Jiang Li silently averted her gaze, pretending she hadn’t seen a thing.
At the police station, Wu Yonghui tried to talk his way out of it, but with Wu Ming still in the hospital—and setting aside the matter of fate-swapping—this was clear-cut attempted murder.
"Wu Yonghui will be sentenced to ten years or more."
’Ten years or more?’
Jiang Li frowned. Accustomed to dealing out suspended death sentences and life imprisonment, a sentence of ten-plus years felt far too lenient.
’Then again, isn’t staying alive a form of suffering in itself?’
At that thought, Jiang Li’s mood instantly lifted.
Luo Jingheng watched as Jiang Li smiled like a criminal.
Jiang Li had just finished giving her statement when she received a call from the hospital.
"Oh, Jiang."
Cao Kun’s sobs came through the phone, making Jiang Li jump. "Master Cao, did something happen to Wu Ming?"
"You’ll understand when you get here. *Sob, sob...*"
The more she listened, the more panicked Jiang Li became. She, Yu Huannian, and Miao Anji hailed a cab and rushed to the hospital.
Du Kang stepped forward. "Young Master, are you going?"
Luo Jingheng shook his head. "No, let’s go back." He was tired.
Jiang Li sped to the hospital, pushed open the door to the room, and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Wu Ming sitting up in bed.
"Sister."
?
Jiang Li took a step forward and heard that soft, cute "Sister." Her gaze met Wu Ming’s clear and vacant eyes, and her brain short-circuited.
Before she could process what was happening, Wu Ming had already wrapped her in a tight hug.
"Master Cao, what on earth is wrong with Wu Ming?" Jiang Li asked, holding Wu Ming and looking at Cao Kun.
"Ah, this... this is soul loss." Cao Kun paced back and forth in the room, muttering things she couldn’t understand.
"So what do we do? Summon her soul back?"
Cao Kun opened his mouth, then looked at her with a troubled expression. "Normally, yes. But Wu Ming’s situation is special.
Forget it. Just watch her for me. I’ll be gone for a few days."
Jiang Li looked at Cao Kun earnestly. "Master Cao, there’s strength in numbers."
’What if we wait too long and Wu Ming is permanently damaged?’ She didn’t want to wait.
She could see that Master Cao was hiding something.
"Master Cao, just tell me what I need to do. I won’t ask why. How does that sound?"
Cao Kun sighed and glanced at Wu Ming.
Wu Ming met his gaze and called out happily, "Daddy?"
With red-rimmed eyes, Cao Kun turned his head away and said gruffly, "Who’s your daddy? I’m not worthy of being your father."
"Wu Ming... her name is a homophone for ’no life.’ Back then, to extend her life, I sought out a certain entity and arranged a marriage between them.
Only he can help find her soul, but that entity is incredibly fierce. I arranged the connection behind his back back then. I’m worried this will backfire spectacularly."
Despite his words, Cao Kun stood up, grabbed his bag, and started to walk out, glancing back at Jiang Li.
"Jiang, if Wu Ming wakes up, just tell her I’ve gone traveling. Stall for as long as you can."
Cao Kun looked at Wu Ming. ’She’s already called me ’daddy.’ What does half a life matter to me now?’
"Master Cao, where is it? I’ll go with you. We’ll be faster together."
"It’s not far. I found Wu Ming back then on a mountain in H City. But are you sure you want to come with me?" Cao Kun looked at Jiang Li. ’She attracts ’things’ so easily.’
"Yes. As long as it can save Wu Ming."
Jiang Li turned to look at Yu Huannian. "Xiao Nian, you stay here and watch Wu Ming. I’m going out with Master Cao."
"Okay. Be safe."
Jiang Li left with Cao Kun.
Cao Kun led the two of them up the same mountain from all those years ago. After searching for a long while, he finally found the grave.
"Back then, I saw that this grave was on a plot with excellent feng shui. The situation was urgent, so I didn’t think too much about it."
Jiang Li cleared away some of the weeds around the tombstone and read the name on it: Li Lingzhou.
Cao Kun was already off to the side, setting up offerings and preparing for the ritual.
Jiang Li could only stand guard nearby.
"Whoa, he’s terrifying! Run!" The ghost that was always following her was instantly scared away.
Jiang Li looked over but saw nothing. However, she could feel a murderous aura, like that of a general who had slaughtered countless men on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, Cao Kun had begun. "What happened back then was for a reason. I beg you, for the sake of Wu Ming, who is, in a sense, your wife... please help."
Jiang Li listened to Cao Kun’s words and watched him. The next moment, Cao Kun exclaimed joyfully, "Really? Okay, I promise! Thank you, thank you so much!"
Cao Kun stood up, swaying weakly. "Jiang, it’s done. You go back first. I still have things to take care of."
Jiang Li looked at Cao Kun, feeling that something was wrong. The next second, a lantern was thrust into her hand.
"Quick, go to that place from yesterday. Call out Wu Ming’s name. Once the lantern lights up, bring it back with you."
Jiang Li’s train of thought was shattered. She took the lantern from his hand. "Master Cao, you’ll be okay, right?"
"What could happen to me? This one is very reasonable. Go on, hurry. By the time you get there, the timing will be perfect."
Jiang Li had no choice but to rush toward yesterday’s location with Miao Anji.
After the two of them left, Cao Kun suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood. "COUGH, COUGH."
He looked at the tombstone before him. "A life for a life. I don’t ask you to take care of Wu Ming, only that you might help her in a moment of crisis."
...
Jiang Li and Miao Anji arrived at yesterday’s crime scene, which had been cordoned off by the police.
"Hello, I left something inside. Can I go over? I won’t go in, I’ll just stay on the edge."
"You can’t even be on the edge. The case isn’t closed yet. If you contaminate the scene, how are we supposed to answer to our superiors?"
"Can one of your officers come with me? It’ll only take a moment."
"No—" The officer was about to refuse again, but another officer came up and clapped him on the shoulder.
He turned to Jiang Li. "Miss Jiang, I’ll take you in."
Jiang Li gave him a grateful look and walked in, carrying the lantern.
Once inside, she began to call Wu Ming’s name.
After just one call, the lantern in her hand lit up.
Even Jiang Li was startled. She hadn’t expected to succeed so quickly.
"Thank you, we’re leaving now," Jiang Li said, walking quickly back the way she came.
"Huh?" The officer was dumbfounded. ’They just got here and they’re already leaving?’
Jiang Li returned to the hospital, staring at the lantern. Just as she was wondering what to do next, the lantern went out, and Wu Ming passed out again.
Jiang Li waited in the hospital room for news of Cao Kun. ’If something happened to Master Cao, too, how devastated would Wu Ming be when she wakes up?’
It wasn’t until noon the next day that Cao Kun pushed open the door and walked in.
"Worried about me? Don’t be. There’s no substitute for experience. I’m too skilled for anything to happen to me."
Seeing Cao Kun looking so full of life, Jiang Li’s heart was finally at ease.
A short while later, Wu Ming woke up as well, opening her eyes to several worried faces gathered around her bed.
"Hiss... why does my head hurt so much?" Wu Ming sat up happily, but the pain in her head made her fall back again.
"How long was I asleep?"
"Not long, just a day. It’s good that you’re awake, that’s all that matters." Seeing that she was finally back to normal, Jiang Li stepped forward and hugged her.
"What happened to Wu Yonghui and the others?"
"They’ll probably be sentenced to ten years or more."
After hearing this, Wu Ming smiled. "Ten years. He’ll probably die in there. That’s fine by me."
"You get some rest. When you get out, I’ll have Xiao Nian cook you some restorative meals."
At the Luo Family residence, Wu Tong took the initiative to find Luo Jingheng.
