SSS-Class Zombie Overlord: My Undead Legion Evolves Infinitely!
Chapter 60: Matter Of PrideSeven figures stood near the edge of the enormous crater, their gazes directed toward the vast depression that had replaced the once-renowned monster territory.
Six of them were naturally the remaining members of the Seven Radiant Stars, while the final figure stood slightly ahead of them, his long white robes swaying gently beneath the crimson sky.
Christine stood beside him, her expression carrying a hint of seriousness as she explained the details she had gathered over the past few days.
"According to the reports we received, Jake Mercer released nearly two hundred and forty kilotons worth of electricity during his final battle with the White Serpent," Christine said, her voice remaining calm despite the absurdity of the number.
"Two hundred and forty kilotons..." One of the Radiant Stars couldn’t help but mutter beneath his mask.
"That’s not something a D-rank awakener should be capable of."
Another star scoffed softly. "He was never a normal D-rank to begin with. That bastard always had something hidden up his sleeves."
Christine didn’t reply to the insult. Instead, she continued explaining, "The energy released was concentrated into a relatively small area. From the reports of the surviving scouts, the impact completely devastated the surrounding terrain."
Her gaze shifted toward the crater. "It wasn’t simply an explosion. The ground itself was practically decimated."
The envoy remained silent as he stared ahead. The enormous crater stretched across the land, its edges still covered with cracks that extended several meters away from the center.
The earth had been scorched black in many areas, while faint traces of heat continued to permeate from beneath the surface.
However, there was also something that the Radiant Stars couldn’t help but find valuable.
"The environmental changes have already begun," she continued. "The energy released by Jake appears to have affected the surrounding land. According to our scouts, traces of unusual minerals and mutated herbs have already started appearing."
"Then this place has become a natural resource point," one of the stars said immediately, making her nod in agreement.
Natural resource points were rare regions where, due to special circumstances, natural resources, herbs, minerals, or materials possessing unique attributes could gradually form over time. The formation of such a place was usually extremely difficult to predict.
Sometimes, it required years and sometimes decades.
In particularly fortunate circumstances, the appearance of a powerful monster or an intense battle could alter the surrounding environment enough to accelerate the process.
For Valeria City, this was nothing short of a blessing. A resource point of this size could potentially provide the city with an enormous amount of materials in the future.
If managed properly, it could even allow Valeria City to develop into one of the strongest cities within the surrounding region.
Naturally, the Radiant Stars understood this better than anyone. This was precisely why their expressions had become somewhat ugly after hearing about their dismissal.
They had spent nearly a decade protecting this city. Now, after all those years, the association had decided to send an envoy and remove them from the situation.
Even the resource point that could potentially become one of the greatest benefits of their efforts would no longer belong to them.
"Such a waste..." one of the stars muttered under his breath.
Christine heard it, but she chose not to respond and simply turned her attention toward the envoy.
The man had remained silent throughout the entire conversation. Unlike the other Radiant Stars, he didn’t seem interested in the resource point, nor did he appear bothered by the enormous crater before him.
Instead, he slowly brought his hands together near his chest. There was a small gap between his palms as they faced one another.
Then, the envoy closed his eyes and concentrated as a faint yellow light gradually emerged between his palms.
The light was timid, barely bright enough to illuminate his fingers. Christine watched the strange phenomenon with curiosity.
"Sir?"
The envoy seemingly ignored her voice and muttered in a low voice. "Singing Trail of Monsters."
Immediately, a faint sound echoed through the surroundings. The yellow light between his palms suddenly grew slightly brighter before jumping out from between them.
It floated in the air like a tiny ball of light, moving left and right as though it were searching for something.
The envoy relaxed his hands and quietly stared at it.
Singing Trail of Monsters was a D-rank variation move that was taught exclusively by the association to its envoys.
Since envoys were often dispatched to investigate and handle dangerous monsters, the Association had naturally provided them with specialized abilities that could help them locate their targets.
This particular move allowed the user to summon a small ball of light that could retrace the movements of monsters that had recently passed through the area.
The ball would follow the traces left behind by the monster while emitting a faint melody, allowing the user to follow its path.
Naturally, there was another variation known as Singing Trail of Humans, which functioned in a similar manner but could only trace the movements of humans.
Together, the two variations allowed the Association’s envoys to investigate an area far more efficiently than ordinary awakeners.
The small yellow ball suddenly emitted another note.
*Ding.*
It floated a bit forward before emitting yet another note.
*Ding.*
The ball slowly moved toward the forest as the envoy followed behind it without hesitation.
The Radiant Stars exchanged glances before eventually following him as well. Although none of them said anything, their unwillingness was obvious.
They had already been dismissed. As such, there was no reason for them to be particularly enthusiastic about assisting the envoy.
Nevertheless, none of them dared to disobey.
The authority of the association wasn’t something they could casually ignore.
The further they traveled, the denser the trees became. The yellow ball continued floating ahead, emitting a soft melody every few seconds as it retraced the trail left behind by the monster.
Christine remained near the envoy as they walked forward. She had several questions in her mind, but she hesitated before eventually speaking. "Sir, may I ask something?"
Hearing her voice, the envoy turned his head slightly.
"Why are we going to attack the Eagle monster before dealing with the White Serpent?"
Christine brought her hands closer to her ample chest as she spoke, her expression carrying genuine curiosity.
"According to our reports, the White Serpent is the greatest threat in this region. If it survived the battle with Jake, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to eliminate it first?"
For several seconds, the envoy didn’t respond at all and continued walking. Then, his head tilted slightly forward as he finally spoke. "Let’s just say..."
His voice was almost inaudible beneath the soft sounds of the forest. "...it’s a matter of pride."
