Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power

Chapter 68: On The Aerithel Border [1]

I place my foot down onto the bridge and nothing happens. It just feels like a normal bridge, just it looks terrible. The wood just creaks a bit as I walk across it.

"Seems pretty safe to me!" I shout with some confidence.

She looks at me with a smile still on her face.

"Then I’m coming across!" She shouts back.

I watch patiently as she crosses the wooden bridge, but nothing breaks. A bit of relief goes through my mind as she finally reaches me.

"Shall we continue forward?" Sylvia asks while taking a few steps ahead of me.

"Yes. I think that is the best idea for now," I answer while following behind her.

The sound of us walking along the sand is definitely not something I’m used to, but it sounds kind of nice in a way. Also the temperature difference just from the first few steps onto the desert is insane.

I am also able to see the cobblestone towers a bit more clearly as we continue to get further into the desert.

They have lots of old vines that have grown on them over the years while some of the stone is clearly breaking apart. But at the top I can just barely see someone looking down at us.

I’m guessing they have people stationed in these old towers to watch over everything. It makes sense, especially in a time of war.

The person up there doesn’t look too concerned about us either. They must know that we are just travelers or maybe it’ll be communicated somehow to the kingdom.

With dragons being able to take a human form... I’d expect some sort of caution from everyone.

~A lot of people do have ways to detect it. Mostly through magic.

Honestly I forget about magic since I don’t really rely on it myself. Actually, can I even use magic?

~You kind of use it in a way. Not completely but the essence from the dragons is a form of magic. At least with the flames themselves.

I didn’t know that was magic. It felt like it was just a normal thing for dragons to have, almost like it was natural even.

Poke.

I feel a finger touch the side of my cheek as I turn to see Sylvia getting my attention.

"The towers are even bigger up close," Sylvia says while looking back at me.

"They are. I’m wondering how many people get stationed inside of them," I reply with a bit of curiosity in my voice.

"Honestly like one or two usually," Sylvia says while staring towards the tower.

Only one or two people? I feel like you could easily have about four or five people in those things. Maybe I am just overestimating the tower based off of its appearance.

"Interesting. I would’ve guessed like four or five people," I reply while looking back at the tower again.

"Four or five people? I don’t think there would be a reason to have so many in one," Sylvia says with a bit of a surprised tone.

"It might be a bit crowded now that I think about it," I reply with a bit more of a joking manner.

Sylvia laughs for a moment as we take our gaze away from the towers.

"It’ll be really nice to see Aerithel with you," Sylvia mutters to herself.

"What was that?" I ask curiously.

"Nothing. I just think it’ll be nice to see Aerithel," Sylvia responds with a bit of excitement.

Aerithel is going to be a brand new place for me to see as well... Maybe I’m also excited to see it. Just the dream I had is bothering me about this whole area.

I don’t want to see all of this up in black flames as people are dead across the desert.

It just doesn’t need to be the outcome for all the innocent people who live here.

~What if they aren’t innocent?

I mean... I don’t know.

Dying to dragons just doesn’t seem like a good fate for anyone but maybe some people deserve it. I haven’t seen them yet to know.

We make our way through the desert and eventually find ourselves at the Aerithel border. It is huge.

I can see some towns in the distance but what gives away that this is the border...

My eyes glance over to the giant stone wall in the middle of the road that says "Aerithel Border, Tread cautiously as we are currently in the middle of a war." Which says it all.

It is obvious they added the other part to it recently based on the way it is carved.

The war really is going to put a lot of kings on high alert since they don’t want the kingdoms to collapse from within. That’s what I feel like dragons would do.

Not all of them, just some.

I think they are smart enough to plan an inside attack so that it can’t be defended as easily. Outside attacks give them some time to fight back before the dragons get into the kingdoms.

~That is why a lot of other kings are trying to find ways to advance in the age of magic and tech.

Tech?

~Hmm. My explanation has vanished completely.

That is a bit disappointing. I was hoping to get some information about something new for once. Especially if other kingdoms are trying to utilize this "tech" as you called it.

But I won’t ask further.

"Kain we aren’t that far!" Sylvia shouts with joy.

"We should still be cautious," I advise.

She just looks continues to stare at everything ahead.

"If dragons come, we’ll slay them," Sylvia responds with a cold, yet serious tone.

The joy from her voice instantly changed the moment I talked about being cautious... I don’t think it is a bad thing, just caught me by surprise.

I agree with her. Dragons will be slain if they try to come for the kingdom of Aerithel.

~The probability of that is—

The system suddenly disappears before finishing that sentence.
