Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power

Chapter 33: Survival Of The Strongest [3]

The injured dragon snaps its jaws toward me.

I jump back just before its teeth close around empty air.

My thoughts are already getting interrupted by the battle again...

But so is my concern for her. I at least need to make sure she is alive.

The thinner dragon is missing too.

Where did it—

A shadow passes above me.

I look up.

The thin dragon is clinging to the side of a tree.

Its claws dig into the burning bark before it launches itself toward me.

I raise my sword.

CLANG!!!!

Its claws crash against the blade and the impact forces me onto one knee.

It doesn’t fight like the others.

Instead of overpowering me, it pulls its claw back and immediately attacks from another angle.

CLANG!!!! CLANG!!!!

SLASH!!!!

One claw slips past my sword and tears across my shoulder.

Blood sprays onto the ground and I stumble backward.

The injured dragon approaches from the front while the thin one moves behind me.

They’re working together to keep me caught off guard with every attack they attempt. It is definitely not a terrible plan by them in the slightest.

It is already putting me in a worse situation physically...

The injured dragon charges again.

I don’t move.

Its jaws open wider as it closes the distance.

Closer.

Closer.

I can feel the heat building inside its mouth.

The thin dragon rushes from behind me.

Perfect.

I lower my stance at the last possible moment.

Dash!

My body shoots to the side.

The injured dragon tries to stop, but the thin one is already in the air.

BANG!!!!

They collide.

The thin dragon’s claws tear into the wounded section of the other dragon’s neck.

Dark green blood bursts across both of them.

The injured dragon falls onto its side while the thinner one rolls across the ground.

It worked.

I didn’t defeat either of them, but I managed to create an opening. That alone should be enough to do something here.

~An effective use of their own coordination.

I rush toward the injured dragon before it can stand.

This is the best chance I have to finish it before the other one can help again.

I raise my sword with both hands.

The dragon notices me approaching and its crimson eyes widen as I drive the blade toward the opening in its neck.

SLICE!!!!

The sword tears through flesh.

Warm blood covers my hands as the blade sinks deeper.

The dragon releases a broken roar and thrashes beneath me.

Its wing slams into my side.

THUD!!!!

I lose my grip on the sword and hit the ground.

The dragon struggles to rise, but my blade remains buried in its neck.

It isn’t dead yet.

Sigh. This can never just end the way I need it to.

I reach for the sword again.

A loud crack echoes from behind me.

The larger dragon stands over the fallen tree Veronica crashed through.

It raises one claw.

Veronica rolls out of the way.

BOOOOM!!!!

The claw crushes the tree beneath it and she slides another crystal into the rifle.

Click.

The dragon’s tail swings toward her before she can fire, but Veronica ducks beneath it and presses the barrel against the dragon’s side.

BANG!!!!

Purple light explodes between them.

The dragon roars as the projectile tears through several scales.

Veronica is thrown backward again, but this time she remains on her feet.

Blood runs from the corner of her mouth.

At least I know she is still alive.

The horned dragon suddenly charges her from the side.

She doesn’t see it. Damnit.

I abandon my sword and run toward her.

"Veronica!" I shout.

She looks in my direction.

The horned dragon lowers its head.

Its two curved horns point directly toward her stomach.

I won’t reach her with the way I’m running now, shit. I’ll have to use my stance again to get the distance.

My legs can hardly take much more the way it is... But I don’t have any other choices here.

I lower my body.

The Valtor Stance power forms beneath my feet.

It feels unstable.

Dash!

Pain tears through both legs as I launch forward.

The ground disappears beneath my feet.

For a second I feel like I’m flying.

Then I slam into Veronica.

We both crash away from the horned dragon as it tears through the space where she stood.

Its horns rip apart another tree.

Veronica pushes me off her.

"That was reckless," Veronica says.

"You’re welcome," I reply.

She looks toward my legs.

Blood is beginning to soak through my pants near my knees.

"Can you still move?" Veronica asks.

"I don’t know. I’ll find out in a second here," I respond.

The injured dragon releases another weak roar behind us.

The thinner dragon has recovered from the collision and it walks toward the injured one and lowers its head.

Without any hesitation it bites into the wounded dragon’s neck.

CRUNCH!!!!

The injured dragon struggles beneath it.

What is it doing? Why the hell would it be eating one of its own.

The thin dragon tears away a chunk of flesh and swallows it.

The horned dragon turns from us.

It rushes toward the injured dragon as well.

Both of them begin attacking it.

Dark green blood sprays across the burning grass while the wounded dragon tries to defend itself.

"They’re eating their own ally," I say.

"They don’t see it as an ally anymore," Veronica replies.

The larger dragon doesn’t stop them.

It watches without making a single sound.

"Why?" I question with confusion in my voice.

Veronica slowly stands.

"Because it became the weakest member of the group," Veronica answers as she wipes off her clothes.

The injured dragon lets out one final roar as the sound quickly fades... the other two continue tearing into it.

I should feel relieved.

One of the dragons is dying without us needing to finish it.

Instead I’m a bit pissed off. I’m missing out on potential dragon essence.

The thin dragon’s body begins to change.

Its muscles tighten beneath its scales.

The wound along its side slowly closes.

The horned dragon grows larger as it continues feeding.

"They’re absorbing something from it," I say.

"Strength," Veronica answers.

I look toward the sword still buried in the dying dragon’s neck.

A faint red glow begins forming around the body.

Something inside me reacts.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

My heart pounds harder.

The same strange feeling I felt after fighting the first dragon begins spreading through my body.

~Dragon essence has been detected.

How the hell...

~Absorption is possible.

The two dragons are already consuming it. It would be dumb for me to even go over there right now.

The larger one is watching us.

My legs are barely holding me up.

Ba-dum.

The glow around the dying dragon grows brighter.

The other dragons notice it too.

The thin one stops eating and turns its head toward me.

Its crimson eyes narrow.

The larger dragon steps forward.

The ground trembles beneath its weight.

Veronica raises her damaged rifle.

A crack now stretches across the glowing barrel.

"How many shots do you have left?" I ask.

She looks into the pouch.

"One," She answers.

"Is that enough?" I question with concern in my voice.

"No," Veronica answers almost instantly.

The horned dragon lifts its blood-covered head and the thin dragon begins moving toward us again.

The larger dragon opens its mouth as flames gather between its jaws.

Three dragons remain.

Veronica has one shot.

And my sword is still lodged inside the dying dragon.

~Absorb the essence.

I clench my fists.

"Veronica," I say.

"What?" Veronica questions.

"I have a terrible idea," I say quietly.

She gives me a quick glance.

"Is it worse than standing here?" Veronica asks curiously.

"Probably not," I respond.

"Then just do it," Veronica says with a serious tone.

The larger dragon releases a deafening roar.

ROOOOOAAARRRR!!!!

The flames within its mouth become brighter.

I force my injured legs to move.

Not away from the dragons this time... toward the dying one.

The thin dragon immediately rushes to intercept me.

Veronica raises the rifle.

Click.

Her final crystal locks into place.

She smiles despite the blood running down her face.

BANG!!!!
