I push my growing fear aside as I step outside of the cabin. Ahead the dragon stares back at me.

There’s no telling how much of a challenge this is about to be here... But I’ll make the best of the situation.

I’ll never be a strong slayer if I cower before the physical form of a dragon.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Without any hesitation I draw my sword and begin to make my way down the hill towards the dragon.

I push my growing fear aside as I step outside of the cabin.

Why isn’t it attacking me though.

Every dragon I’ve heard about or even the last one I fought against... It didn’t hesitate to attack me.

This one...

It almost looks like it’s waiting for me to approach.

I stop several meters away and lower my stance.

The dragon lets out a low growl.

Not loud enough to attack.

Just enough to remind me it’s still there, waiting for me to strike.

I watch for a moment as its eyes look slightly past me.

"Come on then," I mutter.

I tighten my grip around my sword.

The dragon suddenly shifts its weight.

Here it comes. I’m ready.

It takes one step...

Then another.

Slow. Slower than it should be.

Something doesn’t feel right about this situation anymore. A dragon is already able to stress me the hell out but this feeling is even worse.

It isn’t making any sudden moves to attack.

My heartbeat quickens.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

Every instinct tells me something is wrong, yet I can’t figure out what it is.

The dragon suddenly looks past me once again.

Only for a split second before its eyes return to mine.

Why would it possibly look behind me?

Before I can turn—

CRACK!!!!

The sound of splintering wood explodes behind me... Every instinct I’ve developed since becoming a slayer screams at me.

Move!

I throw myself forward without thinking.

BOOM!!!!

Something massive crashes into the ground where I had been standing.

The force throws dirt and shattered rock into the air as I roll across the hillside before quickly forcing myself back onto my feet.

My eyes immediately snap toward whatever attacked me.

Another dragon.

Slightly smaller than the one standing ahead of me.

Dark green scales cover its body while long scars stretch across its neck.

Its jaws slowly close after narrowly missing me.

So that’s how it is. It was an ambush from the beginning.

Does that mean Veronica is in on the whole plan here? She hasn’t come out to help me with this so I guess she must be against me after all.

To think the dragon in front of me was never initially trying to start a fight... It was stalling.

Keeping my attention so that I didn’t expect anything to happen. I’m a fool for not expecting this to be a trap in the first place.

Originally I thought it could be with the way everything looked.

I quickly glance between the two dragons.

One ahead and one behind me now.

Both of them slowly begin circling me.

"Seriously..." I mutter while tightening my grip around my sword.

I really hate the way this situation ended up.

The two dragons continue circling around me without taking another step forward.

Almost like they’re waiting for me to make the first move now.

They’re treating me like prey.

I slowly shift my footing and keep my sword raised between the both of them.

Sigh.

This really is bad for me.

I’ve barely managed to survive against a single dragon before.

Now I’m supposed to somehow fight two of them?

It won’t be possible, at least... Not head-on.

The larger dragon suddenly lets out a deep roar.

ROOOOOOAAAAARRRRR!!!!

The sound alone sends a chill throughout my entire body.

The smaller dragon immediately reacts.

It lunges forward.

CRACK!!!!

Its claws tear through the ground as it charges straight toward me.

Dodge!

I barely manage to throw myself to the side before its jaws snap shut where my chest had been only moments earlier.

The impact sends dirt flying into my face.

I force myself back onto my feet and slash toward its exposed side.

SLASH!!!!

My blade skims across the dark green scales, leaving behind nothing more than a shallow scratch.

...Seriously? I really can’t afford to just scratch these bastards.

That is nowhere near enough to even slow down the damn thing. I’ll have to try to find a chance to use the Valtor stance.

The dragon swings its tail around.

WHAM!!!!

I barely manage to raise my sword in time.

The force launches me backwards across the hillside.

I crash into the dirt before digging my boots into the ground.

My arms are already numb from just one hit.

I glance toward the larger dragon.

It still hasn’t moved... It is just watching.

Observing every move I make.

Why would... Nevermind. It isn’t even worth questioning right now.

That isn’t pride... It is confidence.

The larger dragon didn’t think it needed to help. It means they are doubting my strength as a slayer already which pisses me off quite a bit.

The smaller dragon lowers its body once more.

Its muscles tense.

Here it comes again.

Before it can charge—

BANG!!!!

A deafening gunshot echoes throughout the forest.

The bullet tears past my shoulder and slams into the smaller dragon’s neck.

The dragon immediately recoils with an enraged roar.

"Sorry I’m late. It takes awhile to get one of these," Veronica says from behind me.

I turn around to see her holding a rifle that appears to be glowing purple, almost like it was made from magic.

"I didn’t see any guns around," I reply with some confusion.

Guns are a newer creation that have been traveling across the world. Usually they rely on these tiny silver or copper bullets but... I didn’t expect them to be here.

"This is homemade," Veronica says with a smile on her face.

I look back towards the dragons to see blood slowly dropping onto the ground.

This is just the beginning of our battle.
