Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power

Chapter 77: The Attacks In Driften [2]

"Fine. I don’t care if you answer," He says.

DASH!!!!

He disappears forward.

I tighten my grip.

CLANG!!!

Our swords collide again.

This time I don’t let him push me backwards.

I shift my foot and redirect some of the force to the side.

His sword slides against mine and the opening appears.

This is my chance.

I thrust my sword towards the gap in his armor.

He twists.

SCRAPE!!!!

My blade slides along the black metal instead of going through it.

I immediately pull away.

That is probably the closest attack I have gotten during this whole fight so far.

"You learn quickly," He mutters.

Is it that obvious that I’m learning as the fight goes on?

This is only continuing to rub me the wrong way. There really is something about him that I can’t really place right now.

I glance towards his weapon again.

A potential slayer is working with the bandits. There is no way he isn’t one with the gear he has or the way he fights. Everything points to him being the exact slayer that was mentioned in Aerithel.

But there’s no way...

"You’re the slayer," I finally say.

Everything around us feels quiet for a moment.

He doesn’t respond.

But he doesn’t need to since the slight shift of his helmet is enough.

He really is the slayer that was on the quest board.

~That would explain quite a bit.

It definitely does. It also makes this fight even more deadly with him being an actual slayer.

The armored man lifts his sword onto his shoulder.

"Former slayer," He speaks up.

Former doesn’t really sound right.

"You don’t just stop being a slayer!" Sylvia shouts from behind me.

CLANG!!!!

I hear another clash.

The man turns his helmet slightly towards her.

"People stop being lots of things," He says with a serious tone.

His attention returns to me.

A slayer is supposed to fight dragons... We’re supposed to protect the people who can’t fight them.

That’s what I was told about when it came down to slayers.

So why the hell is someone who fought dragons attacking a town so damn much.

"Why?" I ask.

He laughs.

"Why what?" He responds.

I grip my sword tighter.

"Why attack them?" I ask with a bit of anger showing in my voice.

He looks towards one of the nearby houses.

The windows are shut and nobody is outside anymore.

"They have something we need. So we’re going to take it," He answers.

People are terrified because these assholes want something?

"That doesn’t answer anything," I say while gripping my sword even tighter.

"It answers enough. Now stop talking kid," He replies.

His sword leaves his shoulder.

I can see his posture change immediately and the casual feeling from before disappears.

He’s actually going to fight now.

My feet shift.

This time I lower myself properly.

One foot moves slightly behind the other as my sword settles into position.

The Valtor Stance.

The armored man’s helmet turns downward as he looks at my footing.

His sword stops moving.

For the first time since we encountered him...

He hesitates.

"Where did you learn that stance?" He asks with a bit of curiosity.

My eyes narrow.

"I made it myself," I answer.

Silence.

Then he laughs.

His sword rises.

"Then let’s see how useful it really is," He says while preparing to attack.

DASH!!!!

He charges.

I move forward at the same time.

CLANG!!!!

Our weapons collide hard enough that the impact rings throughout the street.

I immediately shift my sword and attempt to cut towards his shoulder.

CLANG!

Blocked.

I turn my body and attack again.

CLANG!

Another block.

He is reading all of my attacks which is making this a pain...

The man steps forward.

His knee rises towards my stomach.

I barely twist out of the way.

WHIFF!!

Again... He uses everything when he fights which is making it hard to predict how he is going to attack.

I swing towards his leg while his knee is still raised.

He jumps backwards and sand kicks up underneath his boots as he lands.

I don’t think he expected that so that’s the right direction.

He can predict basic sword attacks but mixing my targets is making him react more.

Humans have habits just like dragons.

The armored man suddenly changes how he’s holding his sword.

Both hands grip the handle as he raises it beside his head.

Why does that look familiar?

~It resembles a stance.

Which stance is the question.

He takes a slow breath.

Then his entire presence changes. The pressure is nothing like it is with dragons but it is definitely a noticeable change.

He’s waiting for me now... Just like I was waiting for him earlier.

This bastard is trying to bait me.

I remain still.

A few seconds pass while neither of us moves.

"You’re more cautious than most beginners," He says.

It kind of pisses me off that he knows I’m not that experienced... But that is not something I can change instantly.

I remain silent this time.

The armored man suddenly disappears from where he was standing.

DASH!!!!

My eyes widen.

Left!

I turn.

CLANG!!!!

His sword crashes against mine.

The force is completely different from before.

My arms shake.

Before I can recover, he twists the blade and steps past me.

SLASH!!!!

Pain immediately shoots across my side.

I jump away.

Drip. Drip.

Blood falls onto the sand.

He got a pretty good cut across me.

I look down towards the wound, it isn’t deep but it definitely says a lot.

~He changed his attack at the last second.

I noticed.

That movement... He showed me one attack and used another.

A feint.

Humans can do that pretty well.

I look towards him again.

He’s already back in position.

"Dragons won’t teach you that," He says with a serious tone.

My eyes narrow.

That’s probably why no one has ever caught him or killed him. This asshole knows exactly what he is doing.

The bandits were never the problem to begin with... It was always him.

"Kain!" Sylvia shouts.

"I’m fine," I answer without looking away.

The armored man chuckles.

"Good. I’d be disappointed if that was enough to end the fight," He says with excitement.

My grip tightens.

I’m starting to understand why Sylvia warned me about fighting people.

A dragon will kill me because it’s stronger and just has pure hatred towards humans.

A human might kill me because they convinced me to make the wrong move or because it can understand the weakness we have.

I wipe the blood from my side with my free hand.

The wound isn’t going to stop me.

But the armored man raises his sword again.

I settle back into my stance.

This time...

I won’t let him control the fight.
