Positivity.

Honestly I can’t argue much with her on that since she’s right. Focusing on the good stuff isn’t the worst thing in the world.

"Moving on from all that, we should find a place to set-up a small camp," Sylvia says while looking around.

"I thought we’d keep walking until dark," I reply.

"We could but I’d rather not be exhausted before we even reach our destination," Sylvia says.

After everything that’s happened over the past few days, getting some proper rest probably isn’t the worst idea.

Besides...

I still have quite a bit to learn from her.

Sylvia steps off the road and gestures for me to follow.

"There should be a good spot nearby," Sylvia speaks with confidence in her voice.

I look across the open fields once again.

Compared to the forests I’ve gotten used to, this place feels kind of peaceful.

The wind rolls through the tall grass while a few birds fly overhead.

No dragons, burning buildings, or any sort of screaming... Just silence.

It is kind of nice.

"You’re smiling," Sylvia points out.

I immediately look over at Sylvia.

"I am?" I question.

"You are," She answers without hesitation.

I quickly rub my face.

"I didn’t even notice," I say with a bit of shock in my voice.

"I guess that’s a good sign then," Sylvia replies with a bit of joy in her voice.

Maybe she’s right. For the first time since leaving the village behind, I don’t feel like garbage.

I mean my hatred towards the dragons still lingers but this is kind of nice.

It feels like I can finally breathe again without constantly looking over my shoulder.

I shouldn’t get used to it though.

After another few minutes of walking, Sylvia stops beside an old stone well.

Nearby sits the remains of what was probably a farmhouse years ago.

Only part of the foundation is still standing while weeds have completely taken over the area.

"This should work," Sylvia says quietly.

"You’ve been here before?" I ask.

"A couple times in the past but I don’t really venture out that far," Sylvia answers.

She walks over to the well before looking inside.

She smiles as she looks back at me.

"Looks like our luck is holding, water is still inside of the well," Sylvia says with excitement.

Luck...

I don’t know if I’d call everything that’s happened recently lucky.

Then again... I was originally saved by the elder when I could’ve died.

After that I met Ash, Raven, Veronica, and now Sylvia.

Maybe I have been luckier than I thought.

"What?" Sylvia asks after noticing me staring.

"Nothing," I respond with a laid back tone.

"You’re terrible at hiding when you’re thinking about something," Sylvia teases.

"Am I really?" I question.

She nods.

"It shows all over your face," Sylvia responds before letting out a laugh.

That’s definitely good to know... I’ll have to work on hiding that better. I don’t want everyone to know when I’m thinking about stuff.

"Anyway! We need to get some stuff together. Fire wood for starters," Sylvia says while looking around.

"I’ll handle that then," I reply before turning away from her.

I head toward a small group of trees nearby while keeping my sword at my side.

The branches here are much thinner than the ones back near the shack.

I guess those are completely different forests after all.

After gathering an armful of fallen branches, I head back toward the camp.

Sylvia already has a small pile waiting.

"You work fast," I say while looking at the pile.

"I’ve had plenty of time to get used to finding firewood," Sylvia replies with a smile.

Together we begin arranging the wood into a small pile.

She kneels beside it before pulling two stones from one of her pouches.

Clack. Clack.

A few sparks jump between them.

Moments later a small flame begins dancing across the dry grass beneath the wood.

"That was easier than I expected," I say.

"You’ve never started a campfire before?" Sylvia asks with a bit of shock in her voice.

"Not really," I respond while crossing my arms.

"Makes sense. Your people probably covered everything for you," Sylvia says with a soft tone.

"Yeah... That is pretty accurate," I reply quietly.

It doesn’t bother me that she’s right or anything, just hate remembering it all.

The fire slowly grows brighter as warmth begins spreading around us.

I find myself staring into the flames.

The image of my village flashes through my mind again.

Burning homes, smoke, and the dragons.

...

I quickly shake my head.

That is exactly why it is best that I don’t think about the village too much... It just brings back the terrible memories from that day all over again.

Sylvia notices.

"You okay?" Sylvia asks with concern in her voice.

I force out a small smile.

"Yeah, just thinking," I answer.

She doesn’t ask what about.

Instead she reaches into her bag and pulls out a loaf of bread along with a few dried strips of meat.

"Here," She says as she tosses one toward me.

I barely catch it.

"Thanks," I reply with a genuine tone.

"I figured you’d be hungry," Sylvia says while pulling out some more.

"I am," I reply with a soft tone.

Kind of starving if I’m being honest... I don’t remember what I ate last. Everything kind of comes and goes lately.

I take a bite of the bread.

It’s a little stale but it still tastes better than nothing.

Sylvia begins eating as well while quietly watching the fire.

"So..." Sylvia starts.

She looks toward me.

"What do you want to do after all this?" Sylvia finishes with a question.

I stop chewing.

"What do you mean?" I respond.

"After the war with the dragons is over," Sylvia says before she tears another piece of bread off.

I haven’t really thought much about what will happen when it is all over; It mostly has to do with the fact that I have been focused on killing the dragons since I woke up.

That thought process has been consuming me for the longest time.

It probably would be smart to think about that a bit at some point or another. What do I want after it is all over?

"I’ve never thought about it," I reply while looking down at the flames.

"Most slayers don’t," Sylvia says before letting out a small chuckle.

"Really? What about you then?" I ask with curiosity in my voice.

"I want to travel to some of the other continents," Sylvia answers as her eyes linger up towards the sky again.

"You want to see the other continents?" I question.

She nods excitedly.

"I want to see everything the world has to offer," Sylvia answers with excitement in her voice.

A dream to see what else the world has to offer us, how interesting. It sounds simple at first but it is quite the amazing dream to have.

We don’t know how the other continents function or what the cities are like there. Hell, I’ve barely seen anything here yet. I still have so much to see so maybe that would be a good start.

Seeing what lies throughout the lands here.

I stare at her for a few moments.

"I think you’d like traveling too," Sylvia says, breaking the temporary silence.

"I don’t know. I’ve never thought much about traveling to begin with," I reply.

"You’ve already started dummy," Sylvia teases as she smiles.

She points toward the road behind us.

I look back for a moment as I realize she’s right.

I’ve already left behind a lot to travel this path in the first place... The path of a slayer.
