Moon gently placed Selene on the bed and tucked her in under the blanket.
He straightened up carefully and turned toward the door.
Before he could walk away, he felt a small tug at his clothes.
Selene’s fingers closed around the fabric of his shirt. Her face didn’t change, she was clearly still asleep, but somehow, was able to feel him leaving.
Moon paused.
His eyes drifted down to her sleeping face and his mouth curved into a small smile.
He crouched beside the bed and gently peeled her fingers off his shirt, one at a time, delicately and patiently, trying hard to avoid waking her up. Her hand relaxed once he had freed the fabric. He tucked her arm back beneath the blanket.
He watched her sleep for a full minute before his phone buzzed in his pocket.
Moon pulled it out to find a message incoming from Tom.
’Come to the main lounge when you’re up. Someone wants to meet you.’
Moon’s brows rose slightly. Tom wasn’t the type to interrupt his recovery for anything trivial. If there was a visitor important enough for Tom to bring them to the estate personally, it was someone Moon didn’t know well. Or someone Moon didn’t know at all.
He glanced one more time at Selene.
She was still asleep.
He turned and left the room.
The door closed behind him with a soft click.
The moment the door closed, Selene’s eyes fluttered open.
Her fingers twitched against the empty space where her hand had been holding his shirt. An unhappy expression crossed her face for a brief moment before her eyes closed again.
She fell back into sleep.
Moon made his way through the estate’s corridors toward the main lounge Tom had specified.
The Glassy estate was massive. He had spent the better part of a week here now, but he was still finding new rooms and unexpected passages. Tom had built the place with comfort, luxury and space for new things in mind.
When Moon reached the main lounge, he stopped in the doorway.
Then a small smile crossed his face.
The visitor sitting in one of the chairs across from Tom wasn’t a stranger.
Sierra.
The elemental archer wore a comfortable set of dark green traveling clothes, clearly made of expensive fabric.
Currently, Sierra looked like a normal woman, without any air of Ascender power around her.
She turned toward the door as he entered.
Her face softened into a gentle smile, like the aunt next door that treated the kids of the neighborhood like her own children.
"How have you been? I heard your injuries were a little grievous."
Moon walked into the lounge and nodded his head in polite greeting.
"I can’t complain. Especially now that I have such a distinguished guest visiting me during my illness."
Sierra’s smile widened by a small margin.
"I would have come earlier, but I didn’t want to interrupt your recovery. I’ve also been flooded with paperwork since the tournament. Ascender-tier battles produce truly obscene amounts of forms." She turned towards Tom, "You can ask him about it."
Tom sighed in response, "Talk to me about it...once I become the strongest person in the world. I will make sure to eradicate paperwork from existence, I will burn every last one left. The world will be a better place after that."
Moon chuckled before settling into the chair beside Tom’s. "The paperwork sounds worse than the actual fighting."
"You would be surprised."
"I don’t think I would. I’ve seen some of the paperwork on Tom’s desk. Whoever designed those forms hates every human being who has ever awakened."
Sierra actually laughed a little before composing herself.
"You are much wittier than I thought. The Association has you described as focused and reserved."
"I try to save the mouth for people who can appreciate it. Most Association workers don’t make the cut." Moon smiled.
Sierra smiled back.
Tom watched the exchange from his own chair, arms crossed, a satisfied grin slowly spreading across his face.
’This kid has the same wits as me.’ He thought in amusement. Moon had been reserved during their first meeting.
But as they spent more time together, Moon began to open up.
Watching him be this open with Sierra surprised him.
’It seems like he has a good foundational trust of her.’ Tom thought before glancing at Sierra.
’He’s good with the ladies.’ Tom’s grin widened.
The kid was going to be very useful in a lot of very expensive rooms once he was fully recovered.
"Let’s get to the crux of the matter. I came here today with a few things in mind."
Sierra’s expression turned serious as her eyes met Moon’s directly.
Moon straightened slightly in his chair. His expression mirrored hers.
"Firstly." Sierra began. "Tom told me about what happened with Klein."
Her eyes flicked briefly to Tom, who smiled and gave her a small nod, confirming what she was about to say. She turned back to Moon.
"Thank you for saving my life."
Moon shook his head.
"I dare not take the credit. I simply relayed what I saw. It was Uncle Tom who did the work."
Sierra’s smile returned, softer this time.
"Humble as well. Uncle Tom should learn a thing or two from you." Sierra teased.
Tom scoffed from his chair.
"Uncle? I’m still in my prime, thank you very much. Don’t slander a youthful man like that. I am at most a very handsome older brother."
Sierra ignored him and kept her attention on Moon.
"I heard from Tom that you have about a week left before you’re back in top condition. Is that right?"
"Give or take."
"Are you able to cast skills?"
"I can cast minor skills without trouble. Nothing that draws significant mana in a single burst. But basic casts should be fine."
He tilted his head slightly.
"Why do you ask?"
"I heard you’re competent with the sword. That much has been on every after-action report I’ve read. But I was curious. Can you use the bow too?"
