SSS Awakening: I am the First Legendary Mage

Another message caught Alex’s attention, this one from Stefan. Stefan asked whether Alex had also received a message about the Assessment and whether he had any idea what it was supposed to mean.

Alex looked at the System notification again and realized that the thirty minutes had passed much faster than he expected. Only ten minutes remained until the Assessment.

He stared at the screen while several questions formed in his mind. Who would assess them, what exactly would they be judged on, and how would the result affect them?

Alex already knew that everyone would be assessed, as Stefan had probably not defeated a Street Boss yet, and he wouldn’t have completed the Tutorial Quest 6, so if Stefan got the System message like Alex, then everyone must’ve received it. Alex did not want to underestimate Stefan, but even Alex had barely defeated the Wild Orc Leader, and that had only been possible because the leader had spent much of the fight focused on completing the portal.

That meant Stefan’s chances of completing the tutorial quest 6 were probably low for now.

He looked toward Ava, who was still sitting beside him and cutting the apple into smaller pieces. After thinking about it for a moment, Alex finally asked, "Do you know anything about this ’Assessment’ mentioned in the System message?"

Ava’s expression became slightly nervous before she answered. "Everyone received a message about an hour ago saying that an Assessment would happen soon. That’s all we know."

Alex nodded and immediately messaged Stefan, telling him that he had no idea what the Assessment was about either. However, it was clearly going to be dangerous, so Stefan and the others should stay prepared.

Alex also told him about the blue crosses on the map. They were not Street-level Bosses as they had initially assumed, but portals connected to somewhere unknown, and monsters with enough intelligence could conquer those portals, connect them to their own world, and use them as invasion points.

Stefan needed to deal with his blue cross as quickly as possible. Alex did not believe that every blue cross had a Street-level Boss, but there was no reason to leave them alone and take unnecessary risks.

No reply came from Stefan. He likely already knew about the blue crosses and had gone to deal with his own. Roan must have told Tina and the others about the portals, allowing someone to pass the information to Stefan.

Alex put his phone back into his inventory and looked through the System notifications. He needed to level up quickly and get healed, because there was still too much left to do and he could not afford to waste time.

First, he checked his spell level-ups and found that his progress was quite good. Mana Cable and Elastic Thread had both reached Level 9, and he could feel they were just a hair breath away from reaching Level 10. At Level 10, there was a high chance they could fuse as they seemed compatible to him. That would free up one of his spell slots.

Alex could still feel the lightning-element rune inside his heart. It should have disappeared after he lost consciousness and could no longer hold it together, but it remained there, slowly disappearing instead of instantly, which proved he could now use Will to harden the rune and potentially obtain the Mana Circuit Spell.

Because of that, he wanted to clear one spell slot as soon as possible. If he could evolve and fuse Mana Cable and Elastic Thread, he would have the space needed to obtain Mana Circuit and finally evolve his Class.

Alex then checked the spell that had reached Level 10 during the previous battle. Advanced Body Reinforcement Spells.

Spells always received an ’Advanced’ version as their basic upgrade, so he was curious about what would happen when an Advanced spell evolved again. What about be its basic upgrade?

Alex studied the available choices while continuing to train Mana Cable and Elastic Thread. Both spells were already close to evolution, so he wanted to push them over the threshold as quickly as possible.

Alex looked at the evolution options carefully. He was in a hurry, and the Assessment was getting closer, but he could not afford to choose carelessly because the spell he selected could remain important to him for a long time.

Superior Body Reinforcement Spell was obviously the direct upgrade to Advanced Body Reinforcement Spell. Alex could already tell that it would be much stronger, and he also felt an instinctive liking toward it that was difficult to explain.

After thinking about it, Alex realized that the feeling was probably coming from his SSS rank Origin Spell Physique itself. That meant, learning it might teach him something important about how magic actually worked. He had previously felt this feeling when he learned Will, and understood runes, so if he was feeling it now, this spell was important in some way.

Mana Heart Strengthening Spell was also an extremely useful option. It would likely teach him how to strengthen his heart more effectively.

The important thing to understand was that reinforcement spells did not simply make something stronger without changing how it functioned. They reinforced the quality of the thing itself, so if Alex reinforced electrical signals in the neurons, the electricity traveling through them would become stronger, while reinforcing his bones would make them harder and reinforcing his eyes could improve how far and clearly they could see.

That meant Mana Heart Strengthening Spell would probably allow him to improve the quality of his mana heart. If it could help his heart compress and store more mana, then for someone like Alex, who was putting almost everything into mana, it would be an extremely valuable spell.
