Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power
Chapter 70: Towering Walls Of AerithelI look up at the giant walls before me.
The walls really are a lot taller as you get closer and closer... I didn’t expect it to be like this in the slightest. And these walls are just to get through to the actual kingdom itself.
It really is baffling to see something like this after leaving behind everything else. The town of Hyvale and even my village was nowhere near such a thing.
I think it is incredible.
~Walls are built with the mindset of keeping the people safe.
Of course. They will definitely keep people safe until the attacks are handled, that’s for sure.
Sylvia continues walking ahead of me as a giant gate can be seen. A few guards linger around it, probably talking to pass the time.
Not a single one looks our way.
I wouldn’t take my attention away from a conversation until the people arrived too. It’ll still be the same process regardless of when they decide to acknowledge we are coming.
I’d expect them to be a bit more cautious with the war though...
~Not everyone is trying to constantly watch out for danger. I don’t mean that negatively, just that it isn’t a focus for them.
They are guarding the entrance to a kingdom... It should be a focus.
~I think dragons are a lot more straightforward with the attacking lately so it is fine.
I don’t say anything else as I follow behind Sylvia.
"I’ll take care of our entry Kain," Sylvia assures me.
"Thank you," I reply with a genuine tone.
"No need to thank me. It is just easier haha," Sylvia says before letting out a small laugh.
The guards finally notice us coming and they shift their attention towards us. Each one completely watching us like a hawk, like we are the enemy.
They are all wearing a mix of leather and chainmail to protect themselves, but their swords look to be made of silver.
I don’t think they’ll be lasting long if a dragon does attack them.
~The materials needed to provide everyone with the weapons slayers use is expensive. It also requires a lot of mining which not all kingdoms are focused on.
Sigh.
"You two want to enter Aerithel?" The Guard questions with a cautious tone.
"Yes. We’ve traveled for quite awhile to get here," Sylvia answers with a calm tone.
He looks back at the others for a moment before looking towards us again.
"What exactly is your profession and why are you here?" He asks with a more serious tone.
"We are slayers and this is just one of our stops along the way," Sylvia responds.
They whisper amongst themselves about how shocked they are to see slayers are here.
I take it slayers don’t come out this way very often since they are talking about it like that. Makes me wonder how many skip the kingdom here and just go past it.
Or they might just keep the slayer part a secret for some reason. I don’t know why otherwise.
The kingdom feels like a great place to stop before continuing forward since I don’t know where the dragons reside. I’m sure they have a kingdom of their own somewhere.
That might be a perfect question to ask Sylvia about at some point. She at least knows of the kingdoms which is quite useful for me.
"Do you—
Before he can finish speaking, she pulls out a slayer guild badge and shows it to him.
"We both have one if you really need to see them," Sylvia says almost immediately.
"Alright. I think we can open up the gates for you guys then," He replies with a bit of shock still in his voice.
He gestures back to them.
A bunch of chains begin to move as the gates slowly start to go up.
Sylvia looks back at me with a smile and gives me a thumbs up. She is clearly proving that she had it handled.
~I think you found a good companion to travel with.
I’ll say. She is good at figuring things out and can read me like a book apparently.
~You don’t make it very hard. I’d suggest working on that a bit more.
Suggestion noted.
I watch as the gates continue to open until they finally gesture for us to go on through.
We walk through the gates and within seconds I can see lots of different houses in front of us. A small barracks also resides right next to the gate itself which makes sense.
Ahead also appears to be another gate... That means the kingdom is probably divided into specific districts.
~You don’t know much about kingdoms but you know about districts?
Education was pretty split up in the village so I kind of got some random knowledge stored up in my head. My mother explained a lot to me about how kingdoms usually split everything into districts for status.
Not all of it is status but the living quarters are.
We are probably in the beginning district where guards and lower tier citizens live. But it should also have plenty of shops and an inn for travelers to stay at.
~Next would probably be middle class?
Perhaps. I don’t think every kingdom does it the same.
But the main capital usually resides deeper into the kingdom where it is the hardest to reach. The king would never be within reach of the people.
He probably comes down to talk to them all or some sort of middle ground where nothing can happen.
"Kain?" Sylvia calls out.
"Yes?" I question.
"We’ve finally made it inside of Aerithel!" She shouts with excitement.
"That we did," I respond with a small smile forming.
I guess I am kind of happy about this...
She is having quite a strange effect on me. It doesn’t feel like a bad thing yet, but I’m starting to see everything from a different perspective.
"Time to explore a bit before we continue," Sylvia says while grabbing hold of my arm.
