Two decades ago, in a quiet, organized building, the hurried sound of someone’s footsteps echoed through the seemingly endless hallways.

Tap—tap—tap—tap!

A young child, no more than five years old, ran with tiny legs, his bare feet slamming against the cold marble floor as he desperately tried to reach his destination.

The child was dressed in a long white gown, much like the ones patients in hospitals used to wear in the old world. His yellow hair was short, yet wild, as though it were infused with a dormant strength of lightning.

His long brows were raised with excitement, while a proud grin stretched across his innocent face, revealing a missing tooth.

’I got it!’ Jake’s amber eyes sparkled brightly as he tightened his tiny grip around a glass tube.

Inside the tube was a nearly transparent fluid, carrying only the faintest hint of green. ’With this, I can finally heal Coco!’

The happiness reflected on the child’s face was pure enough to melt anyone’s heart. Without caring about anything else, Jake continued running through the hallways, moving his small legs as quickly as he could.

The building itself was massive; no matter how long he ran, the end of the hallway never seemed to arrive. There were countless doors on either side, each leading into different rooms and laboratories, while strange equipment could occasionally be seen through the transparent windows.

After some time, small beads of sweat began forming on Jake’s forehead, and his breathing gradually became ragged. But still, he didn’t stop; after all, his family was sick.

’The big people said this green water can heal boo-boos!’

His tiny face became determined.

’Then it can heal Coco too!’

Jake mustered all of his remaining strength and slammed his soles against the marble floor even harder. The glass tube in his hands was nothing more than one of the early prototypes of a healing potion.

Nearly two decades had passed since the apocalypse—by this point, humanity had finally begun getting back on its feet, with surviving scientists gradually advancing their knowledge through countless experiments involving Nox, monsters, plants, and the strange powers bestowed upon awakeners.

Under the governance of the Awakeners Association, new classes, ranks, systems, and countless other discoveries had emerged.

Even this seemingly endless building was one of the many facilities operated under the Association, but Jake didn’t care about any of that.

To him, the entire world had been reduced to one simple thing: saving Coco.

Unbeknownst to the young child, however, the sound of his footsteps had attracted unwanted attention. One of the doors beside the hallway suddenly slid open.

A skeletal figure slowly stepped outside; his eyes were lifeless, his cheeks sunken from malnutrition, and his pale face carried a strange expression as he stared at the fleeting figure of the young child.

Then another door opened, followed by another.

Soon, tens of people began emerging from the various rooms scattered throughout the facility.

Men and women, Young and old—all of them wore similar white gowns, staring at Jake with strange expressions.

None of them uttered a single word; maybe they weren’t even thinking anything at all. Yet, they instinctively began following the child.

The more they watched the child running through the hallway with the glass tube clutched tightly within his hands, the more their breathing began to rise.

Some stared at him with curiosity, while others revealed a sense of envy.

Jake, however, noticed none of them and simply continued on his way. After several abrupt turns, he finally reached a half-open room.

Beside the door was a small nameplate, with a single code etched onto its surface: 518.

Jake’s eyes immediately brightened as he called out a name. "Coco!"

He quickly pushed the door open and rushed inside.

The people following him immediately froze. For several seconds, none of them moved. Then, almost as if they had suddenly remembered something, they silently turned around and retreated into the hallways.

Inside the room were a small bed and a simple closet. It was cramped enough to feel almost claustrophobic, but for Jake, it was more than enough.

On the small bed lay a young puppy. Its fur was short and completely black, contrasting greatly against the overwhelmingly white theme of the room.

It was a playful creature that had spent almost its entire life alongside Jake. In this strange world, where the child had never known what a normal home looked like, Coco was the closest thing he had to family.

The puppy was weak, its eyes were closed, and its breathing was barely noticeable.

But there was another figure standing beside the bed. A tall man dressed in long white robes. His shoulder-length dark hair rested against his back, while his face remained hidden beneath a simple mask.

Two distinct teal bells hung from his ears, dangling like a pair of eerie earrings. The man held a clipboard in one hand, marking several squares across different lines with the other.

Jake immediately recognized him and chimed happily. "Sir Envoy!"

The man spared him a glance and blandly replied. "Hoh? You’re back?"

Then, His gaze shifted toward the glass tube in Jake’s hands. "Did you bring the potion?"

"Yes!" Jake raised the tube in his hands proudly. "I brought the green water! Will this make Coco better?"

Hearing his question, the envoy paused briefly. For a moment, his eyes remained fixed on the child.

Then, he nodded. "Feed it to him. It should make him better."

"Okay!" Jake beamed as he quickly pulled out the cork from the glass tube, which fortunately hadn’t been fitted tightly.

Climbing onto the small bed, he gently lifted the puppy’s head with one hand. "Coco, drink this."

He carefully poured the liquid into its mouth, and immediately, a faint green hue appeared around the puppy’s body.

The light was barely visible, yet it slowly spread across its black fur.

For a moment, even Jake widened his eyes in surprise. "It worked!"

Beside him, the envoy moved his hand and ticked one of the boxes on his clipboard. The green light continued glowing for several moments before slowly fading away.

Almost instantly, the puppy’s eyelids moved weakly as it opened them by a slit.

"Coco?"

Unlike its black fur, its irises were a bright cerulean. Upon seeing Jake, it weakly wagged its fluffy tail.

"Coco!" Seeing that his family had awoken from its long slumber, Jake nearly teared up.

He immediately wrapped both arms around the puppy and hugged it tightly. "It worked! You’re better!"

Until only moments ago, Coco couldn’t even open its eyes. But now it could move; it could see him; it could even make a faint growling sound.

Just from feeling its warmth and hearing its sound, his heart felt incredibly warm. Behind him, the envoy silently ticked another box.

However, near midway, his hand abruptly paused.

The puppy’s body suddenly began shivering violently.

"Coco?"

The puppy coughed several times; each time the intensity got worse, and so did its voice.

Before Jake could understand what was happening, he suddenly felt a strange warmth spreading across his back.

His amber eyes slowly widened, his smile fading as if it were never meant to be on his face in the first place.

Coco had stopped moving, unlike before; the puppy wasn’t even shivering anymore.

It felt... strangely cold.

Jake slowly loosened his arms and looked down; his innocent expression gradually disappeared.

Blood was gushing from the puppy’s eyes, ears, nostrils, and mouth.

Deep crimson liquid splattered across Jake’s white gown, staining it instantly as the child stared blankly.

His tiny hands were trembling with shock while he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

His vision gradually became blurry as tears began filling the corners of his eyes. Still holding onto Coco, Jake slowly turned toward the envoy.

The man stared at the puppy for a few moments before snorting in derision. "Another failure?"

Jake’s lips trembled as a bleak voice escaped his lungs. "Sir?"

"Is Coco sleeping?"

His voice was filled with a mix of shock and confusion. "Why’s he bleeding?"

For a child that young, the concept of death wasn’t something he had come close to. Even if he did, it would be far from dying in such a manner.

Seeing the blood of his most precious staining his clothes and smearing his skin, Jake felt his breath rise with unease.

Unconsciously, he tightened his grip around the puppy. "Didn’t the green water heal him?"

The envoy calmly looked down at his clipboard before drawing a cross through the final checkbox.

"Ah, well." His voice remained completely indifferent.

"The puppy died."

The words didn’t immediately make sense.

Died?

What did that mean?

He barely even understood the meaning of death.

Having spent most of his life in this tiny room, Jake’s knowledge was limited. By his logic, people became sick. People got hurt. In the end, people were healed.

That was how the world worked.

And the green water was supposed to heal Coco.

So why...

"B-but..." His voice trembled as he continued. "You said the water would save him." Without even knowing, the child raised his voice with every word spoken.

It wasn’t the cheerful voice he had used moments ago. When heard carefully, one could hear a faint pressure lingering in it.

The envoy stared at his anxious expression for several seconds. At last, without even the slightest hint of remorse, he spoke. "Ah, I’m sorry, Jake."

"But I lied."

For the next several breaths, silence filled the room as those very words seemed to echo throughout the entire dead-silent faculty.

Hearing his words, even Jake’s mind seemed to have stopped functioning.

*Crack.*

Suddenly, a faint sound echoed from inside the room, changing the envoy’s calm expression.

The hair on his body slowly began rising upward in the air, forcefully pushing against his clothes.

Jake’s yellow hair started to flutter despite there being no wind.

Faint blue stripes gradually began appearing vertically across his hair, while tiny sparks of yellow lightning leaked from the corners of his eyes.

The sparks spread across his cheeks and his arms, eventually covering his entire body.

A static sound buzzed in the air, while the envoy narrowed his eyes beneath his mask.

"What..." Muttering under his breath, Jake lowered his head, clenching his small fists tightly.

Tears continued to flow down his cheeks, except this time, they weren’t tears of sadness alone.

They were fueled by a waking rage. "Y-you..."

The lightning around his body became denser in an instant, condensing physically in the air.

"You liar—!" Jake screamed at the top of his lungs as the sound reverberated throughout the entire facility like an ear-deafening thunderclap.

The lights flickered violently while the metallic equipment throughout the surrounding rooms began vibrating.

Static spread through the hallways, causing several of the people who had previously followed Jake to instinctively stop in their tracks.

Jake slowly dropped Coco onto the bed as his figure instantly disappeared.

At the same time, the envoy’s pupils contracted rapidly. In the next instant, Jake appeared directly before him. Time itself seemed to have slowed down for that brief moment.

The child’s right hand was clenched tightly into a fist behind him, while countless streaks of lightning flowed down his cheeks from his eyes like tears.

A blinding yellow light coated his tiny fist. His eyes were no longer innocent but filled with an unending rage.

"Fuck you!" His fist slammed directly into the envoy’s chest.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

Instantly, a deafening explosion erupted, and the entire room was swallowed by blinding light. All while a violent wave of lightning tore through the surrounding facility.
