Lirien had already climbed down from the tree branch and stood right at the edge of the clearing when she saw Evan suddenly turn to look in her direction, and it startled her.

His gaze was calm, but his eyes were strange, glowing with an odd, unnatural light that seemed capable of piercing through anything, as if he could see straight into her soul. It sent a chill down her spine, made her shudder involuntarily.

It took her a second to realize his gaze wasn’t actually directed at her, but at something else, something behind her.

Then she heard him speak those words, and a sudden sense of dread washed over her. She immediately turned around, looking toward the center of the clearing.

The strange flower was still there.

For a moment, she wondered what he was referring to.

’Could he really be talking to the plant’

That was her first thought, but what happened next changed it immediately, because the ground beneath them started to vibrate, the air turned strangely still, and the storm, already weak in this area, stopped hitting the region entirely. It was as if something had appeared here that had suppressed everything, including her own mind, since she suddenly felt struck by an indescribable terror.

"What’s happening?" she muttered, her mind starting to hurt, a pain still faint but seeming to grow more intense with every passing second.

At some point her legs gave out, and she sank to the ground, head in her hands.

Her mind grew more and more confused by the second, strange voices starting to echo inside her.

Without her noticing, violet veins had begun appearing across her skin, and right as she felt herself about to break, something touched her head.

The instant she felt that touch, all the pain vanished as if it had never been there, the confusion gone along with the voices.

She opened her eyes and immediately noticed a figure in front of her, crouched down, pulling his hand back from her head.

The strange boy’s voice rang in her ears as he stood and walked past her.

"If I were you, I’d get as far away from here as possible, as fast as you can. What’s about to happen isn’t something you can hope to endure." Those were the words he said as he advanced toward the center of the clearing, completely ignoring her.

It confused her, but it also irritated her a little.

How could he leave her here in this state?

She wanted to complain, but she understood this wasn’t the situation to waste time on something like that.

She decided to listen to him this time, and with difficulty, she stood up and moved away.

Once she was outside the clearing, she turned and watched the back of the boy as he walked calmly toward the enormous plant.

He’d told her to get away because something was about to happen here. She didn’t know what, but she understood it wasn’t anything good.

She wanted to tell him she could lend a hand, but the reality of her own meager strength hit her immediately, and she understood that, realistically, she’d only be more of a liability than anything else, which killed any thought of helping.

’Come on, Lirien. Why are you acting like you’re about to die? Everything will be fine... at least, I hope so.’

Those comforting words she told herself seemed to have a slight effect.

She moved far enough away that she would no longer be caught in whatever was about to happen, but not so far that she could no longer see.

She wanted to see with her own eyes what that plant was. She understood it was behind all the misfortune she’d encountered recently, and very likely behind whatever had happened to Percival. She wanted to understand what they were dealing with.

Evan, already close to the center of the clearing, looked up at the tall plant. What he was seeing wasn’t limited to its physical appearance, he could see beyond that, could see the growing void energy flowing through it.

It was waking up.

’Hmm. Seems like it doesn’t have any sentinels left,’ Evan thought.

He’d killed that other man before, then Percival, both transformed into those strange creatures the system called Sentinels. He understood they were servants of this thing, and now that he’d eliminated them and no more were appearing, it was clear that this Avatar of the Abyss god was finally going to make its move.

And sure enough, in the next instant, exactly that happened.

The plant’s presence in front of him began to swell, growing stronger.

At first it hovered around B-rank, then climbed past it, reaching A-rank in an instant. But it didn’t stop there. It kept climbing until it hit its peak, and only then did it seem to stop, not because it had finished, but because it seemed unable to go any further.

Just as Evan was bracing for a possible attack, something happened. A voice, feminine, suddenly echoed through the area.

"You. Why are you interfering with me?" The voice was calm, but there was something wrong with the feminine tone, something unnatural that made it uncomfortable to hear.

"Why am I interfering? Isn’t it obvious? Because I want to eliminate you," Evan said.

The voice didn’t respond. Seconds passed, and just as Evan thought the exchange, brief as it was, had ended, it came back.

"Eliminate me? Strange... Why would you do such a thing? It is not natural. It is not natural at all. Attacking your own kind is meaningless. What is the point of fighting among ourselves when we still have a comon enemy restricting us here?"

The voice sounded genuinely confused, almost lost, which seemed to throw Evan off as well.

’What does she mean by unnatural...? Wait, could it be that...’

"You stupid weed. Did rotting away in this place for so long finally destroy what little brain you managed to develop?" Seraphine’s voice rang out, and her figure appeared beside him an instant later, looking at the plant in front of her with an expression of derision and superiority.

At her appearance, the voice reacted as if caught completely off guard.

"This presence... you... how are you here? You should be dead."
