The crackling of the fire fills the silence between us.

For a little while neither of us says anything.

The warm breeze gently blows through the open fields while the sky slowly begins changing shades of orange.

It really is peaceful out here.

I can understand why Sylvia enjoys traveling so much.

"There is one thing I never asked you," Sylvia suddenly says.

"Hm?" I reply.

"Why did you become a slayer?" Sylvia asks with curiosity in her voice.

That question catches me off guard.

Why did I want to become a slayer?

The answer is always obvious to me... I want to kill the dragons who destroyed everything I loved. I lost it all because of them and I’ll never be able to get it back.

"I wanted to kill dragons," I answer honestly.

She doesn’t seem surprised by the answer in the slightest and just continues to listen.

"They destroyed my village and killed everyone I know," I continue on.

"I know," Sylvia responds quietly.

I stare into the fire once again.

"I can’t let that happen to anyone else," I say with more of a serious tone.

"You shouldn’t," Sylvia replies.

I look toward Sylvia.

She meets my eyes without looking away.

"If becoming a slayer is what you truly wanted... Then don’t ever regret making that choice. Just know it’ll always be a dangerous path," Sylvia speaks with a soft tone.

I don’t think I’d ever regret becoming a slayer, not after seeing what they did.

"I’m not going to stop until they’re gone," I say with a bit of anger in my voice.

"I believe you," Sylvia replies as she smiles softly. "But don’t let revenge become the only thing keeping you alive."

Those words linger in my mind.

Is that really what has been pushing me forward?

Has it been the main reason I push myself to survive each encounter...?

Maybe it is... But I’ve met a lot of people who changed that perspective a bit. They all made such a difference in ways I’d never imagine.

They are the people who keep appearing along the road for one reason or another.

It doesn’t feel like I’m walking alone anymore.

~That is a much healthier way of looking at it.

I scratch the back of my head.

I’m not really surprised that you agree with her.

~I agree with her and I think you are finally getting to a better spot, mentally.

A small laugh escapes me.

Sylvia raises an eyebrow.

"What?" Sylvia questions with a bit of a confused look on her face.

"Nothing," I assure her.

"You just laughed about something," Sylvia says as she tilts her head.

"It is nothing. Just enjoying this I guess," I reply with a soft tone.

She laughs quietly before tearing off another piece of bread.

"I’ve got another question," Sylvia says with a playful tone.

"You ask a lot of questions," I reply while looking towards her.

"That’s because you don’t hesitate to answer them," Sylvia teases.

She’s got a point there.

"What kind of slayer do you want to be?" Sylvia asks as she stares at me.

I hadn’t really thought about that.

To me...

A slayer was simply someone who killed dragons.

"I don’t know yet," I answer.

"That’s okay," Sylvia assures me.

"It is?" I question.

She nods.

"You’re still new and have a lot to see before you figure it out," Sylvia answers with a calm tone.

I’ve been constantly trying to figure everything out since I woke up. That is probably why my head constantly feels so full all the time.

Trying to understand the world all at once probably isn’t realistic.

~Nobody can understand the world that easily, otherwise less problems would exist.

That is true. We’d probably have peace throughout the world instead of this war with one another.

Dragons could’ve been helpful to humans but instead this is where we are now.

My thoughts finally die down as the fire continues burning while darkness slowly begins covering the fields around us.

One by one...

Stars begin appearing overhead.

I look up.

I haven’t really been outside at night much, have I?

"You’ve never really looked at them before, have you?" Sylvia asks.

"Not really," I answer without hesitation.

"Why not?" Sylvia questions.

I go silent for a moment.

"I just never had the chance to," I answer while looking up at the stars.

She lies back on the grass.

"Come on," Sylvia says with a soft tone.

"What?" I question with a bit of confusion.

She grabs my arm and pulls me to the ground next to her.

I awkwardly lay down next to her now as we both look up at the stars.

The grass is surprisingly comfortable and honestly this is relaxing.

Neither of us talk after that, we just stare up at the stars.

"It’s a lot bigger than I imagined," I admit.

"The sky?" Sylvia responds.

"The world," I say with a quiet tone.

She smiles.

"Of course it is. You have only seen pieces of it," Sylvia replies before letting out a laugh.

To think I have so much more to see, it is kind of crazy.

"No arguing with you there. I’m sure I’ll see plenty as I help slay the dragons," I say while reaching towards the sky.

I feel her eyes staring at the scars along my hand.

"From that day?" Sylvia asks as she continues to look.

"Yeah," I answer.

She pulls my arm down and looks at them a bit closer.

"They are something that make you unique," Sylvia says with a bigger smile on her face.

"Here I just thought of them as a terrible scar to remind me of the day," I reply with a bit of sadness in my voice.

"That negativity doesn’t help. They prove that you are meant to be here," Sylvia says as she lets go of my arm.

My eyes drift down to my hands as I look at the scars myself. Each one going up my arm.

Maybe she is onto something.
