge wasn’t removed, the Wu Family would never be able to prosper.
So, he had the master perform a ritual to swap the fates of his elder and younger daughters.
Seven days later, Tongtong’s condition improved, while the elder daughter’s face turned ashen, her breathing growing faint.
She watched, powerless, as her baby daughter stopped breathing.
She didn’t know what happened next. All she knew was that Wu Yonghui carried the baby out and returned to tell her he had found a grave for the child.
Back in her room, Li Cuilan was tormented. She didn’t want something like this to happen again, but what about her Tongtong!
...
Ever since returning to C City, Wu Ming had been plagued by nightmares. There was nothing in them—just a bottomless darkness and a suffocating pressure.
"Why don’t you sleep with me tonight?" Jiang Li said, stroking Wu Ming’s pale face. It had only been a few days, yet she looked completely worn out.
Wu Ming looked at Jiang Li, completely distraught. "I don’t know what’s wrong... Every night, I dream of this dark, oppressive place.
"I’m trapped inside, crying until I can’t breathe, and no one comes to save me. It’s such a horrible feeling."
As she spoke, Wu Ming leaned against Jiang Li’s shoulder with red-rimmed eyes, then forced a smile.
"My master said he’s rushing back in the next few days."
Jiang Li nodded. "It’s okay. Even if the sky falls, you’ve got us."
Moved, Wu Ming hugged her arm, and as she leaned against Jiang Li, she drifted off to sleep again.
Jiang Li gently laid her head down, then stood up. After a quick word with Yu Huannian, she headed out to buy something to help Wu Ming sleep.
Inside an aromatherapy shop at the mall, Jiang Li carefully read the product descriptions.
"Hello, what type of aromatherapy are you looking for?"
"For sleep."
"In that case, you might want to look at this one. We get great feedback on it."
Jiang Li glanced at the bottle the sales associate was holding, nodded, and paid.
Just as she left the store, Jiang Li faltered for a second before quickening her pace.
’These people cling like ghosts.’
In a nearby reflection, Jiang Li watched the people tailing her from a careful distance.
She looked down, placed the bottle in her bag, and turned to walk toward the fountain on the lower level.
The area around the fountain was crowded with people and pigeons.
Jiang Li got into her car and started driving back.
A moment later, a car shot out from behind her.
She gripped the steering wheel, slammed on the accelerator, and sped away, calling Ji Qinghe as she did.
Just then, a "Road Work Ahead" sign appeared.
Seeing the car closing in behind her, she veered left.
As the buildings around her grew sparse, she realized they had deliberately forced her down this route.
"Jiang Li, our people are on their way. Find a place to hide and be safe."
Jiang Li saw a car blocking the intersection ahead, the person in the driver’s seat staring right at her.
Jiang Li immediately threw open the door and jumped out. An instant later, her car was slammed into a mangled wreck.
She whirled around and sprinted down a side path.
"Chase her!"
Jiang Li glanced back at the men closing in on her—seven of them.
"You bitch, you got lucky running into the Luo Family’s young master last time. Let’s see you try and hide now."
"The boss said he wants her alive."
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. ’He wants me alive? That makes things simple.’
She pulled a knife from her bag and faced them, licking her lips.
"Hmph. You’re overestimating yourself," the leader sneered. ’Thinking she can take on all seven of us alone? In her dreams...’
Jiang Li never waited for her opponents to make the first move. Gripping her knife, she lunged forward, sinking the blade into one man’s thigh and dragging it upward.
"RRRIP!"
"AHHHHHHH!"
Jiang Li showed no mercy. A huge gash opened up on his leg, as if a side of pork had been sliced open.
"Fuck!" the others exclaimed in shock. She was more terrifying than they were.
With a backhand thrust, Jiang Li stabbed another, ripping the blade free in the same motion.
Screams soon echoed through the area. The five remaining men surrounded her, their hearts pounding with terror as they stared at her ferocious expression and the blood-drenched knife in her hand.
’She wasn’t human.’
The men exchanged a look and charged Jiang Li at once.
RRRIP!
SHNK!
In moments, bodies lay scattered around Jiang Li.
