Before Veronica has a chance to speak more on the half breed disappearance, Raven joins us more closely.

"I think it would be best to show you the path to the blacksmith before I depart," Raven says with a soft tone in her voice.

I look at Veronica, then back to Raven.

"You are departing after?" I question.

"Yes. I have some stuff I need to attend to as well," Raven answers.

"I’ll also be leaving. Probably after you leave this cabin," Veronica chimes in.

So I’ll be back on my own? That isn’t too bad since I’m kind of used to it for the most part.

I should be okay for the time being anyway.

As long as no dragons ambush me again... I think that I should be able to handle any fights that come my way. Whether that is confidence or not, that is a different story.

"I think it is the best idea for you both to depart. I appreciate all the help you gave me," I speak with a genuine tone.

"It is our job to kill dragons," Raven responds with a serious tone.

I look down towards my hands for a moment.

Killing dragons really is something I didn’t ever think I’d be able to do. They are huge monsters that most people would run away from in fear.

Yet, I run towards them with the intent to kill each one I meet.

The life of a slayer really is something.

We spend the rest of the day recovering and taking it easy until it is time for us to leave.

It has been a day since everything happened with the ambush... But Raven is ready to go. So without questioning it I get up and follow her out the cabin.

Veronica gives a wave with her usual smile before we part ways.

Step. Step. Step.

We eventually fade away into the forest but this time we are going a completely different direction.

Was it a smart move to part ways with Veronica?

I feel like she would be a good ally to have nearby at all times... Ugh.

Then again, she probably didn’t want to stick around for a reason. It is the same thing with Raven who plans to leave after we reach this blacksmith.

At least she is keeping her word with helping me get a new sword instead of letting me suffer.

That much I can appreciate.

"She didn’t seem to be a slayer," Raven breaks the silence.

"What makes you think that?" I ask with a bit of curiosity.

Raven doesn’t answer for a moment.

"I’ve been a slayer for a couple years but I’ve never seen her around once," Raven answers with a bit of caution in her voice.

"Well, she helped me kill the dragons. I don’t think she’s an enemy," I say with a carefree tone.

She might’ve rubbed off on me a little bit.

That reminds me, she killed the one dragon... So how did I get dragon essence from it?

~There are some rare instances where you can still obtain the essence. That was one of them.

Why could I obtain it there?

~At the moment the circumstances aren’t appearing within my mind. I’ll let you know when I can explain.

As useful as ever.

Step. Step. Step.

"Regardless we aren’t that far from the town," Raven responds, changing the topic.

We’ve been walking for about an hour now so I guess that makes sense that we’d make it somewhere.

I don’t think everything is this close... Otherwise dragons would be destroying even more places without any hesitation. Unless there is something special about the town itself?

This blacksmith does make special swords for slayers so maybe it has too much protection for them to attack.

"What exactly is this town called?" I ask with some curiosity in my voice.

"Hyvale," Raven answer almost immediately.

Hyvale? I definitely haven’t heard of this town before so this will be quite interesting.

As we finally begin to approach the town I can see a road forming in front of us with a bunch of buildings around it.

Most of it definitely appears to be on the older side with the cracks going up along the walls, but they still stand strong.

It is definitely a fully human built town which is kind of surprising to see sometimes.

Lots of different races exist within the world so you don’t always know what to expect for the towns. Especially as someone who has never been outside the village before.

I’m taking this in.

It really is nice to see everything around here.

Some buildings are made from brick while others appear to be some sort of black stone.

"The blacksmith is right on the corner over there," Raven says while pointing ahead.

I focus more on the corner to see a bunch of smoke coming from a chimney as I notice a small area filled with a variety of things. Swords, axes, different sets of armor, and shields.

Chains also appear to be dangling around from the rooftop as we get closer.

"I’ll handle getting you a new sword like I promised," Raven says with a kind tone in her voice.

"Thank you Raven," I reply with appreciation in my voice.

Upon reaching the blacksmith I can see a short man slamming down a hammer onto a blade over an anvil. He has a long black beard, he is bald, and wearing a leather apron.

His clothes look fairly normal but I don’t think I’ve seen such a short man before.

~A dwarf would be the accurate term.

Right. I forgot I just thought about all of the races existing but didn’t think of that.

I’ve never seen one in person so this is a new experience for me.

I really am still learning about the world.

Clang!!!

I leave my thoughts behind as he looks up towards us both. His brown eyes immediately lock onto me first.

"Hey Balgrim," Raven says casually.

His eyes leave me and shift right over to Raven.

"Hey Kid! It has been awhile since you’ve stopped by!" He shouts with a bit of excitement in his voice.
