After that final thought I end up drifting off to sleep.
The night goes by without any dreams or nightmares this time around.
"Kain wake up," A voice calls out my name.
I slowly open up my eyes to the sight of Sylvia standing above me with a bit of a worrisome look on her face.
"What’s going on?" I question while sitting up.
The smell of burning grass and wood plagues the air around me as I start to realize what’s going on. The fields around us are burning for some reason.
"I don’t really know but this isn’t really a good sign," Sylvia responds with a bit of uncertainty in her voice.
Immediately I start to look around for any signs that a dragon was here.
Scorch marks continue to go along the road into the distance... It is definitely a dragon who did all of this. There is also some smoke in the distance.
"We should probably follow the scorch marks," I suggest while placing one hand onto the handle of my sword.
"I was thinking the same thing," Sylvia responds.
With that we both begin to follow the scorch marks along the road. Occasionally I look up towards the sky as we walk.
I can’t believe a damn attack happened while we were asleep... That is quite infuriating to think about after all that peace.
It was too good to be true. I should’ve expected something like this to happen the moment I was relaxing. I’ll find this dragon before it can hurt anyone.
~You need to be prepared for the worst.
Thinking like that isn’t really the smartest thing to do right now. Negative thoughts will just weigh me down if I start going down that path.
~I am not saying you shouldn’t be positive, I’m saying you need to be ready for whatever awaits.
"Kain I’m pretty sure a village isn’t far from here," Sylvia says as she starts to pick up the pace.
As she finishes that sentence I begin to run myself.
No, I won’t let this happen again.
"We won’t let them die," I reply while rushing ahead.
As we run along the road I can slowly hear people screaming in the distance, almost as if the attack is just starting. I can feel the anger building up more and more as we approach.
BA-DUM. BA-DUM.
My heart is starting to race as well but that could just be from all the running... Unless I really am getting that angry about it.
Grip. Grip.
Without realizing it at first I start to notice that my grip around the handle of the sword is quite strong. The anger is subtly taking over.
I need to calm down.
Anger can potentially get me killed or Sylvia if I’m not careful. It also leads to sloppy swordsmanship which I want to avoid at all costs.
Damnit!!! It is hard not to be pissed off about this when I have already gone through this once before.
Everything is happening.
I reach the top of a hill where I can clearly see the village in flames as a dragon is flying above... Still shooting flames out from its mouth.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
My heart begins to beat out of my chest as everything flashes before me.
"Kain! Run!" My mother’s voice echoes throughout the village as another explosion shakes the ground beneath me.
I can see everything happening in front of me all over again as bodies surround me.
No. No. No.
I feel my hands reach my face as I start to panic all over again.
"Help us!!!!" A woman cries out.
The smell of houses burning plagues my nose as I fall to my knees.
~Kain you must calm down. You are reliving the moment again and need to bring yourself back to reality.
Everyone is dying all over again.
Shake. Shake.
"Kain!!" A voice screams my name.
I blink a few times as the surroundings disappear around me and I see the other village before me. Sylvia is also here.
She is standing right in front of me with her hands on my shoulders.
"Kain we need to get over there!!" Sylvia shouts with urgency in her voice.
I just stare back at her for a moment.
"Right. Right. I don’t know what happened," I respond while looking past her.
"Look at me," Sylvia instructs with a serious tone.
I do as she instructs and look back at her again.
"We’ll handle this, okay? Just follow me," Sylvia assures me.
"Okay," I respond quietly.
She turns around after that and begins to run towards the village with her sword out.
~Welcome back to reality Kain. Let’s go assist now.
I don’t respond as I follow behind Sylvia with my sword already drawn. My eyes are already glancing around every direction to see who is alive.
Bodies lay across the ground as we approach the entrance to the village.
I’m starting to understand the dream I had the other night.
How much of that dream is actually going to come true? That is the question I’m stuck with right now while watching this all unfold.
"Kain get back for a moment," Sylvia says as she hides behind one of the burning houses.
Dash!!
I make it to her without getting seen.
"Why are we stopping here?" I question while keeping my voice low.
"A stealth attack would work wonders for us right now," Sylvia responds with a calmer tone than before.
Stealth would help out. I forgot that we don’t have to attack it head on every single time but that’s been my luck lately.
Stealth hasn’t really worked out in my favor so I didn’t get the chance to experience it.
"How do you want to do this then?" I ask while peeking out behind the wall.
I can see the dragon flying above each house as it continues to set them ablaze. Innocent people are continuing to scream as we waste time sitting here.
