Chapter 32: Chapter 32. Prove Me Wrong
Chapter 32. Prove Me Wrong
Rosa Lin’s POV
"Um, Mr. Don," I called his name softly.
"Yes?"
"Wh- Wh- What are you doing?" I asked.
He frowned at me. "What do you mean what am I doing?"
I blinked my eyelids until tilting my head to look at him. I saw him raise an eyebrow, gazing at me with a smirk on his face.
I chuckled nervously and tried to pull my hand away from his grasp. He seemed to come back to his senses. His eyes darted to his hand on my fingers. He quickly pulled his hand away.
I noticed a fluttering of his eyelid as he quickly turned away and then grabbed his hands like he had touched something he wasn’t supposed to touch.
I stared at him with my lips hanging open. He avoided my gaze and looked out the side of his window, tilting his head up like he was suddenly finding the trees outside interesting.
Okay, what the hell was that?
I couldn’t say anything. I couldn’t even make out any words from my mouth. My heart throbbed so violently in my chest, it felt painful. I felt breathless.
I swallowed hard and then tilted my head to the side. What the hell was that?
I grabbed the knob of the door and struggled to push it open again, but it still didn’t budge. This was really getting on my nerves right now.
"Can you—can you please help me with the door? I—I have classes. I need to go," I said quickly, avoiding his gaze.
I felt the heat of his gaze when he finally turned slowly to look at me. He didn’t make any move. I felt him lean in closer.
"Um, sorry. I wanted to ask if you would—"
I slowly turned my head to look at him when he froze. He looked at me, he blinked. His lips hung open for a fraction of a second, then he frowned and cleared his throat.
"Yeah, um, nothing. Yeah, that’s right. You have lectures. It’s—it’s fine. Goodbye," he said.
He pressed against the button on the side of the door. I heard the click of the car door by my side, and then the door slowly began to elevate, giving space to the air outside.
Okay, enough of this. What the hell is wrong with him?
I turned my head to look at him. He was leaning against his side of the door now. I saw him biting against his fingers. That’s weird. I’ve never seen him that way. It looked kind of cute, like he was nervous.
What the hell is he nervous about?
I stretched my hand and placed it against his hand, calling his attention. He slowly tilted his head to look at me, unsure.
"Can you please stop?" I asked.
He frowned. "Stop what?"
"If you want to tell me something, you should tell me. Don’t spike up my curiosity and then avert it like it doesn’t mean anything. Tell me what you wanted to say," I said.
He looked at me. I saw his features falter, like he was confused. Oh my god, he looked like a cute little kid right now.
Then I saw him let out a soft breath as he chuckled and shook his head.
"Okay then, if you say so. I, uh, I was just thinking. I know you’re taking a major in music, and, uh, I know that you are still trying to build yourself from the ground up, you know? The housekeeper has been giving me reports on how you’ve been practicing in the music room at my mansion," he said.
I nodded my head slowly. "Have you been monitoring me all these months?" I asked, squinting my eyelids at him.
He chuckled. "No," he said, but I could see the glistening light in his eyes. He was definitely lying.
I gave him a suspicious look.
He smiled. "Relax, I’m not some weird stalker."
"I never said you were," I replied.
He chuckled. "Anyway, back to my point. I was just wondering if you would like to do some private practice with me. I mean, in my mansion. You don’t necessarily have to struggle with the school music room. My mansion is free for you, and, well, it’s very much closer to Mia’s place, and if you decide to stay over with me, it’s easily accessible to do all the practice you want—together with me."
The moment he was done, he stared at me expectantly. I opened my mouth, but I failed to produce any words.
The days I had spent in his mansion flashed back in my mind. Countless days when I had so much free time, I would stumble into the room with my notebooks and my music notes, practicing endlessly and tirelessly until I felt satisfied.
The warmth filled my chest as I looked at him, when I noticed that his gaze was getting more intense, just like before. I shyly avoided his gaze and stared at the dashboard.
"Well, that actually sounds tempting," I said.
"So?" he asked.
I chuckled. I quickly turned away and relaxed in the chair, turning to look at the widely opened door now. "I will still need to think about it," I said.
When I turned back to look at him, I saw him nodding his head. "Yeah, sure. Yeah, yeah, sure. You should think about it. That’s definitely the wisest decision. I mean, you are still trying to think about staying with me at the mansion, so you should take all the time you need."
He avoided my gaze now and stared ahead of him.
I smiled. I thought about it for a while. Spending time with him, practicing together with this enigmatic, confusing, but jovial, friendly young man who seems to be doing stupid, crazy things to my head.
I shook my head and blinked my eyelids. Stupid, Rosa, I thought to myself. It wouldn’t actually be bad.
I opened my mouth, I was about to speak, but I caught movement from the corner of my eye through the windshield. That was when I turned.
I saw Mac casually stepping into the entrance of the official quarters. I froze, my eyes widened. Oh my God, what is he doing here?
He was holding what looked like a paper in his hand. He casually walked in, swinging the paper, and then lifted his head. His eyes finally caught sight of the vehicle, and I saw him freeze, his hand dropping to his side.
I saw his mouth hang in a wide-open circle. He was probably stunned by the beauty and the luxury of the car, but that was not what my mind told me. My mind told me he was seeing me.
I quickly ducked and bent down immediately, gasping. Oh my god, I thought to myself. I need to go.
I tilted my head to look at Mr. Don. He was casually relaxed against his chair. I saw him frowning at me, then look ahead, probably noticing Mac through the windshield, then he turned back to look at me.
"What’s wrong? Why are you hiding?" he asked.
"I don’t want him to see me. Are you crazy?" I said.
"And so?" he asked.
"He’s my attacker. Don’t you get it? He’s out to get me. He’s definitely going to turn this into some bad misunderstanding," I said.
Mr. Don just raised an eyebrow at me like he didn’t care.
I shook my head. "I, uh, I need to go," I said. "I need to escape this."
I got down from the vehicle. I saw Mr. Don raise an eyebrow. "Aren’t you just making it worse? He’s going to see you."
But my adrenaline didn’t give me time to think. I was out of the car and bolting away towards the entrance.
Mac caught sight of me, disbelief in his eyes. His eyes darted from me back to the car at intervals like he was confused.
"Rosa!" he called.
I ignored him. I picked up speed and tried to rush towards the entrance. But then he rushed towards my side and stood in front of me.
I froze. I closed my eyes and let out a soft breath.
"Please step out of my way, Mac," I said, tilting my head to the side.
"What’s going on? Why are you stepping down from that car? Who’s inside of that car? Is it a lecturer?" he asked quickly.
I gnashed my teeth together. "It’s none of your business. What the hell are you doing here anyway?" I asked.
He chuckled. "Why wouldn’t I be here? My coach is also an official in this section, and I’m here to see him. What are you doing here?" he asked, staring at me suspiciously, stepping close towards me.
I stepped back. My eyelids fluttered uncontrollably. My lips opened, but no words came out.
I shook my head quickly. "I can’t do this right now."
I tried to side-step him, but he obstructed me once again. "No, you need to speak."
I saw him tilt his head to look back at the car, then he squinted his eyelids. "Is that not Mr. Don I am seeing at the driver’s seat? Why are you in his car? Are you sleeping with him?"
Oh my god.
I saw him slap his palm against his mouth. "You are sleeping with the Dean? You know, I really underestimated you. I thought I was the wrong one when I made those harsh words at you last semester, but I must have been actually right. Wasn’t it enough for you? Wasn’t it enough that you were desperately trying to hook up with me? Now you are doing it with the Dean?"
"Can you please shut up?" I said, unable to control my desperate fear and rage.
I flinched, realizing my voice was a little bit loud. I looked around, trying to ensure nobody was around to hear it, then I turned back at him and pointed at him. "Stop getting any bad ideas," I said.
He raised an eyebrow. "Oh, really?" He folded his arms. "Then prove me wrong," he said, gazing at me.
I saw the amused smile on his face. I knew he was about to take this and blow it out of proportion.
"Mac," I said, tilting my head to the side. "Don’t do this," I said.
He smirked. "I won’t, if you give me evidence that I’m wrong."
