With time running out it is probably better to try out something new. The essence manifestation skill might be something I could utilize right about now.

~Perhaps it could be useful.

You aren’t going to tell me how it works or anything?

~Essence manifestation allows you to channel some of the dragons essence into certain buffs that you can utilize. For example, you can channel it into your legs for more speed or your arms for more power.

Should have told me that sooner.

~I have to determine everything based on the situation Kain.

Yeah, whatever.

I finally force the captain to stop pushing me back as I focus on channeling the dragon essence within me.

A strange sensation begins to form within my arms and legs as I slowly start to notice a red aura surrounding my arms; my legs followed not long after that and it felt different.

I can definitely tell with my arms alone how much stronger they currently feel.

Push!!!!

The ground breaks more as I start pushing the captain back the other direction.

Break!!!!

His sword moves out of the way as I finally manage to break through his guard first... The look on his face instantly changes to more of a serious expression.

Pierce!!!!!

But I don’t give him a chance to block the attack this time as I quickly drive my sword through his chest.

Twist!!

With one simple move I cut right through his shoulder and tear my blade out from him as he falls to one knee.

Even more blood spills out onto the ground as he sits there, probably thinking about what just happened.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

My heart is absolutely racing as I continue to channel the essence into my arms and legs.

~It might be best to end this before it takes a toll on your body.

SLASH!!!!

I swing my sword down towards him once again.

SHATTER!!!!!

As he tries to block the attack I break through the blade completely and cut right through his chest. I can see the look of defeat in his eyes as he struggles to move his other arm.

"I have never seen a slayer capable of using dragon essence..." He says weakly as he falls backwards onto the ground.

Step. Step.

I stand over him for a moment.

At the end of the day, his kind made me the way I am. They would never have had me as an enemy if they didn’t kill everyone in my village.

The war could’ve went on how it did without having to deal with me.

I know I’m not invincible or the sole person capable of ending the war... But I sure as hell am capable of killing dragons. That much I’m certain of.

"If I was just a normal slayer with little experience, you probably would’ve killed me when you took it serious," I reply with a cold tone.

At the end of the day, I have only killed a couple dragons. I’ve also barely been in the war that long either.

It is my first real battle as someone who is fighting back against dragons in the war. I don’t expect it to work out this way every time either.

Dragons are strong enemies to have and honestly I hate that having to kill them... But that is just the way it has to be.

Stab!!!!

I put my sword through his throat and twist it, ending his life right there.

All of this... Yet I haven’t seen Xareth once yet.

Sigh.

After letting out a sigh I put my arm down to his chest and begin to absorb the essence once again. This time it feels a bit painful... Almost like the time I first absorbed too much.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

My heart is beating out my chest as I continue to absorb it.

I can handle it.

~One more level and I think you are worthy of a new skill. Your essence is also matching your level, how nice.

What exactly is this "level" you are talking about?

~Take it as a way to justify your experience. The higher you get, the more experienced you are... Along with bonuses.

Bonuses? What are you talking about?

Pain shoots through my chest for a second before completely disappearing.

~Think about how the essence helped you in the battle, something along those lines.

I grip my chest for a moment as I look around.

I’ll take those bonuses if it means less pain than I have to deal with. Absorbing a lot of essence in one go is a pain in the ass.

If I can avoid dealing with the pain portion of it... I’ll be happy.

Suddenly my attention shifts as I hear footsteps rushing towards me in the distance.

Without hesitation I go into the Valtor stance and keep my blade raised.

"Kain!" Sylvia shouts in the distance.

After a few more seconds pass by... I see Sylvia running towards me. Behind her is Aaron.

I lower my sword as they finally reach me.

"Holy shit. Did you kill a captain by yourself?" Aaron asks with a shocked expression on his face.

My eyes glance down at the body and then back up to Aaron.

"Yeah. It wasn’t an easy fight in the slightest," I respond calmly.

Even Sylvia appears to be surprised by the fact that I killed this captain on my own with no help whatsoever.

"I knew you had to be strong!" Aaron shouts with newfound excitement.

"Yeah, you really are incredible Kain," Sylvia chimes in with a bit of joy in her voice.

Both of them starts talking to me about what happened with the outpost but I can feel my mind drifting away from it all.

Why is it I don’t really have the attention for it right now? Do I even care about what happened at the outpost..?

I look slightly past the two of them at the skies to see some of the dragons are still flying about.

"I don’t mean to be rude or cut you guys off here, but what about the remaining dragons?" I question with a serious tone.

"Right! We should probably help push the rest out," Aaron responds with more of a serious tone now as well.

The last thing I heard before zoning out was that a couple of slayers are still alive at the outpost.
