I look up to see that my sword didn’t go through the armor in the slightest.

That is—

WHAM!!!

My feet lift off of the ground as I watch everything slowly disappear in front of me.

I look down to see I’m flying through the air.

Stopping myself before I hit something would probably be the best idea... But how can I do this? My sword isn’t in my hands anymore.

~What if you try using the flames you would’ve used from the sword but have it push you down?

That’ll hurt like hell, but it might be something that keeps me from getting hurt worse... Or maybe it’ll be the dumber decision to make.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

I can hear my heartbeat getting louder and louder as I continue to soar through the skies.

Breathe in, breathe out.

A strange sensation starts to flow into my hands and for a moment I can see a flicker of light.

Come on. I need this.

Flicker!!!

Come on!!!!

Flicker!!!!

Flames immediately burst from my hands and shoot me down into the ground.

CRASH!!!! CRUMBLE!!!!

The ground continues to break underneath me for a bit as I tumble backwards a few times. Eventually I stop just before a tree... The pain throughout my body is pretty intense but it isn’t enough.

I slowly push myself up before leaning back against the tree.

Fights are bound to be bloody. I’m lucky I even survived that attack... Why did I even go in?

This mindset really is going to get me killed if I am not careful. The other slayers are still up there fighting the dragon, but I just was being selfish.

The soul of that dragon is what plagued my mind in the moment.

Cough. Cough.

"That was dumb," I say out loud without thinking.

Blood drips down my mouth and the wound across my chest starts to feel worse.

Armor is probably something I should be investing in as well. These clothes have just been torn repeatedly throughout my battles lately.

~You aren’t focusing on the pain, that is smart.

Ignoring it is keeping me from passing out... I think.

ROARRR!!!!

The dragon cries out in the distance as the fight wages on. I can hear the clashing of the swords against its armor.

I look ahead just in time to see one of the magic infused spears breaking through the armor like it is nothing. It completely breaks apart around the chest of the dragon.

Green blood is just spilling out all over the place as the dragon collapses onto the ground.

Patience.

The very thing I needed to have the most.

It got me hurt twice in one fight which is not something that usually happens to me. Nearly died, in fact.

Footsteps come rushing towards me.

I focus back on the direction of them and quickly notice that it is a couple of the slayers, followed by Sylvia.

She is definitely going to give me some grief for what just happened. I kind of deserve it after rushing in like I did... After I just said I need to think differently about the fight.

~I think your mind is a mess after everything that’s happened to you lately Kain. A break wouldn’t be the worst idea.

A break.

Those words stick with me while I wait around for the others to reach me.

My vision starts to fade away as everything goes black around me... I lost consciousness in the end.

It almost feels like I’m floating.

I open my eyes to see darkness is still all around me, not a single thing is in sight.

This is unfamiliar. I don’t think I’ve ever been in such a place before. It is quite strange... Especially if this is supposed to be a place for the dead.

Before I can try to do anything, I open my eyes again to the sight of Sylvia next to me.

Bump! Bump!

The wagon goes over a few rocky parts of the road as we continue traveling.

So we are still heading back to the fort? That doesn’t explain the strange darkness that engulfed me moments ago.

~Strange darkness?

Huh. I guess you didn’t see anything that I did which makes sense. Yeah, it was pure darkness and it felt like I was floating.

~Interesting.

"Kain?" Sylvia calls out my name as she looks down at me.

"Yeah?" I reply weakly.

Wow my voice is not sounding too great right now.

At least I know I wasn’t out that long since we aren’t back yet. We only killed one dragon though?

Shouldn’t there be a lot more than the one that we took down. That felt a little too easy for what happened. Maybe I’m just overthinking it right now.

"You scared me back there."

"It wasn’t intentional."

"Well, you should listen to me next time."

I can see the obvious concern on her face.

"I’ll do better with listening to you next time."

She lets out a small laugh after that.

"Good. I don’t want to see something happen to you in the battlefield like this again."

"I’ll do my best not to get hurt again," I assure her.

She smiles before going quiet again.

The rest of the ride back to the fort is quiet after that, mostly just me enjoying the comfort of her lap as we make our way back.

Some conversations did happen between some of the other slayers that I could hear, but it wasn’t anything serious. Mostly just them talking about this being the normal outcome.

Slayers have a high mortality rate out here because they tend to think like me I guess. Let me just rush them on my own since I killed some dragons... Yeah, great idea.

I’m starting to understand it better.

This time I actually mean it. I won’t be charging in by myself like I did the last time... Even if I need the strength from the dragon essence.

It isn’t worth dying for.
