Chapter 1285: Chapter 1264: Who Am I
"Damn it!" Feeling he’d been toyed with, Xiao Lin swore under his breath. "You know that’s not what I’m asking!"
"It’s not impossible to neutralize the weak point in your lower abdomen. Didn’t Xiao Zhenfeng ever tell you? He should be very clear on how to resolve that weakness." Seeing Xiao Lin stunned, the man seemed to realize something as well. "You can resolve it well enough when the attack cuts in from lower left to right, but when it comes from left to left in the same direction, you’re helpless. Are you really left-handed?"
The man clearly spelled out the root of Xiao Lin’s weakness. His expression was like, I knew it all along, as he stared at Xiao Lin. The latter glanced at his own left hand, blank as an innocent child. From as far back as he could remember, he had eaten with his left hand, written with his left hand, trained martial arts with his left hand. If that still didn’t make him left-handed, then why did his body instinctively use his right hand to defend? Wouldn’t the left hand be more convenient?
Xiao Lin had never considered this question. "Why are you always trying to sow discord between me and my father? I can clearly feel your hatred for the Xiao Family now."
"Hate?" The man shook his head. Just then someone barged in, whispered a few words into Liu Yi’s ear, then hurriedly left. "Young Master Xiao, I can’t stay any longer. As for the answer you want, why not go ask that woman yourself? You won’t find any answers from me. Of course, I also won’t let you go just because you’re from the Xiao Family. Ye Lushou is my hostage. Please finish what you have on hand as soon as possible. My patience is limited."
Liu Yi followed right behind the person who had just come in, heading toward the back of the courtyard and going straight upstairs, leaving Xiao Lin alone.
The rain! At this moment it stopped abruptly, only the occasional patter of dripping sounds rang out, but that was just water still falling. The empty first floor was almost devoid of people. Xiao Lin walked out of the courtyard; the door was open. The scent rushing toward him was the fresh fragrance of grass after the rain. He took a deep breath, then slowly stepped out the door.
He had no idea what could have made that man so alarmed. Though nothing showed on his face, Xiao Lin could feel his tension in his gait. He couldn’t shake Liu Yi’s last words from his mind—telling him to go back and ask a woman. Heh, how long had it been since he’d seen that woman?
Xiao Lin shook his head. Calling the mother who bore him "that woman," he was probably the only one who would do that. To that woman, she was merely the person who gave Xiao Zhenfeng a son. That woman was not Xiao Zhenfeng’s lawful wife, so his status as heir hadn’t come easily either. He remembered the words she’d said to him most often: if you can’t become the heir, then don’t bother coming back to see me. Yet in reality, even after he became the heir, he still never had the chance to go back and see her.
Without realizing it, Xiao Lin had already walked out of the woods and was standing before the platform, gazing at the whitening sky in the distance. He let out a long breath. This time, it seemed he still hadn’t gotten the answer he wanted. But it also felt like he had grasped something—some fleeting thing that flashed and vanished. Liu Yi had definitely given him a hint; he just hadn’t caught it.
"Going down the mountain now will be very dangerous." Dan Ning appeared at Xiao Lin’s side—not suddenly, but as if he had been waiting there for a long time. One look at the wetness on Xiao Lin’s shoulders and he knew. "Those people have regrouped for another attack, but they don’t seem to have the guts to enter my turf. If you go out now, you’re walking into a trap."
"When did Liu Yi join the Assassin Group?"
"It’s been a while. He only suddenly showed up when I was old enough to understand things. As soon as he entered the Assassin Group, he became a core figure. Making him your opponent is more than enough reason to die." Dan Ning wasn’t lying. In fact, he himself didn’t really know Liu Yi’s origins. It was just that Liu Yi appeared exactly when he was supposed to appear.
"Ten years ago?"
"A bit earlier than that."
"Ah!"
Xiao Lin shoved both hands into his pockets and started down. "Hey, didn’t I just tell you there are people down there..." Dan Ning grabbed Xiao Lin’s arm with one hand, frowning. "You don’t even have a weapon. Are you looking to die?"
"Let me borrow yours." As he spoke, his left hand clapped Dan Ning’s left shoulder, while his right hand had already slipped into Dan Ning’s clothes, drawing two curved daggers from his back.
"Not those!" The moment Dan Ning saw his beloved toys being lifted just like that, he naturally refused to let it slide.
"I’m just borrowing them for now. I’ll give them back when you return my spikes."
As soon as he finished speaking, his figure had already drifted several meters away. Even if Dan Ning wanted to cut him off, he couldn’t.
An unseen opponent is terrifying; an opponent whose situation you can clearly see is pitiful. The Assassins Xiao Lin encountered could be said to be somewhere between the two.
The ones who want to kill are even more nervous than the ones about to be killed, which is almost laughable, but as someone about to be killed, he still gripped the freshly robbed dagger with both hands, took a deep breath, and headed for that one and only exit. He wasn’t usually this reckless, but there was too much pent up inside him that needed venting, and since someone had come knocking at his door, naturally he had no intention of turning them away.
His slow steps moved closer to the encirclement, bit by bit. In the end, these people still didn’t want to get tangled up with the "Wagangnai" crowd, so they’d set their perimeter further out—just one step away, close enough that whatever happened had nothing to do with them. If they tried to intervene, it would be no different from going up against "Wagangnai," and that was a risk those people were not going to take.
The second wave was obviously much better equipped. Judging by headcount, there were a lot more of them spread out across different sectors; slipping through easily now was pretty much impossible.
The man striding straight ahead suddenly slipped sideways and vanished into thin air right before the Assassins’ eyes. A dull, crisp sound exploded in the air, the sound of a blade piercing flesh. The dagger in Xiao Lin’s hand had already sunk into a man’s back, driving straight into the depths of his heart. One hand clamped over his mouth; with a hard twist, his neck snapped.
Xiao Lin wasn’t an Assassin, so cutting hearts out wasn’t his style. After finishing one man, he shifted behind another. Using the same technique, he took out five or six in a row. The ones closest to him dropped silently into their own spreading pools of blood.
The closer it gets to dawn, the darker the night becomes. From above you might not notice, but buried in this blackness, that pale whitening at the horizon is nothing but an illusion.
With another clean, efficient move, a man had his mouth covered and neck broken. Xiao Lin didn’t keep advancing, but planted himself firmly in place, his ears twitching slightly as he listened to the situation around him.
His hearing was razor sharp. He suddenly hunched down and edged forward. As he turned past a clump of bushes, a gleaming blade hacked out from the corner, and right after that, bullets sprayed like a storm of feathered arrows. Xiao Lin jerked back, rolled across the ground, slipped to the side, and ducked under a tree canopy.
"Fuck! Everyone be careful!" someone cursed under his breath in the dark. The others hesitated for a moment, then all snapped to full alert and converged toward the direction of the gunfire.
Going into a fight without full focus was the same as handing yourself over to the Grim Reaper. No one wants to die; everyone wants to be the one still standing at the end.
Footsteps rustled. Hiding beneath the tree canopy, Xiao Lin let out a cold laugh in his heart. That wild burst of gunfire just now could be used as bait to draw the others toward him, saving him the trouble of hunting them down one by one. Once he was sure they were moving his way, that would be his moment to seize the initiative.
Like a wolf moving through the night, Xiao Lin took out another man as they drew near, then slipped away from under the canopy without a sound, shifting to the left front. His cold gaze locked onto the Assassin who had just stepped into the spot where he’d been standing.
He retraced two steps, and the dagger in his hand drove into the man’s back the exact same way. One hand covered the man’s mouth; with a hard twist of the dagger in his left hand, the heart ruptured. Time to go meet the Grim Reaper.
One strike, one kill. Unerring precision. Absolutely no mercy.
Killing can be addictive. After you’ve seen blood spray enough times, the smell of it clings to you. The moment you catch its scent, a strange excitement stirs. That’s what it feels like for an Assassin. But even if you’re not an Assassin, anyone who lives their life on a knife’s edge will feel that same thrill—it just depends on how well you can control it.
In the blink of an eye, four people were dead. The last two in the rear were getting closer and closer to where the bodies lay. The fact that the ones ahead of them had already become corpses left them momentarily stunned. Other than that gunshot from earlier, they hadn’t heard a thing—hadn’t felt the slightest need to be on guard.
There was no time to think, no time to warn the others. All they felt was a chill like ice creeping up their spines. Xiao Lin had already appeared behind them. He grabbed one man by the hair, and the dagger in his right hand pressed against the man’s carotid artery.
As he severed the artery, his left hand released and shoved forward. The corpse slammed into the man in front.
When the dagger was pulled free, it tore the wound a second time. Even though the man was already dead, as the blade came out, it still ripped open his trachea and artery, and blood gushed out in a hot torrent. He tried to call for help, but his shredded throat could only push out a faint, cold hiss.
The man who was startled by the sudden weight crashing into his back was just about to curse when he caught a whiff of an abnormal, pungent smell. He froze mid-step and didn’t even dare turn his head. He only felt the heavy weight on his shoulder slowly slide off to the side and hit the ground with a dull thud. From the corner of his eye he saw the body lying there. He sucked in a sharp breath. The danger was now within mere feet.
The tip of his foot flicked, hooking the corpse on the ground and flinging it backward. At the same time, he lunged forward, rolling twice to open up some space between himself and that icy presence at his back, trying to find a better position to evade.
Seeing this, Xiao Lin didn’t pause for even a heartbeat. He took a nimble step forward and sprang into the air, his right leg whipping down like a gust of wind and slamming into the man. His heel struck square into the left side of the man’s chest. Crack. A sickening noise burst from the point of impact. His powerful right leg pressed down hard on the man’s left chest. Xiao Lin’s body rose again, and his left foot came down squarely on the man’s skull, driving it downward. In an instant, the man was forced to his knees.
