Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power

Chapter 32: Survival Of The Strongest [2]

My survival odds decreasing was definitely expected with more dragons showing up like this.

The crimson eyes continue watching us from between the burning trees.

One set belongs to a dragon only slightly smaller than the one already standing in front of us.

The second pair is lower to the ground.

For a moment I can’t make out the rest of its body through the smoke.

Then it steps into the open.

Dark red scales cover its body while two curved horns stretch from the sides of its head. It is smaller than the others, but its body is much thinner and its claws appear longer.

That makes four.

I’m really starting to think that this situation can’t get any worse, right?

"Veronica," I say while slowly backing toward her.

"I can count," she responds.

"Not that. You still don’t seem as worried..." I say with a bit of a surprised tone.

"Best not to worry about it. Just focus on who can be killed first," Veronica advises.

The smaller dragon we injured remains between us and the others.

Dark green blood continues dripping from its neck and shoulder, but it doesn’t seem as affected by the paralysis anymore.

Its front leg has stopped shaking.

"How long was that paralysis supposed to last?" I question.

"Longer than that," Veronica answers.

She reaches into the pouch again.

Only a few crystals remain inside.

I don’t know much about her weapon, but I doubt that’s enough ammunition to deal with four dragons.

The largest dragon releases a low growl.

The two that emerged from the forest stop immediately.

Just like the injured one did before.

A dragon that’s in charge, that is always a fun sight.

"They’re part of the same hunting group," Veronica says.

"So killing the leader should make the others leave?" I question.

"No. That isn’t how it works," Veronica answers.

Her answer comes without hesitation.

"Then what happens?" I ask curiously.

"They just get angry, nothing special," Veronica answers casually.

Anger makes sense when you are watching your kind die.

The horned dragon begins circling around our left side while the thinner one moves toward the right.

They’re surrounding us.

The larger dragon remains directly ahead, keeping its eyes fixed on Veronica.

It understands that her rifle is the greatest threat.

That means the smaller dragons are probably supposed to keep me busy while it deals with her.

~Your observation is correct.

I tighten my grip around my sword.

"What do we do?" I ask.

"Survive dummy," Veronica answers playfully.

I guess that is the most logical plan to follow at the moment. Survival itself.

Veronica raises her rifle and aims toward the horned dragon.

The larger dragon immediately roars.

ROOOOOAAARRRR!!!!

All three of the smaller dragons move at once.

The injured one charges directly toward me.

The horned dragon lunges for Veronica while the thinner one disappears into the smoke.

I didn’t expect it to just disappear into the smoke like that... Where did it go?

"Kain!" Veronica shouts.

I focus on the dragon in front of me.

Its jaws open as it rushes across the burning grass.

Heat gathers in the back of its throat.

No time to dodge normally.

I lower my body and force the power of the stance into toward my legs.

Dash!

The Valtor Stance launches me to the side.

FWOOOOSSHHH!!!!

Flames tear past my back.

The heat burns through my shirt as I roll across the ground and I push myself back up just as the dragon swings its tail.

THUD!!!!

The impact catches me across the ribs.

Pain explodes through my side as my feet leave the ground.

I crash into the dirt and slide across the grass.

"Kain!" Veronica shouts with a bit of worry in her voice.

"I’m fine!" I shout back.

I’m definitely not fine but it’ll be okay.

~Two ribs may be fractured.

You didn’t have to tell me that just yet... I could’ve gone without the information for the time being.

The dragon rushes toward me again.

Its neck is still bleeding.

Veronica already gave me an opening, I just need to make sure I don’t waste it.

The dragon raises one of its claws.

I push myself up and lower my stance again.

Pain spreads through my ribs as I force power into my legs once again.

The stance responds, but not as quickly as before.

I’m already getting exhausted from the amount of times I use the stance.

Dash!

I shoot forward just as the claw comes down.

CRASH!!!!

The ground breaks apart behind me.

I drag the edge of my sword across the dragon’s wounded shoulder.

SLASH!!!!

More blood spills from beneath its scales and the dragon twists around with another roar.

Before it can attack, I plant one foot against its side and kick away.

Dash!

My body launches backward.

This time I just barely land on my feet.

The stance is becoming easier to activate, but every use drains more strength from my legs.

I’m starting to run out of time in this fight... Something that I can’t afford to lose.

I need to find a way to kill these dragons a bit faster before everything starts to catch up to me.

BANG!!!!

A purple projectile slams into the horned dragon’s chest.

Glowing cracks spread across its scales, forcing It to stumble back, but it doesn’t fall.

Veronica quickly reaches for another crystal.

The larger dragon moves before she can reload.

Its massive body explodes forward.

Despite its size, it crosses the distance between them almost instantly.

"Behind you!" I shout.

Veronica turns.

The dragon swings its claw.

She raises the rifle in front of herself.

CRACK!!!!

The weapon blocks the attack, but the force sends her flying across the hillside.

She crashes through the remains of a burning tree.

I’m sure she’ll be alright. I can’t let worry cloud my way of thinking right now... It’ll get me killed.

~That is the correct way to look at the situation.
