Chapter 318: Rhain’s Unfathomable Ambition
After their meeting was over, Rhain and his group left the Vaelstrum Clan.
Rhain stopped on the sprawling stone plaza, turning toward Vulcan and fourteen Domain Masters.
"Vulcan. Take the men and return to the Pavilion. Maintain a high alert and prepare for upcoming duel,"" Rhain commanded.
"Yes, Master!" Vulcan and the fourteen Domain Masters bowed.
With a series of swooshing sounds, they soared into the sky, heading back to the commercial district to execute his orders.
Rhain was left alone with Elara.
They turned and began walking side by side down the streets of Valdris City.
As they walked, Rhain silently circulated the newly acquired disguise technique within his meridians.
Buzz—!
The space around his face rippled.
The dignified, middle-aged features of Grandmaster Korryn melted away like a reflection on disturbed water.
In the blink of an eye, he transformed into an entirely ordinary, forgettable guy that no one would ever bother to look twice at in a crowded street.
Walking beside him, Elara watched this seamless transformation.
She opened her mouth to speak, but hesitated, an incredibly awkward expression appearing on her beautiful face.
She remained quiet, simply casting strange, uncomfortable glances at him from the corner of her eye as they walked.
Noticing her highly unnatural reaction, Rhain chuckled lightly.
"What is it, Lady Elara?" Rhain asked. "Did something happen?"
A wry smile surfaced on Elara’s lips. "It is nothing serious... It just feels strange to walk beside a person who continuously changes their face from one to another. It makes one wonder which face is the true one."
Rhain shrugged his shoulders indifferently, a joking smile appearing on his ordinary face. "If I don’t change my face, the royal assassins will chase me down the streets like maddened dogs. I simply cannot help it."
Hearing his casual joke about the powerful Imperial executioners, Elara couldn’t help but smile.
But soon, her intelligent blue eyes turned remarkably serious.
"Rhain," Elara asked softly. "Why did you have to challenge Alchemy Emperor Marcellis to an alchemy duel? And especially... betting your own life on it? It is too dangerous."
Rhain thought for a second before replying.
"The rumors of our Celestial Elixir Pavilion selling demonic pills had already become a massive sensation. To completely overshadow a sensation, there is a need for a much bigger sensation," Rhain explained, "And what could possibly be a bigger sensation than the undisputed Alchemy Emperor losing in a public duel? After this duel concludes, the Celestial Elixir Pavilion will be known by every single person in the dynasty. It can even be a good opportunity to open our branches in other cities of Inner Province."
Elara looked at him, her highly intelligent blue eyes shimmering. "Are you really so certain that you can beat the Alchemy Emperor?"
Rhain didn’t answer immediately.
He fell silent as he continued to walk. The joking smile on his face disappeared after a while, replaced by a solemn expression.
"In truth..." Rhain spoke, "I am not sure either."
Elara’s blue eyes widened in sheer surprise.
"I do not know how powerful the alchemy of a monster who has practiced it for eight hundred years truly is," Rhain admitted calmly, staring straight ahead. "Compared to him, I have not even touched the path of alchemy for eight months."
Less than eight months! If the outside world heard this, they would instantly cough up blood and die from sheer inadequacy!
Rhain let out a quiet exhale. "In the past month, I have taken many decisions that I wasn’t entirely sure of. When I dared to kill Lucius, I wasn’t sure whether I would live to see the next day. When I entered the Crucible Arena, I did not know whether I would come out alive or successfully obtain the technique I needed.
He very much welcomed any certainty, but reality was rarely so kind.
"All I have done is take the best possible decision I could think of in that particular situation... and firmly believe in myself. Even today, I am doing the same, believing that I can defeat the undisputed Alchemy Emperor."
Elara stared at Rhain for a moment. His words struck her heart deeply.
"I trust you," Elara said suddenly. "My instincts say that you will definitely win."
Rhain let out a hearty laugh. "Is this the exact same instinct that made you ask your father not to sever your relationship with the Celestial Elixir Pavilion?"
Elara froze in her tracks, a look of surprise appearing on her face. "How... how did you know about that?"
Rhain smiled faintly. "Vulcan told me. He said Patriarch Thorian had come to visit the Pavilion, fully intending to sever all ties after the rumors of the demonic pills spread. But because you earnestly requested him not to, he eventually held back."
Elara lowered her head slightly, "I truly believe that you are destined for greatness, young master Rhain," Elara murmured softly. "I know that you can definitely come out of this desperate situation stronger than ever before."
Rhain stopped walking and looked at her. "I sincerely thank you for all the help you have provided me, Lady Elara."
Soon, the majestic gates of the Valdris Royal Academy appeared in their line of sight.
After saying a polite goodbye to Elara, Rhain headed straight toward the inner grounds of the Academy.
However, he did not return to his secluded courtyard. He walked directly toward the Library of the Academy
His goal was to learn about the different laws of the world.
Although he could not actively master a law without first assimilating its corresponding Origin Seed, he could still use that profound knowledge to elevate his subordinates.
If he could guide Vulcan and his Domain Master slaves to shatter their bottlenecks, his faction’s strength would skyrocket.
The Library of the Valdris Royal Academy was astronomically far bigger and more magnificent than that of Stormveil Academy.
As Rhain stepped through the doors, the bustling activity of the disciples instantly came to a halt.
Dozens of eyes locked onto him as he had already changed his face back to his original appeared.
And everyone immediately recognised him as the wanted fugitive who had brought unprecedented trouble to their doorsteps.
Apart from the Ancestor, Dean Qaylus, and a few Grandmaster Alchemists, no one else in the Valdris Royal Academy knew that Rhain was actually Grandmaster Korryn.
To the vast majority of the disciples and instructors, he was just a walking disaster.
They simply could not understand why their Academy was actively protecting this arrogant youth and going against the Royal Family, especially when an Imperial Decree had already been issued.
"That’s him... the fugitive who killed the Crown Prince’s clone."
"Why is our Academy shielding such a man? He is going to drag us all into a war against the Imperial Families!"
The disciples glared at him, their eyes filled with deep resentment and hostility.
But despite their furious murmurs, not a single person dared to step forward or block his path.
They all knew perfectly well that this man was protected by the Old Dean himself.
Whoever dared to touch him would face the Monarch’s wrath!
Rhain completely ignored their venomous stares.
Their opinions meant less than nothing to him.
He walked leisurely past the lower floors, heading straight into the highly restricted upper section where martial arts and profound secrets exclusively reserved for Domain Masters were kept.
