Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power
Chapter 31: Survival Of The Strongest [1]Drip.
Drip.
Dark green blood slowly falls from the smaller dragon’s neck before splashing against the grass beneath its feet.
Its crimson eyes never leave Veronica.
The larger dragon also shifts its attention toward her.
Looks like shooting one of them definitely got their attention.
"You’re lucky I finished it in time," Veronica says while resting the strange rifle against her shoulder.
"I still don’t understand how you made that," I reply with a bit of shock in my voice.
"You really do need to be taught some things," Veronica teases.
She lightly taps the side of the glowing purple rifle.
"I learned how to make this gun with magic awhile ago and I prefer to use it to hunt," Veronica says with some excitement.
I glance at the weapon again.
It doesn’t even resemble the guns I’ve seen before.
Most guns I’ve heard about are nothing more than metal tubes with wooden stocks.
This thing... Purple engravings stretch across the barrel while faint runes glow beneath the surface.
Almost like the entire weapon was built around magic instead of replacing anything with the gun itself.
The dragons let out another low growl.
Guess now isn’t exactly the time to ask questions.
~It definitely isn’t.
The smaller dragon lowers itself once again as its muscles tighten.
"It’s coming!" I shout.
"I know," Veronica replies with a calm tone.
Veronica raises the rifle.
Unlike me she is completely calm and collected. I need to get myself into the same mentality again.
Otherwise I’ll end up dead.
BANG!!!!
Another purple projectile shoots from the barrel.
The smaller dragon twists its body just enough for the shot to skim across its shoulder.
It lets out an enraged roar.
ROOOOOAAARRRR!!!!
Did she really miss a shot on that big of a target?
Veronica smiles.
The dragon suddenly stumbles.
Its front leg shakes before planting itself back into the dirt.
"Poison?" I ask.
"No," She answers.
She reaches into a pouch hanging from her waist before pulling out another glowing crystal.
"Temporary paralysis," Veronica says with a smile still on her face.
She calmly slides it into the side of the rifle.
Click.
"You made ammunition too?" I question.
"I made everything silly," Veronica answers with a casual tone.
How much time does this woman have on her hands?
I guess I should’ve prepared better for this fight as well. She is a lot more suited for what’s happening right now... More than me by a long shot.
The larger dragon finally moves.
Unlike the smaller one... It doesn’t charge.
It walks slowly towards us while watching for any sudden moves we try to make.
Almost like it is calculating exactly which move is the best to make before it reaches us again.
I hate confident enemies.
Especially when they actually have a reason to be confident.
"Don’t focus on the smaller one," Veronica suddenly says.
"What?" I question with some confusion.
"It isn’t leading the fight. The larger one is," Veronica answers as she raises the rifle again.
I quickly glance between the two dragons.
Now that she mentions it, the smaller dragon hasn’t made a single decision by itself.
Every time the larger dragon moved...
The smaller one followed.
Every roar, every pause, every attack.
~Seems she is teaching you something else.
Definitely. I need to be a lot more observant than I’ve been.
The larger dragon suddenly opens its mouth.
Heat begins gathering between its jaws.
"Move!" Veronica shouts.
I don’t hesitate as we both dive in opposite directions.
FWOOOOOSSHHH!!!!
A torrent of crimson flames tears across the hillside.
The grass instantly catches fire.
Trees explode apart as the flames continue racing through the forest behind us.
The heat alone feels unbearable.
I quickly push myself back onto my feet.
"So that’s what it is like to experience the fire from a dragon..." I say while looking back at the damage.
"So you’ve never fought two dragons before?" Veronica asks.
"No. Only one," I answer with a serious tone.
She shrugs.
Even now... She doesn’t seem particularly worried.
I really do need to learn more about her, especially if she is this calm during such a dangerous situation. It could teach me a few things about keeping myself in the same mentality.
The smaller dragon suddenly lunges again.
CRACK!!!!
It tears through the burning grass.
This time it is even faster than before. Almost like it just got some more speed.
I immediately lower my stance.
This is the opportunity for me to utilize this stance... Just need a little longer.
It continues getting closer...
And closer...
Now!
Dash!
The Valtor Stance activates beneath my feet as I explode toward the dragon instead of away from it.
Its eyes widen for the briefest moment.
It definitely wasn’t expecting this from me in the slightest.
I drive my sword toward the same wound Veronica created.
SLASH!!!!
The blade sinks much deeper this time.
Dark green blood sprays across my arm as the dragon roars in pain before swinging one massive claw toward my head.
Just barely I manage to duck underneath it before kicking off the ground again.
Dash!
The Valtor Stance launches me backwards just before its tail crashes into the earth.
BOOOOM!!!!
Rocks explode around me.
I skid backwards while breathing heavily.
Somehow I managed to get back to Veronica in one piece while this fight is still going.
The stance actually proved to be effective after all.
"I can’t believe it actually worked properly," I say with a bit of shock in my voice.
"The stance?" Veronica asks.
"Yeah," I answer.
"The first attack succeeds because they’re surprised. Don’t let it get to your head too much," Veronica advises as she reloads another crystal.
Click.
She raises the rifle.
BANG!!!!
The glowing projectile streaks past me.
The larger dragon suddenly twists its neck.
The shot barely misses its eye before disappearing into the trees.
"Now that one missed. How sad," Veronica says while calmly reloading another crystal.
She doesn’t sound disappointed in the slightest.
The larger dragon suddenly turns its head toward the forest.
Its ears twitch.
Then...
It roars again... But this time it was toward the trees.
"What was that?" I question.
Veronica slowly lowers the rifle.
"Exactly what I didn’t want," She answers with a bit of disappointment in her voice.
The forest falls completely silent.
Even the flames seem to have died down a bit.
Everything appears to be silent for another moment before...
CRACK.
Another branch snaps somewhere deeper within the forest.
Followed by another.
The sound grows louder and closer.
My grip tightens around my sword.
"Please don’t tell me that’s another damn dragon," I speak with a bit of concern in my voice.
Veronica lets out a quiet sigh.
"I was hoping these two were hunting alone," Veronica responds while aiming her rifle once again.
The bushes begin shaking.
Heavy footsteps echo through the burning trees.
One pair.
Then another.
A set of Crimson eyes slowly begins to appear from the forest.
That makes three dragons now...
~Odds of survival have considerably decreased.
